Doucet and Thompson are good room guys but if they are 2 of our 10 starters along with the guys we currently have at 133 who I don't think are anywhere close to being AA level right now, we are going to struggle against the top teams. We need to hit the portal for sure IMO. I also wasn't super impressed with what I saw out of Hughes, especially after all the hype
Doucet is currently a R12 guy with 7 of the top 8 leaving. Now, 2 guys that fall right in the top 5 return, so it's not like he's auto top 5. But, next year, he is easily top 10 falling into the 6-9 range. So, the statement that he is just a room guy is incorrect.

To @oklahomaglory point, we need to see Rin some more before we just cast him aside. IMO, what he showed at Iowa is very promising. He did forget to fill up with gas, but I would bet that isn't an issue with more matches. He is lightning fast, offensively aggressive and mentally tough. I am cool with another subpar season at the weight just to see what the kid can do!

maybe a year of not seeing him wrestle has made you forget he had absolutely ZERO offense. I’m sure he got better this year redshirting but going back to him after having Wyatt is exactly that…..going backwards.

I have not forgot. I have also seen other Wrestlers rely on stellar D to win and win at a big clip. It is the inverse of a thrower (but more calculated) in the phrase, "live by the sword, die by the sword."

I also hate to break it to you. Unless we can get a hardship for 3 Wrestlers, no matter who takes the mat at 285, it is going backwards.

DT isn't going to prematurely hit the portal. Sakamoto, Vega, McComas are all talents.

Look at my beloved Hawks. Mass portaling is not the way to go. It's a band-aid.

And Hughes was at the wrong weight. I think you see more of what he was supposed to be up at 141.

I think you are missing something on Rin. He was in the room for about one month when he wrestled a defending national champ and kept it reasonably close. He is very fast and was able to escape a couple of times. Will he be a national champion next year (probably not), but he should AA and have a good season. David Taylor is very popular with college wrestlers and if they are unhappy with where they are I am sure many will talk to him. We do have a war chest for some NIL wrestlers.

NCAA passing out "hardships" like candy. They'll all be fine.

I think we could see DT go to the portal more than most think, at least this next season. After that, not so much.

Not to be a hater but Doucet isn’t a guaranteed anything. If he gets taken down once he’s toast. If he doesn’t escape once he’s toast. If he gives up a stalling point he’s toast. In 3+ years he’s yet to show that he can muster up any kind reliable offense in matches. KD had a chance vs Air Force and took how many shots, zero? Plus staff indicates that they care about the entertainment aspect and to me that means wrestling a guy that may lose more but is fun to watch compete, vs a guy that may win more but stalls until ride outs. Time will tell though

I am not missing anything? I am super excited about Rin! He looked like a Bobby Possumcods squirrel out there until his gas tank got a little light.

Also, he's been in the room for awhile, not just a month...not that it matters. The kid is good.

Love Gilman (never thought I’d say that) but I could definitely see him being one of those coaches that throws the challenge brick every ten seconds.
I do too! I love the FIRE!

He's actually very sharp and wouldn't throw a brick unless it was pretty obvious or very vital to the match and need a prayer.

Like on Tagen in the finals (which I believe is this video) they wanted a fleeing the mat, not a takedown review. They reviewed for a TD and I think that is what he was upset about?

I asked because the PSU board was questioning the relationship between the two from this video. To me, it looked exactly as you described but others saw a bad vibe between the two. As I said there, I love feisty subordinates. They are all in on the outcome and those guys/gals are hard to find. I call it "acting like an owner".

Nope, they’re good!

The PSU board misses the fact that this is the most stressful part of the year for a coach.

DT brought him here for that Fire. It’s a wonderful dynamic!

LOL people talk about being an AA so matter of factly, Rin showed nothing that says he will be an AA next year, that doesn't mean he can't be but he certainly isn't a lock. Everyone on here also talked about Christian Carroll competing for a national championship as a freshman and he was 5-5 when he quit Iowa State. Everyone talked about Cael Hughes and Thompson and every other high-level recruit we get coming in an making AA right away and it very rarely happens, or college wrestling would be littered with 4X All-Americans and that just isn't even close to being the case
