I always think that too but now I am starting to wonder if some of these head coaches, especially the ones that started young and have made a fortune, have started thinking "I don't need this anymore, I don't need to harassment from fans and the complaining and the recruiting trips. I am rich and can retire now and do some pregame shows or some color commentary"
You would think the timing is weird for that. Unless it was somewhat a knee jerk reaction to something or an administrator really pissed him off. Retiring with 80 days left until kickoff seems unlikely.
wow...I only wish we could've finished 2nd as many times as he did the last 20 years.
Why not retire. He'll laugh as somebody new comes in and does worse (feel or sound familiar?). Good to him if he's ready to move on

I think there might be some of that to it. Plus his wife makes really good money!
Very true...but I think they gave him some sweet good-ole-boy job...where he will basically be paid to play golf, take pictures and tell stories. So I would not think there is something bad going on...or at the very least not something that can be proven!

Very strange timing. College coaches don't retire in June unless they are forced to for some reason.
Who knows but look at this - coincidentally put on the Tribune website about the same time this news broke.

Either he is going to another team after this season and didnt want the young assistant to go somewhere else and getaway out of loyalty to OU, or this is nothing and he just doesnt want to coach anymore, like Bill Cowher.
Or Oklahoma made him an offer he couldnt refuse because of said assistant.

Some OU fans have wanted to move on from Stoopsy for a while now, and now they'll get their wish. Me thinks their going to miss him more than they thought.
I'll stir the rumor mill so bear with me here. What if he retires, bought the home in Chicago, and begins to help position OU for entrance into the Big Ten? That would be fun to see, but not likely what is happening here.
My cousin is in tulsa.. ou alumn..he says that he feels like the board of regents were forcing him to let his brother go and that might have been a factor... that's his feeling.
Yep...I think he was tired of fighting for Mike. Those Youngstown guys are a different breed...loyalty to their own goes above and beyond sometimes.
I've sensed that fans here want a change. thought he was forced out as soon as I heard it. one of the big mouths on the radio said he just moved all his junk into the new football offices. this wasn't totally voluntary. probably a culmination of things. maybe his boys want to go to play at tx...
