So is defense...
Just out of curiosity, what defense should BC's NU have employed ? Exclusively man to man -when every team was more athletic ? He relied on an unorthodox zone to better utilize his available talent. Unfortunately, it is more difficult to defensively rebound in a zone , when you cannot box out effectively

Blame poor recruiting on BC, NU Admissions, horrible facilities or whatever but he maximized NU's chances of winning with what he had

Anything but that 1-3-1 with a small player down low. Seriously?

And rebounding.

NU had to play a zone defense because of athletic deficiencies. It is difficult to rebound out of a zone under any circumstance but with a lack of athleticism NU suffered greatly

BC could not emphasize offensive rebounding because NU could not defend fast breaks if they committed to the "O" boards. You do know that UVA also drops back immediately to prevent teams running out on them. NU was forced to use this defensive strategy out of necessity

BC was a brilliant coach forced to employ unorthodox strategies to counter teams with greater talent and depth. The lack of talent may fall on BC but institutional indifference and policies contributed also

There was a game where the opposing team finished with more offensive rebounds then we finished with total rebounds. Our inability to rebound defensively was maddening...

Was that the Penn State game? That seems to stick our in my mind. Think they shot like 29% and still won...

And the fact that Carmody absolutely sucked as a recruiter.

BC may have been a "terrible" recruiter but even more importantly, he squandered presenting our program's beautiful facilities to recruits since NU's luxurious digs were a big selling point. He also was able to get potential recruits through admissions with ease, unlike today where our admission standards are considered an obstacle

I agree that NU's talent deficit was the prime reason that NU was not more successful during the BC years

When I was finally able to see more NU games on TV, I could easily see why NU continually struggled in the B1G. You cannot overcome greater talent consistently with "schemes"-once in a while but not consistently

Anyone who doesn't even bother to be in town when a future 1st round pick whose parents are alums just shouldn't be coaching in the college ranks period.

I appreciate Coach Carmody for what he did at Northwestern, the integrity that his program showed, and the fact that we did get better as a program.

I am glad he conducted himself with class while he was here. No real reason to rehash bitter feelings about him in this thread.

I think you could say that every NU BB coach showed integrity. Well ok maybe not KO but he was fun to watch on the sidelines.

The 4 straight NIT’s era was some of my favorite years of NU basketball. I remember it fondly. Everything from beating national runner-up MSU at the Izzone to taking #1-ranked OSU to OT to a last second rim-out from losing to Wheaton to getting shelled by DeChellis to the random game at Texas-Pan American. It was wild and fun. Carmody milked everything he could out of a program with an antiquated arena and no history. Set the table for Collins to make history.
