Big surprise, Arch Manning leads the way

I piled on some early in the year when he wasn't living up to the hype (possibly to compensate for our own QB flopping this year). But Manning has character, I'll give him that. First, he sat on the bench and waited for his turn, even though most any P4 school would have jumped on him with massive pay day to transfer. In that sense alone, he's a rarity.

Now, it's reported today that he's taking a CUT in his revenue share to help Texas fill out other parts of their roster. Has ANY player taken a voluntary NIL cut?

Upbringing makes all the difference in the world.

He probably had his own butler growing up.

Who cares? He's got more character than most any other player I can think of. Most try to extort as much money as possible for their respective programs.

It goes to show you can grow up in a hard-knock environment and be more entitled than someone who grew up in a well-to-do environment. Nurture trumps nature.

You asked about who takes less money to help their team. The answer is rich people who don't need the money. I guess you can call it upbringing.

There are PLENTY of kids in college football who grew up well-to-do who are nevertheless milking the system.

I can give the guy credit. He doesn't need to give the money back, but he is.

He's rich, so its less of a gesture than coming from someone else, but hes still doing it.

He's helping his team get better so he can look better. That gesture? The self interest one?

I’m sure he was raised well but come on, what other players have a grandfather and two uncle who are football legends? Money is not a factor for him.

lol, it's irrelevant how much money his family has. He, by all rights, could have kept his money. He's giving some of it back so the team can fill other roster holes.

I mean, I get it. I lived in Tennessee during the Peyton Manning heyday for UT. I hated Manning as much as anyone, but I'm a grown up now. I can't just have disdain all for all Mannings just b/c their last name is Manning.

Objectively there's no way to look at this besides a high character move.

Sounds like inherent racism to me, lol. If you're white, you're inherently racist and there's nothing you can do about it.

If he keeps the money: self-interest.

If he gives money back: self-interest.

lol

One thing to think of, does anyone know what his family is like about their money?

I adk because of an interview I saw with Shaq. One of his kids said something about being rich, and Shaq said "youre not rich, I'm rich".

Meaning maybe Arch isn't going to have free access to daddy's money for a while.

I grew up fairly poor, but I don't get the massive grudge some folks obviously have (not you) against anyone with money.

The narrative seems to be "Arch Manning grew up in a wealthy family, so he's incapable of having good character."

I get it. It comes from seeing someone with money either get things, or get away with things "normal" people dont.

There is a point too. Its easy for Musk to donate a million dollars, and it looks cooler than me donating 10k. But my donation is a bigger burden.

Yeah, I understand the widow's mite and all that.

But Manning did something I've never heard of any other college player doing, and there are LOTS of privileged guys in college football.

I don't know. I just don't look at the gestures people make in light of how much money they have.

It's why I'm adamantly opposed to taxing the rich and redistributing the wealth.

Good reference!

And I agree. In the end, he is giving some money back to help his team. Sellers should do the same just as an apology for last season.

The following is just an aside to bring a little levity to this conversation.

This conversation about Arch reminds me of an episode of J.B. Smoove's dinner conversations. Smoove is a comedian who was part of Larry David's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" cast. Well, one evening he had Joe Montana, Tom Brady, Archie Manning, Eli Manning and Peyton Manning over for dinner. He was serving steak, corn, mash potatoes, gravy, rolls, etc. Smoove wanted a second-helping of mash potatoes. He then asks: "Will one of you legendary quarterbacks please pass me the mash potatoes. Eli picks up the bowl. J.B. yells, "No, no. no Eli put that bowl down. I asked for one of the legendary quarterbacks to pass me the mash potatoes."

How much is Sark giving back from his $11m per year salary to hire more talent? How much is any coach?

I would like to see more of that, from more coaches.

1 million a year from sark could probably buy a pretty good OL class. Or improve what they have.

I might be wrong here but we’re talking about the share of the $20.5 million divided among the players.Arch could easily give back all of this and make it up on the NIL side.Am I wrong in my thinking here?

There aren't many NFL quarterbacks doing that despite the fact that their legacies are on the line if they don't win games.

Sure he could make it up but that's still money he's not taking.

I hope all Tx players are greedy and out for themselves, leading to self destruction and the destruction of their team success

Because there's not a program out there that has ever tried to extort money (in a sense) from the players, right? IMO what goes around comes around

How much is he giving up and is it even enough to get 1 good player? These kids are asking for more money than professionals make.
