I don’t get it, serious question, do we have the worst “big man “ coach in the nation?

Myles leaving is a crushing blow
I feel like I’m in the twilight zone watching this game. Cliff looks like he regressed and Agee looks like he’s never played the game in his life. How does a big guy continually take a dribble and fade away from the basket before going up instead of going straight up or toward the hoop. That’s the first thing you learn when you realize you’re a big man!

I was skeptical on Cliffs development preseason

He may not peak til next season

Cliff is very overrated! just because he is athletic and can run and jump, people love him. He’s still very raw. No doubting his potential. But in four games has he made a shot other than a dunk or lay in? Everyone loves his highlight dunks. That’s great. But how about rebounding? In traffic! Against inferior competition he has yet to make a post move. He doesn’t rim protect or block shots. And then foul trouble.

Agee and Reiber would have a hard time getting minutes on a low level d1 team. Hard to believe we couldn’t do better after 3 winning seasons, improved facilities, and playing Time available.

Big men take longer to develop & play consistently. It's year 2. Have some patience before you expect him to play to his potential

Please compare Agee and Reiber to Nunge, end of story.
Both soft…. Totally opposite of the Pitino cry from Minnesota…”Rutgers beats you up inside”

And nowReiber… Go toward the basket and go up strong for crying out loud!
They had a very good shot blocker in there and those guys are not Big men. Jaden Jones looks bigger than Reiber. Agee had 2 in a row blocked out of nowhere before he made that move away and then back which I agree is not the right thing to do but he did draw the foul.

Cliff on the other hand dunked with authority every time he touches it down there. Like Myles last year, he picked up some bad fouls but also had some bad calls against him. RHJ had 2 really bad calls against him.

Agee plays like he recognizes he is overmatched down low, that he expects his shot to get blocked. And it probably would if he put it right up because he has no hops and is only 6’7”. So he tries some moves to create space but that doesn’t work so he can’t score. I can tell you that just from being at the one open practice and watching him work on his moves his limitations were very obvious. Harper is probably our best back up center.

The way people talked themselves into Agee this offseason was ridiculous.

I'm officially concerned about what the quality B1G big men will do to us this year without Myles stopping them. Last night was not good. We hit a good percentage from 3 yet still lost to a lower level Big East team. Hopefully things will start to click.

Myles leaving is a crushing blow

Can we retire the Myles Johnson stuff.....he was not good enough to play as a true freshman because he was injured and getting back into shape....he was here for 4 years.....we cannot expect kids to play 5 seasons of college basketball, it's not realistic.....he graduated and is on UCLA.....it is time to move on from Myles, Jacob and Mathis.....they're not coming back, continuing to think kids dont move on after 4 years at a school is getting out of hand.

You're both right. It would be more accurate to say "Not adequately replacing Myles Johnson is a crushing blow."

Pike talked Agee, not us

I also don't understand why fans take what coaches say literally and take it to heart......Pike said Peter Kiss had a 40 inch vertical, which in theory is factual, but Kiss is or was not a complete B1G guard.

Pike is going to say things and it should not be taken as gospel......I always look at what a coach actually does, not what he says.....Coach is better off being evaluated on what he does or puts on the court, not what he says on media day.

If Schiano says Vedral is a tough QB and our leader on offense, it says he is a tough kid and leads the offense......he is not saying the player is a great QB, great passer or playmaker. Sometimes what a coach doesn't say is more revealing than what he does say.

Do I think the 5 position is the strongest that it has ever been at RU.....?? No, but I do think I could argue it is, because Cliff is clearly the most complete big man RU has had in probably 3 decades or more.....he is elite and fast, explosive and improving rapidly. Any 5 position with Cliff and a golf bag and tees, can be considered the best 5 group he has had....Cliff has next level NBA capability in 2 years....we cannot actually say that about anyone else who has played at RU....

Our coaching staff is four point guards.
This always concerned me. When Pike was looking for a new coach to replace Van Macon, I was hopeful he would bring in a big. When he announced (after a search) that he was hiring Hayn I was worried that we already had three guards on the staff and not enough to work with, or perhaps recruit, bigs moving forward.

I also can’t fathom the lack of offensive identity (schemes, sets, court awareness, you name it) with four guards coaching the team.

Cliff replaced Myles Johnson and is playing good complete basketball.....the drop-off from Myles to Cliff was noticeable last year because Cliff was a frosh, got injured and really didn't get back into a flow......he is significantly better than Myles Johnson right now.....Myles Johnson played a different brand of basketball but he has graduated.....you don't replace a 4th or 5th year player with another immediate starting caliber player off the bench......which program has that, unless you're talking an elite blue blood program.....??

Myles in year 2 (RS FR) was a solid big man. Reiber year 2 is not. Agee is not. This is the missing piece (as far as the 5 is concerned).

I wasn't expecting anyone great. Just solid.

Cliff will be an NBA draft choice. The kid can shoot it from three but has the clamps on him. Go to an open practice. He is 5-6 years removed from coming to USA and RC. The RC staff and Rutgers Staff have done an amazing job getting him to where he is physically and game wise. Still a long ways to go. Remember Bailey, no one thought he could shoot until Tom
turned him loose during the end of his Sophmore year. Give Wiz some breaks. You are going to love what you see. He is a hoops neophyte that will one day make you a fan.

Cliff is great at attacking the rim. I am not worried about him on offense.it is on the defensive side where he has a lot of room to grow. He is not a rim protector or strong defensive rebounder yet. We can hope...

Agee needs to ATTACK THE RIM when he gets a rebound at the tin. Go up and throw it down, big guy! You may get blocked at times doing that, but you will also draw more fouls.

Reiber has shown glimpses here and there but lacks the muscle and weight to be a traditional big man. He needs to develop other ways to help out.

Can't blame Agee on our big man coach. That is a recruiting swing and miss. The man is a 5th year senior and he makes mistakes high school players don't. Cliff would have easily finished all four of Agee's chances last night. More than once, Agee received a great pass and instead of going straight up for the dunk, he pulled the ball down to the ground and let the defense collapse on him. Excruciating to watch!

@Yeah Baby told us everything would be ok and we're better this year.
No I told you that posting about the Yankees in the Mets 30 for 30 thread was poor form and since that time you have stalked me like a girl who was left at the prom by her date.

Carry on little sheep.

Myles is one of the best defensive centers, shot blocker, rim protecter in the country.
Ask any opposing coach what he was with us.

One area not mentioned that is a concern and an opportunity to improve is the lack of a fast break. Specifically we had 2 great steals, but we were beaten down court and came away with zero points out of 4 possible. Generally, if relook at the replay, Cliff beat the defense down court, but we casually brought the ball up court and missed opportunities to score before defense was set.
