Blackbeard! One thing I love is that many of the main characters are based on real historical pirates, politicians and privateers.
Over winter break, the family and I went on a cruise. One of the ports was Nassau. As we were walking around the shopping area close to the port, I saw a "Pirate Museum". The wife had no interest, but the kids went with me to check it out. I think it cost $16 per person to get in. As we walked through, and read historical accounts of many of the famous pirates in the region, I continuously said to myself things like, "oh, he is in Black Sails" or "oh, that happened in Black Sails". I had never heard of Charles Vane before watching the show, but he was a real person who had a huge impact among the pirates in that region. Most of the other main characters are taken straight from the history books.
What HBO did with Boardwalk Empire and Starz has done with Black Sails is really very smart. The main character (Nucky Thompson and Captain Flint) is mostly fictitious. But, the majority of the other main characters were real people with very interesting lives. Those lives provide the outline of the story for the show. They then use the fictitious character to spice the story up and take it where they want to go. But, they don't have to create the entire storyline because it already exists.
