i have to say something...

i see a lot of (fair weather) fans on hear saying they are disinterested, dispassionate, or less supporting of an Iowa wrestling program that is perennially Top 1-5 in the nation.

i don't get it. if you love a program/team, that's some nancy ****.

it says more about you than the program.

you're not a fan, you're a frontrunner.
Bullshot!!! It's not that simple. Here comes the part where you scold Iowa fans who have grown tired of the current staff and the constant drama.

You can be a fan AND be unhappy with the current situation. It doesn't make you a bad fan. It doesn't make you a bad person. And if enough people voice their displeasure, either vocally or by not attending, that is an avenue to make a change.

Only a clown would say that fans cannot be disappointed in their team, especially when it comes to the team leadership.

I've seen Iowa fans boo plenty of other teams' wrestlers, most of them deservedly so, and plenty of worthless refs, and quite a few opposing coaches, but never Hawkeye wrestlers, even when they deserved it.
Refs and opponents are fair game. I once booed Chuck Yagla, but he was reffing that day and deserved it (in my view). His wife was about 4 rows in front of our group and she turned around and told me to STFD and STFU.

I understand Willie's point, but, that would only apply to fans who have stopped supporting the team completely or started rooting for another team because their team is no longer on top.

I'm a Steelers fan, and I have been very critical of the team over the last 10+ years. I still watch every game and cheer for them like I always do. They have annoyed and frustrated me, and I've voiced that to other fans. That does not make me a bad fan, and there isn't anything wrong with voicing frustration about things happening with your favorite team.

You can love and support the program and still be unhappy with the current coaching and product. I find myself supporting a few individuals and a few other I could boo but only boo at home. I don't like what I am seeing overall and being told you cant have an opinion is some serious socialist type comment from you Willard!

I wont blindly praise dear leader Brands just because I wear an Iowa wrestling shirt. I will be wearing that long after they are gone. Nobody is bigger than the program.

So you’re trying to rally the troops, so we do boo our own team?? Sure sounds like it. Pathetic.
Naw. You are pathetic for being upset because I asked a question. The thin-skinned nature of some on this board is pretty funny. It’s no wonder Penn State people can get everyone so riled up.

i didn't say THAT, dtripp. i'm a freakin Washington Redskins fan ffs.

you can be disappointed, you can voice displeasure. you can even boo.

what you can't do (imo) is 'check out' because they are the 3rd best team in the nation instead of the 1st.

doing so makes you a bandwagonner
Fair enough, but the majority of fans haven't "checked out". Fans who became fans because of Spencer Lee are probably leaving in droves (notice those season ticket sales) but us old heads are still planning to show up for our *** kicking tonight. We're not happy about it but we'll be there.

We don't like the fact that we cannot compete for a championship and that our style is nowhere close to the Gable style (search WWC Wrestling Omaha on YouTube if you want to see what Iowa wrestling used to be). Standing around and hand fighting but not shooting attempting to score is boring. Not turning or pinning dudes is boring. Fading and losing against a mid-level Wisconsin wrestler is boring (and infuriating). You wonder why some people have "checked out"

Also, you know who have checked out, in great numbers...young fans. I'm 53, I've been attending duals since the early 90s. I'm considered a young dude when I walk around CHA. That needs to change, but the kids these days identify more with another program then they do our program.

It was a perfectly legitimate question. I dont ever recall a boo's and ive been going to meets since mid 90's. Yes there is some very very thin skinned folks on this boards. Many dont like change of any sorts in their life. Cant even talk about things.

I get the question because it feels like tonight could get that ugly. I dont think you will ever see an individual get booed. Probably just real quiet with grumblings. Next season will push this fan base harder

Why some of you PSU fans, who follow a team that is currently lightyears ahead of Iowa, feel the need to come onto an Iowa board to defend your championship caliber team I will never understand.
Enjoy the winning while it lasts.
If PSU wasn’t winning everything, my guess is most of them who are here because they “love to talk about wrestling” would vanish like magic

I don't know you well enough to know whether or not you'll answer honestly or not but I'll try - Did you watch every snap of every commanders game this season?

I don’t understand the messaging. I’ve been called a pedo and a Penn state fan and told to stop being an Iowa fan and that I don’t have to watch by the apologists because of the fair criticism leveled at the program. Now I’m being told if I stop watching I’m not a real fan.

