I've seen FU play several times this year, and came away impressed each game. Even if they lose, what a performance. I support Lamont, and he should get his chance. But it's baffling to me Richey wasn't qualified and Lamont was. I guess maybe his time as an assistant at WISC set him apart?? Who knows. One thing is certain, FU just plays better basketball than we do.

As I said in my prior comment just before this one, more picked us to finish worse than 12th than did not. A lot more picked us to finish worse than 12th than did not. And I listed multiple sources.
I do find it very interesting that some of the people on here who say "Hey, I don't know what you're upset about. We were as bad we were expected to be. Get over it!" are the same people saying "Hey, we exceeded expectations!"

It can't be both.

I don't think anyone is saying we did not suck. All some of us are saying is that we did better than most prognosticators said we would. which is true. And in light of the fact that we lost 70% of the previous team's players and had to replace them PRIMARILY with projects because of getting here so late, well that's VERY intriguing. Was it because of good coaching that we did better than most expected? Was it just luck? Or were we underrated coming into the season?

As I have often said, Paris was not among my top choices for the job. And I don't put my head in the sand if I feel sure that a coach can't get the job done. All someone has to do is read my posts on Marcus Satterfield to realize that. Trust me, if I conclude that Paris cannot get the job done, I will join you in wanting to run him out of town. My patience is thin, as I have a lot more years behind me than I do in front of me (something that I suspect you cannot say, at least to my extent).

This was always going to be a year where you had to look for positives, they’re not just jumping off the sheet. The team got better throughout the year. January was very bad, outside of the UK win. 5 of the 8 games we played in Feb were against tourney teams. We were in all of those except UT. Took bama to OT and should have won. Almost beat Ark who is now in the sweet 16. We were better than most expected, in the best bball conference in the country.

That would be Mike McGee as was Horn's replacement.
That is completely false. Hyman extended Odoms contract then fired him the next year and paid a buyout he increased after a losing season. He then hired Horn. Increased his buyout and extended his contract after year one. He then gave him an extra year the disastrous 2-14 season. We then paid his buyout that Hyman increased. Hyman then hired Martin. Eric Hyman nearly single handidly gave us terrible basketball for 15 years and cost us million in buyouts.

Yep! What's the damned difference in finishing 12, 13 or 14? They are all places no team aspires to be. None will get us to the dance.....SMH

To some, it's apparently very significant that we finished 12th, 2 games out of dead last.

Bickering over last place. I've seen it all.

I agree. It's a silly argument to have, but it's one that must be made when the narrative is that we overachieved on the season by finishing 12th out of 14 teams. But, this is where we are. Only Gamecock fans would have to engage in such an argument.

I agree with that. We certainly sucked this year. I'm just glad we were not the worst in the SEC, as most expected. That would be a hell of a scarlet letter to wear until next season starts.

I stand corrected….you are correct it was Hyman.

I understand you profess unwavering faith in the SEC media preseason projections, which pegged us at 14th. As you have previously stated, these are the most informed voters when it comes to the SEC, so these rankings are the most accurate and reliable. So let's see how they did:

UK was predicted 1st, they finished 3rd.

Arkansas was predicted 2nd, they finished 9th.

UT was predicted 3rd, the finished 5th.

Auburn was predicted 4th, the finished 7th.

Bama was predicted 5th, they finished 1st.

A&M was predicted 6th, they finished 2nd.

Florida was predicted 7th, they finished 8th.

LSU was predicted 8th, they finished 14th.

Ole Miss was predicted 9th, they finished 13th.

MSU was predicted 10th, they finished 10th.

Mizzou was predicted 11th, they finished 4th.

Vandy was predicted 12th, they finished 6th.

UGA was predicted 13th, they finished 11th.

We were predicted 14th, we finished 12th.

In summary, the final rankings bore no resemblance in any way to the preseason projections by the SEC "experts". They got 1/14 picks right (MSU at 10th). They were 93% wrong in their predictions, many of which were wildly off. The preseason #2 finished 9th. The 6th and 7th preseason picks finished 1 and 2. The preseason 8th pick finished dead last. The preseason #11 finished 4th. Overall, they were off by an average of 3.6 spots.

