A Bono fan who questions Freddie's on stage presence?!?!? Look U2 is one of the worlds great bands. They generally are the band that gets runner-up status on that day. But it looks really silly to question Freddie's "schtick." Billboard Mag ranked FM as the #2 all time. Bono was a respectable 19th.

I believe you can google it but you'll find FM at the top or near the top of every single list of leading front men..not just singers.

As for the current music industry...train wreck. The only way to monetize what you do is to tour constantly. Why produce an "album?"
You and me would get along quite well. I love queen. First band I attached myself to and adore to this day. Freddie Mercury was a once in a lifetime talent. His presence, voice, and songwriting was second to none during his life. Was very intelligent and hilarious if you watch his interviews. The Show must go on was the greatest vocal performances I have ever heard and people forget he had full blown aids wgen singing this.

Welcome brother. I think the song Innuendo is amazing for the same reason. His voice on that album is amazing and the Show Must Go on is a great example.

To this day I cannot listen to Bijou without tearing up.

I was 13 at the time of Live Aid and I remember waking up early and watching the whole thing on MTV. Both U2 and Queen were great. And, the whole London show was terrific. At the time, getting live music from London, with all sorts of exotic acts who were not big in the US (Boomtown Rats, Status Quo, Bryan Ferry) was awesome. The Philly portion of Live Aid paled in comparison. And, I mean, absolutely paled in comparison. Billy Ocean, Beach Boys, Mick Jagger & Tina Turner. Much of it lame.

What are your top 3 albums? Mine are Night at the opera, the works, and innuendo.

I don't think I'm 'questioning' FM's performance style. Just saying I don't care for it. KISS has a unique performance style that has made them millions. I personally find them to be awful. Huge fans of theirs would also come to their defense and say that I'm silly for having a different opinion. I hope we can agree to disagree about Queen. There really aren't any objective 'facts' that prove you're right and I'm wrong or vice versa. It's one person's opinion.

Putting any credence in a list created by any entity in the music industry is kind of silly, imo. Who's the best guitarist? Best singer? It's all opinion. The list you mentioned is pretty much the same thing to me. The same Billboard magazine list that had Bob Dylan ahead of Bono? As a frontman? Dylan may be many things but a dynamic live performer he ain't. The same list that had Stevie Nicks ahead of Bono, Axl, Robert Plant and Jim Morrison? Joni Mitchell ahead of several of those mentioned previously. Joni Mitchell? Really? Paul McCartney (as a FRONTMAN) ahead of Mick Jagger. Uh, okay. Look, I'm not saying FM wasn't talented just that I never liked his music or performance.

I actually went to YouTube and watched Queen's Live Aid performance. I'm sorry - it bored me. Their music bores me. It's constructed well, played well but bores me. The performance of FM, which I can see why some people would find it amazing, was not my cup of tea. All personal opinion, of course.

Wow. Tough question.

1. A Night at the Opera
2. Day at the Races
3. The Game
4. Queen II
5. Sheer Heart Attack

I actually loved it when they did the songs like Fairy Feller's Master Stroke, Millionaires Waltz and Good ole Fashion Lover Boy or Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon....and then you get Mustapha which I also love. I like those songs almost better than their hits. Innuendo was almost too dark for me but maybe that is because I realized the context of Freddie's fading health. Vocally his best work.

I don't get it either.

They have some interesting songs... no doubt... but there's so much "better" stuff out there.

Also, I can't get into the "Freddie the Flamer" act. I much more enjoy, and can relate to, the "cockrock" type of material (Stones, Zep, DLR-era VH, etc)

Their early material was really unique in every sound. Their 80 material was really technical and let Brian may truly shine through. But Freddie Mercury was just someone to behold. Absolutely unreal how great he was.

Freddie the Flamer??? I believe everyone gave Freddie a pass because he was brilliant. He wasn’t your typical ***.

Meh. No doubt he was talented. So was Liberace.

When you find out, as a teenager, that one of your then-favorites is a homo... you lose interest pretty quickly.

Eh. I never let knowing his sexuality have any change on me. If you didn’t know he ****** men by 1980 then you were pretty blind. His gayness shines through. Especially when he grew a mustache.

Saw it today, and while not a huge fan of Queen, I thought they did a solid job with the portrayal of Freddie Mercury. Rami Malek did a passable impersonation of Mercury. And yes, the music and the Live Aid scene was the best part of the movie.
Who is Freddie Mercury?

But seriously I really did ask myself this when the trailers came out. Once I found out I couldn’t for the life of me understand why they didn’t cast Sasha Baron Cohen to play Mercury.

Only Queen songs I’d ever heard were WATC and WERY. I looked up Rhapsody, good god how did that become popular?

Btw, was Queen an all gay band and that’s why they called themselves Queen? TIA.

I kid. I actually like you as a poster compared to others. But wholeheartedly disagree with this post
It was MOSTLY joking. Except the Cohen part, and I’m only 30 and never really listened to rock much so the question on the Queen name was legit.

Freddie Mercury created the name. He was 100% gay. Loved men. But all other members were straight. John Deacon happily married for over 40 years. Brian may has been married twice and with the same woman since 1988. Roger Taylor likes chasing women

Did you know that Roger's son Rufus Tiger Taylor is the drummer for the band The Darkness.
