Not trying to be a prick or anything else...a sincere question: I Grew up with an alcoholic parent and I believe I know what being drunk did for him, but what do people see as the benefit of being drunk or stoned vs being sober?

In general it's a social act initially. Being a suppressant it relaxes people or disarms them of a lot of their personal self esteem issues. It may be obvious but that's the draw to it from an early age. I have a brother that is an alcoholic who went from a normal guy with challenges with women, but when drinking literally could take just about any woman he wanted home. It was seriously crazy to see the change in him. To anyone that ever met him he was the epitome of confidence, but the problem was he really was very vulnerable when he wasn't drinking. It wasn't much of an issue for most of his 20's but as he got a little older and other factors played into it, he really ramped up on drinking to compensate. We also have native american bloodlines which are prone to dependency on alcohol, so that may have played a factor, but he became dependent in his 30's and it's been a battle ever since. It's been tough seeing him battle it because he is literally one of the best people I have ever known, but only when he's sober. When he falls off the wagon it's brutal. Terrible disease.

Like with your brother, That's what I see when working with people who are chronically drunk or need to get stoned. They have some kind of issue they can't deal with sober.
That's my major concern with gateway drugs. When kids use them to feel better, they do so at the expense of finding healthy ways to cope with or solve problems.

Drunk and stoned are two totally different feelings. I don't drink often but smoke regularly. The benefit is that I like the way it makes me feel. I don't NEED to get high, I just like to.
Reasonable answer. Question: what is better about the feeling you get when smoking than without smoking?

Boredom, individuals sober life disappointing, friends using, fun, eventual addiction. There’s all sorts of reasons people use or drink.

It's relaxing.

Edit:
Also, I think addiction has a lot to do with that particular person. Some people have addictive personalities and some don't. I've done pretty much every drug except heroin(I hate needles) in my younger years. Even at the height of my drug use 20 years ago, if I didn't want to do it, I wouldn't do it. There were lots of times I wanted to though.

The only drug I've ever been truly addicted to was nicotine. That **** is hard to kick.

Yep, that's a tough one. Had a person in a leadership position in healthcare tell me tobacco was much worse than alcohol. Don't think I agree. Though, I've been around more alcoholics who quit cold turkey than smokers who were able to do the same.

My dad was an alcoholic. I never saw him drink anything other than light beer. But he would drink 7-8 every day. He said he liked the taste. Looking back, I don't remember seeing him falling down drunk, just more laid back (maybe a slight buzz).

He had a lot of stress and I think that was his outlet. He ran his own car repair business, so no days off. Kids, wife, property upkeep (he had a few rental properties), customers, bills, on and on. He was stuck in a grind.

For me, I'm a social drinker. I just feel more relaxed after some good drinks.

I have not drank in close to 30 years and when I did it wasn't just a drink or 2. It was in my teen/early 20 years and I did it to get plastered. The reason I guess I quit was I didn't find it enjoyable anymore to be puking my guts out and have a hangover the next day. I enjoy my life now without it so no need to change.

Have enjoyed alcohol without getting drunk... But passed the enjoyment place often enough and ended up drunk... Which I didn't enjoy, though it took me a day to know that.
I have never been a little stoned... I was just as stupid after after a couple hits as I was after a bowl... Just didn't stay stupid as long maybe... Don't remember.... I was most likely drinking also.

I no longer drink, but I’d be lying if I said there weren’t times I miss the bite of a good bourbon.

Ever have sex after eating an edible? It's awesome.
Yep, sure is. I drink IPA's a couple nights a week because I like the taste, I eat 1/2 a gummy bear because it kills all anxiety and tension out of my body and I sleep like a million $'s. This keeps me reasonable, rational, and patient with everyone I encounter at work, at church, and in my family. They also make loud music sound 325.6% better when I'm driving in my car.

I think I am going to try the gummy route. If it can get rid of my anxiety and/or panic attacks, I am all for it.

For me, it’s not about the alcohol, it’s just that I can’t have a good dinner without an alcoholic pairing. For example:

Pizza goes great with beer
Burgers and steaks go well with red wine
Fish go well with white wine

And frankly, if I’m doing a pairing, I’ll have an aperitif before dinner, and of course a digestif after dinner (helps the food settle). And at 5 o’clock I have a cocktail too so I’m more relaxed at dinner. And I obviously have a nightcap before bed because I’m not a savage. So see, it’s more of a food thing for me.

I actually have always wondered that too. First of all I hate throwing up, so anything that leads to that I’m going to avoid. Secondly I don’t like the idea of losing control, of making a stupid decision.

From his standpoint, he's right. The fact that both tobacco and alcohol are legal shows the hypocrisy of the war on drugs.
Annual US deaths attributed to:
Drug overdoses - 72,000 (opiates are 48,000 and marijuana is 0)
Alcohol - 88,000
Tobacco - 480,000
Edit: numbers are from the CDC

Also dont overdo it. They usually come in 10 or 5 micrograms. 5 is plenty for me. 2.5 is fine for my wife. The ones we have are 10. I have 1/2 of one and she has 1/4 whenever either of us wants one. Last Sunday I took 1/2 of one before each football game. Ate some chili, drank a lot of water and really enjoyed the games and texting with my buddies. Slept great, no hangover, felt great Monday for a productive day at work.

You should also note there is a difference between indica and sativa. Indica is super chill, great for a movie night at home, watching the game, chilling in the backyard with friends, etc. Sativa is more energizing. It kind of gives you a bit of a rush. When we moved 3 or 4 months ago I took the Sativa when packing. Kept me anxiety free and patient, but I was super in the zone packing and got a lot done and everything was very organized and easy to unpack. My wife took an indica that same day. When hers kicked in we had sex and then she fell asleep and I worked with the kids diligently packing for the next 3 hours by myself LOL! Just a bit of warning about the differences.

Strictly from the position of how the impact of each on the user. What is not measured by the numbers is the impact on families, especially children; crime related to use or intoxication; cost to society; etc...

Not everyone who uses a substance is negatively affecting their families.

Users who have decreased to the point of dysfunction have been happening for thousands of years. Pretty sure there is one consistent measure. Dysfunctional users don't care about impacts.

Not every "user" is the same. Pretty bold over generalization you stated.

Why do some people have blonde hair while others brown? People have different reasons for what they do. People also have different reactions to alcohol. That's obvious when people speak about how alcohol makes them a lover, or a fighter. Alcohol lessons inhibitions making a person more at ease in social situations, too much alcohol can make that same person a problem. It's been around for several thousands of years and that says a lot.
