My brother and his wife who live in PA were down in Sumter the last couple of weeks visiting her mom. While out to eat one evening, my brother sent me a picture of a man at a nearby table and said he thought it was Bobby Richardson. I confirmed it appeared to be so. My brother, who is a pastor and knows Bobby is a Christian, walked past his table and introduced himself and they chatted for just a minute. A bit later, Bobby stopped at their table and chatted with him for a few more minutes. After they ate, my brother was outside waiting on his wife and brother-in-law and Bobby, on his way out, came over and talked to him some more about church stuff, asked lots of questions about his church and told him about his 3 sons who were in various aspects of Christian ministry. I'm super jealous, of course, as I'm a huge Yankees fan and Gamecocks fan and Bobby intersects both (and a Christian, so Bobby hits the trifecta). As a kid my dad was friends with Bobby's cousin, Eddie Richardson, who was a pastor in Sumter, so I'd always hoped to get a chance to meet him. Anyway, my brother said he was incredibly nice and gracious.

When I was a Coastal Carolina Bobby was our baseball coach. Many afternoons, Bobby and his daughter would come to the gym and play basketball with several of us. Great guy.

The young man in my pic is my Great Grandfather, Wade Hampton Richardson. (That's his 1902 Sumter baseball pic. He was a pitcher.) That was Bobby's Uncle, his father Robert's brother. Bobby and my Grandaddy were 1st cousins and I grew up in Sumter knowing him and his family. Have been in his house a number of times and in his swimming pool a number of times! Ha! Absolutely first rate, amazing human being. He came up to me at my grandfather's funeral and shared very kind words that I remember well. I also brought Bobby down to a church I pastored a number of years ago. Old guys showed up from miles around with gloves and balls and cards for him to sign. It was great. They don't get much better than Bobby Richadson.
