You’re bat shi$# crazy. How many times have you been to SC to watch a PSU match? I’ve been a season ticket holder long enough to have seen 12 NCAA National Championship banners raised to the rafters in Rec Hall. Never, never, NEVER, have I heard ANY PSU fan boo one of our wrestlers.

I visit your message board occasionally, just for amusement and entertainment. It never disappoints.
What sort of a pathetic loser are you?

Whoever started the woo should be banned from carver for life along with anyone caught doing it. And I'm only half kidding ;).
I’ve argued this before, I’ll try again. This woo thing started as “pew,” the sound of a gun shot, when Sam Stoll returned to the lineup after the infamous gun shot wound. I remember the first night it happened and remember thinking, what the hell is this! I saw people laughing and asked the guy in front of me, who was laughing, what it was. He said they were mimicking a gun shot sound.

i have to say something...

i see a lot of (fair weather) fans on hear saying they are disinterested, dispassionate, or less supporting of an Iowa wrestling program that is perennially Top 1-5 in the nation.

i don't get it. if you love a program/team, that's some nancy ****.

it says more about you than the program.

you're not a fan, you're a frontrunner.

i didn't say THAT, dtripp. i'm a freakin Washington Redskins fan ffs.

you can be disappointed, you can voice displeasure. you can even boo.

what you can't do (imo) is 'check out' because they are the 3rd best team in the nation instead of the 1st.

doing so makes you a bandwagonner
I was already in a pissy mood, but following that abysmal showing at 174 my wife stands, walks around the back of the couch, leans over running her hands down my chest and sensually whispers in my ear, "Come to bed. I'll make you forget all about this."

I do nothing. I don't move. Instead I stare at the TV and quietly say, "No. I'm going to sit here and take it. I'm going to wallow in my own misery."

"Oooookay," she replies as she goes off to bed. Alone.

Upon further self-reflection I now firmly believe those that haven't checked out at this point are just idiots. We're all morans.

Is that acceptable for you? Please discuss with Basch on your next episode.

Entitlement mindset. Respect is earned. Excitement is earned.

I still love Iowa and desperately want them to succeed. Tom has to earn my respect and excitement.

Fandom doesn’t have to be a cult. You can voice dissent/dissatisfaction/disinterest and still be a fan.

And from a practical standpoint, disinterest is a means for moving the program in the right direction. Season tickets not selling out sends a message. Blind support doesn’t. If you’re a fan who wants to win and you don’t believe in Brands, you should be withholding support. Standards over participation trophies.

LOL. I’ve been there my man. With my Mets and Giants

it’s why I love Penn State wrestling. The one team that never lets me down.

To the rest of the Iowa faithful here..I feel for you guys right now. I mean it

Have Iowa wrestling fans ever booed their own team at Carver?? I’ve only had season tickets since 2013 and I don’t recall it ever happening. Did it ever happen at the end of the Zalesky regime??
There wasn't over 3500 fans at the meets at the end of the Zalesky era and that's no joke. My wife dropped me off and picked me up because no one else in my family wanted to go. It was a snooze fest. I am not bragging on what happened up there Friday night either. That was a embarrassment to the sport of wresting. Why would anyone want to spend money on that product. Horrible

I don't want to be argumentative, but it started when Stoll was battling injury and we had the meet against Lehigh locked up and we sent out the back-up ( kid from Dubuque, it's too early in the morning for names to work in my brain) in his place against Lehigh's highly ranked returning AA (also his name not coming to me). People started the woo making fun of him beating up on a back-up. I think it was before Stoll got shot, so I don't think it was a pew, but that would make sense if it was after.

That was a sad time. I liked Jimmy, but it was a couple years overdue. I din't want Brands to come at that time, but he grew on me. I think it's overdue for him now.

So you only watch Hawk matches at the NCAA's?

Good wrestling is good wrestling and exciting to me no matter who it is.

I just got my tickets for this years tourney and will be cheering on the Hawks and several others. Win, lose or draw, NCAA's are always a good time regardless of how Iowa performs.
It more had to do with the idiotic plan to always, without fail, have the NCAA wrestling championship the opening weekend of March Madness. Literally choose any other weekend, but that one. And the NCAA won’t do it. It’s crazy.

You also have a lot more fans who think because they played football in high school they know more than the coaches. Wrestling fans, in my opinion, whether they competed at a high level or not, tend to understand what it takes to get to this level. Someone could get teched tonight and there is a better than average chance that will happen, I doubt there will be anyone booing as long as the person gives effort. If the person flat out quits - then maybe and deservedly so.

I’ve been an Iowa fan since the day my dad and grandpa sat me down in front of the tv and let me watch an Iowa wrestling match on pbs and I will be an Iowa fan until the day I die.

That said I think there are some things about this program that you can be critical of while still being a fan.

1. three individual champs in 10+ years.
2. the complete and utter disappearance of our rtc.
3. Wrestling style (this is not Iowa style anymore) lack of offensive aggression, the inability to win seemingly any scramble that counts and matters.
4. Recruiting grinders and “they’re kinda guys” instead of athletes. Don’t get me wrong I love the murrins and pk’s but they have less room for growth.

I think all of this is fair criticism and has led to the falling off of the program.
They have done a better job not going after grinders the last 3-4 classes, but lost the ultimate grinder that everyone wanted in 2026 class. Would you call any of the 2026,2027,2028 recruits we have so far grinders?

Who did you want them to hire back then? Brands seemed like a no brainer.

When they hired Brands they thought they had the next Gable. He was given a pass when his double recruiting class won it all. Look back and see how many times he has truly challenged for a national title in 20 years. He has 4 GREAT. Covid DOES NOT COUNT. I say he has had 1 or 2 total. Better then everyone other then PSU, but. Not up to Iowa standards. Keep running out the say old lines after a poor performance. Come March there should be a change. Iowa is becoming the Pittsburg Steelers of college wrestling always have a winning record but not getting over the hump.IMO

The obvious choice would have been Cael. They screwed the pooch on that one.
Hindsight, and highly unlikely you could have plugged and played Karl at any school and had the same results he's had at PSU. MAYBE at one of the other perennial schools like Iowa, but certainly no guarantee. Same could probably be said for Gable/Iowa.

I heard quite a bit of booing during the match on Friday. What was that targeted to?

Actually, and I hate to say it, Tom Ryan. He was a more proven and more mature coach at that time. Not the whiner he turned into. Tom had been a head coach for a couple of years, but still acted pretty immature at the time and I didn't know what to expect from him.
The obvious choice would have been Cael. They screwed the pooch on that one.
My mind is foggy about the whole timeline right now. I don't remember if ISU had just booted Douglas to make sure they kept Cael. I think it was all started because Hellickson was retiring and Gable was afraid Brands would go to tOSU, so we booted Zalesky to get Brands before we lost him, so ISU panicked and booted Douglas because they were afraid we'd take Cael like we did Gable back in the day, taking him off the table. Then he bailed on them in a couple of years anyway. I think that's how it all played out. Then Brands brought Gable back as an assistant for a year until he coaxed Terry away from the Training Center. When tOSU missed on Brands, they took Ryan, who was an established, successful head coach already.