Can anyone explain the rules of fandom. If the team I’ve been a fan of most of my life stops resembling the team and what made me like them in the first place and with no plans or change on the horizon, what else can I do?

Thin skinned about boing our guys, yes.
Am I shi**** rainbows and butterflies about the current state of the program, not by a long shot.
This years BT & Nationals performance will be closely watched, along with how well Angelo performs. If those don’t go well I’ll be pretty disappointed. This season is a final straw for me.

I’ve been an Iowa fan since the day my dad and grandpa sat me down in front of the tv and let me watch an Iowa wrestling match on pbs and I will be an Iowa fan until the day I die.

That said I think there are some things about this program that you can be critical of while still being a fan.

1. three individual champs in 10+ years.
2. the complete and utter disappearance of our rtc.
3. Wrestling style (this is not Iowa style anymore) lack of offensive aggression, the inability to win seemingly any scramble that counts and matters.
4. Recruiting grinders and “they’re kinda guys” instead of athletes. Don’t get me wrong I love the murrins and pk’s but they have less room for growth.

I think all of this is fair criticism and has led to the falling off of the program.

Nationals last year was basically saved by Buchanan. I’ll be honest, I had an all sessions pass but only went to every night session. There’s just not the same energy at Nationals from an Iowa perspective. That’s not fair to Mikey because he’s a fantastic wrestler, just with a monster in the same weight class.

More fans than any other college team equals more fair weather fans. We also likely have more moderate fans (ie. crossovers with other sports) than most because Iowans grow up with the sport. Those are the ones who may be vocalizing their disinterest - not the wrestling first fans.

Willie,

I think it's a matter of the times. Many of these "fans" are trolls posing as Iowa fans just trying to spread chaos to bring down the program. Just like this thread was created to created booing/idiotic chanting tonight like we seen in NFL/college football as of late.

Other part is Iowa has seen an influx of fans at least attendance wise over the last 10 years and a small part of these fans are the ones you allude too.

Am I happy with the state of the program, no, but for the wrestlers and overall program sake, at least let the season wrestle out. Take all the notes along with way for your arguments latter.

Iowa's attendance over the years.

In the 90s we had a wrestler get stalled out (or damn close) against isu. IIRC there were some boos that night.

It's rare but it has happened. We prefer to save our boos for the opponent, but lackluster effort (there were a few last weekend) could earn the ire of the crowd tonight!

On a bigger note, can we please retire the woo thing? Absolutely the worst!!!
I would gladly trade you the fans “woooing” for 10 year olds shouting “We are” every 5 minutes.

So you only watch Hawk matches at the NCAA's?

Good wrestling is good wrestling and exciting to me no matter who it is.

I just got my tickets for this years tourney and will be cheering on the Hawks and several others. Win, lose or draw, NCAA's are always a good time regardless of how Iowa performs.

Perennially top 5 isn't good enough and never has been. You know this.

I absolutely love Iowa Wrestling. In fact, I love all Iowa sports and consume it as much as I can.

So if we can't be disinterested can we be not as excited? Is that okay? If we can't be dispassionate can we be semi-passionate? Are we allowed to be disappointed while still being supportive?
At what point are we allowed to voice this displeasure and what is the appropriate avenue for such discourse?

I like TNT and truly think we can't get better head coaches, but I'm still f*cking pissed off. I'm so f*cking angry we don't pursue better assistants and I'm embarrassed by our RTC. At what point does this boil over to disinterest? Oops, sorry l, that's not allowed!

Since you're so passionate about dispassionate fans, maybe you should cover this topic on your next podcast.

Lastly, I'm coming off a 6 day work week and have a sick toddler at home. If we're getting skunked at intermission I reserve the right to shut it off and if you don't like it you can eat my ***.

So you didn't watch every game and last year was a hell of a lot more enjoyable as a Washington football fan.
That's pretty much the point and
That's all that is happening at Iowa right now with wrestling. It's not about checking out bc we're 4th instead of 1st, it's the fact the product we're seeing is getting worse and we don't have even a punchers chance at winning nationals. Our expectation is we should be in the hunt every year and when we're not it's a major disappointment.