Are you sure you still want to hang your hat on these expert predictions?

I have said repeatedly we sucked this year in Paris' first year. That's accurate as we finished 12th in the SEC. We sucked just like Lou Holtz' first SC team.....just like in Dawn Staley's first year. All that is accurate too. I also stated that we were picked to finish 14th, dead last in the SEC, in pre-season basketball predictions by the 247 sports site, the SEC Media, Fansided.com and Sports Illustrated. 2 of 4 ESPN writers picked us to finish 13th as did CBS.. We ended up finishing 12th in the SEC, doing better than they all predicted. All that is accurate too.

Well, you completely ignored all the content of the post to which you replied. Preseason predictions are garbage and notoriously unreliable. Even the SEC experts can't get remotely close. You can't reference where they predicted us to finish us without giving context. The context is: where they predicted everyone else to finish. When you look at the predictions for the whole conference, it's obvious that the predictions are quite inaccurate. Wildly so in some cases. You just can't put much stock (pun intended), if any at all, into what the preseason predictions say.

What I stated was accurate. You did not find one inaccuracy in what I posted. We sucked, as expected in Paris's first season here. The same holds true in Lou Holtz' winless first season here and in Dawn Staley's first season, where she did worse than Paris' first season. And Paris's team in his first season here finished better than MULTIPLE pre-season prognosticators predicted we would. Again, you found nothing inaccurate in my statement.

It is only accurate if you include the qualifier "inaccurate and unreliable" for the pre-season prognosticators.

A partial truth is not accurate.

Would agree to the following statement: South Carolina finished higher than projected by many of the unreliable and inaccurate preseason predictions, which also failed to accurately predict the rankings of virtually the entire conference.

I stand by what I said: USC basketball in Paris' first season sucked, as did Lou Holtz' winless first season here and Dawn Staley's first season here (she did worse than Paris). And Paris' first SC team finished HIGHER than MULTIPLE pre-season prognosticators predicted. All that is factual and accurate.

They sure did not think much of us to predict mostly dead last for us.

I'll try again since you didn't attempt to answer the first time: Are preseason predictions accurate and reliable?

You have based your entire argument on the reliability of preseason predictions, so I would think this would be an easy answer for you.

I go by multiple prognosticators, not just one. If multiple say we will finish 13th or 14th, that is good enough for me.

Ok, you won't swing on the softball, but I'll slow it down for you: Like virtually every other team in the SEC, South Carolina did not finish where they were projected by most preseason predictions.

You would agree with that, right?

I don't care about how the other teams finished. I only care about USC, which finished higher than we were predicted to finish.

By the way, I will not return insults. I thought you were better than that. Am I wrong aboutyou?

If you care where we finish, you inherently care where other teams finish. Finishing 12th is relative to where other teams finish.

I care where WE were predicted to finish. There has to be some measuring stick for performance. If there's a better measuring stick to judge performance, I would TRULY like to know what it is..... seriously.

And thank you for refraining from being insulting, because you are better than that.

And I guess it's by that rationale that we ended up with Paris.
I'm not intentionally trying to be disagreeable with you. As I said elsewhere, we are stuck with the guy. Tanner has given his previous hires (Holbrook and Chump) 5 seasons each. And Tanner just got an extension. So we are REALLY stuck. I am just trying to look at the positive.....the bright side....since we are stuck for the foreseeable future. Trust me when I say it's healthier to do that.

It's really not that hard. It's a fact that we did better than most thought we would...however flawed that is. It's a fact that we won a couple of games we had no business winning. It's a fact that we played much better in Feb and were much more competitive against the top half of the league than we were in Jan. This all started with me saying there were some positives we can hopefully build on. Apparently that's argumentative.

Exactly. Nobody is saying he's good...nobody is saying we're good. But there's no use in bashing the guy every day. Might as well find some little reasons to believe better days are ahead...and I believe we have some.
