telling you, he could be the clear favorite if K sticks around for another 5 years. I know everybody says Capel and I always said Stevens but it looks like Stevens is going to make it in Boston. If it comes down to someone in the family watch out for Hurley. When your Dad was hall of Famer Hurley Senior and you played under K and you have success at Bufalo and now maybe ASU, Capel better look out. Jmo

I use to say no way but the more I think about and pay attention to him I see him as a very viable option

Really, who do you choose. Capel, who might be the best recruiter? Wojo, who is supposed to be brilliant? Collins? If he can win at Northwestern, he can win anywhere. Hurley? If he can build a program at ASU...

Today? I choose Capel. Who do I think will be the best coach out of them all? Hurley. he has the best pedigree IMO.

I love Hurley. Wish he had came on board with Duke 10 years ago as an assistant. I feel sure he could have and if that had happened he would probably be the favorite to replace Coach K. Right now I think he's got his work cut out for him. If he's really successful in the next few years maybe so. We keep speculating on who the next Duke coach will be. All of them would be capable IMO. But there is a question in my mind that perhaps they may not want to or be ready to follow Coach K. I really don't know. Glad I'm not making the decision on who the next coach will be and who ever it is having to follow Coach K. Hopefully that man will not try to be Coach K but just be himself and we Duke fans understand that and remain just as strong and supporting Duke fans that we are now. OFC

Good post Sky. Here's a few quotes from Grant on Hurley and the ASU opportunity.

As a young player at Duke, Grant Hill identified Bobby Hurley as a leader.

“I think he’s the type of guy that people would want to follow,” the former Duke forward said. “I know as a player I did.”

Ray Anderson has seen the same quality. The Arizona State vice president for university athletics hired Hurley as the Sun Devils next men’s basketball coach Thursday.

Hill and Hurley played together at Duke from 1990 to 1993, Hurley running the point and calling the plays in coach Mike Krzyzewski’s offense.

Hill said Hurley was fearlessly competitive as a teammate, but added that his mind for basketball, molded by Krzyzewski and his father, legendary St. Anthony (New Jersey) High School coach Bob Hurley Sr., may be as strong an asset for the new Tempe hire.

“By the time he was 21, all of his basketball influences were Hall of Famers,” said Hill, now a basketball analyst for Turner Sports. “His dad, his high school coach, his college coach – so in some ways I was envious of that.”

Arizona State isn’t exactly known as a basketball power, but Hill called it a “wonderful opportunity” for Hurley, noting the upside of a lower-echelon Pac-12 school.

“Having lived out there and knowing how great it is in the Valley, I could never quite figure out why it never quite happened for that program,” said Hill, who played for the Phoenix Suns from 2007 to 2012. “Bobby’s a young guy, Bobby’s a guy whose name is still somewhat relevant. People know that name and they can connect it with the program at Duke.”

Hill recognizes similarities between Hurley’s situation and Krzyzewski’s when he arrived at Duke. The Blue Devils had to compete with nationally known North Carolina while ASU will now try to build to the level of Arizona, a perennial contender.

“Knowing Coach K’s history and going to Duke and some of the challenges he had and what he had to do, it’s not always an overnight, snap-your-fingers instant change,” Hill said. “But you come in and you try to establish a culture.”

That’s precisely what Hurley intends to do.

“We are here to set a new standard, to make regular trips to the NCAA Tournament and regularly compete for conference and national titles,” he said in a statement released by the school.

The 43-year-old Hurley was 42-20 in two years in Buffalo, his only experience as a head coach. Prior to Buffalo, he coached under his brother, Dan, at Wagner and Rhode Island. His father, Bob, has coached St. Anthony’s since 1972 and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.

In 2014-15, Hurley led the Bulls to their first NCAA Tournament berth after a 23-9 (12-6 MAC) regular season and a Mid-American Conference tournament title. Buffalo bowed out of March Madness in its first game, a 68-62 loss to West Virginia.

“With Bobby at the helm, we will provide the necessary resources to compete within our state, our conference and across the nation,” Anderson said in a statement. “We are intent on becoming an elite men’s basketball program.”

Hurley replaces Herb Sendek, who was 159-137 in Tempe.

Hurley may be best known for winning back-to-back NCAA championships as a point guard for Duke in 1991 and 1992. He was drafted seventh by the Sacramento Kings in 1993. He had a five-year NBA career, which was interrupted in his rookie year by life-threatening injuries suffered in a car accident.

For Hill, it all goes back to Duke when it comes to Hurley.

“Maybe I recognized it when I was 19 or maybe I’m looking back at it now and sort of recognize it,” Hill said, “but you just kind of knew that this guy was not only a great player, but one day he’ll be a great coach.”

No doubt Bobby Hurley has all the things it takes to be a great coach. No on can challenge his desire to win including Coach K. I would have no problem at all with him as our next coach but I can say that about others also. OFC

Hurley is definitely a candidate. I think today Capel would be the guy. I still think Scheyer is close to it. Just look at some of the recruiting jobs he's taken (Kennard and Tatum). Jon would be a contender, but his lack of head coaching experience would ultimately do him in, IMO.

I think Capel is in the driver's seat at the moment, but Hurley has been impressive in such a short time. K is probably going to coach another 4 or 5 years, barring health or family problems, and a lot of things can change during that time. That gives Hurley, Scheyer, Wojo, etc., time to make more of an impact. We've got some good options inside the Duke family.

Hurley if we could be blessed and lucky enough to keep Capel as top recruit man and assistant along with Scheyer and bring in Nolan Smith

I hope K is the Duke Coach even after he's so old that he needs help standing at court side and his hair has turned grey.

I think it's too early to know with Hurley -- but the start to his career has certainly been encouraging. While I haven't necessarily been impressed by how Buffalo and ASU have always executed under Hurley, his teams play really hard and with an edge -- much like him. IMO, if Hurley can keep inspiring that kind of effort and grows as an Xs and Os guy as he develops more experience (remember this is only year 5 or 6 of being a coach) -- he certainly should have a chance. Also, while I've always been resistant to the knee-jerk suggestion of Wojo back-in-the day and thinks its far too early to be anoint him either, I've actually been really impressed by how well his young Marquette team has been playing.

IMO, the biggest problem with Dawkins' teams in Stanford and to a lesser extent Capel's teams in OU are that their squads often lacked the fight and precision that has been the hallmark of how Duke plays. Both Hurley and Wojo have their teams playing in a way that at least resembles the traditional grit of the Duke program.

I love all our past players but I certainly hope that we do not limit our search to former Duke players. Jmo but we should be looking to bring the best candidate in.I still remember what happened after Bubas retired

We passed on Hubie Brown and Chuck Daly for Walters. That sixties coaching staff had three Hall of Famers on it.While walters was a disaster as as a HC he was a great recruiter.IMO this may be the best coaching staff ever
