Florida could be legit again, though I still argue Walter Clayton was the main reason for thier run last year. We shall see how they do after him.
Yeah, without Walter Clayton, they lose early in the tournament. He pulled them out of the fire against UConn in the 2nd round and every game that followed.
Iowa State had them dead to rights and Walter came to the rescue.
Houston had them beat, until Clayton went off. I don't think that's a guy that is very easily replaced and Boogie Fland is definitely not the second coming of WC.

On paper this is high level starting 5, but I think we take a step back with the 3 guards that left.

Lee
Fland
Haugh
Condon
Chinyelu
I absolutely love Chinyelu, that guy is a freaking beast.

Not a big fan of Condon. He has weak hands and consistently gets stripped, or loses the ball. I expect him to be better this year though.

I noticed you have 3 bigs in your lineup (Haugh, Chinyelu and Condon), would he actually run that?

Not saying Fland isn’t a talent but Arkansas played better after he went out. Or maybe it was the coaching.
He played with no shooting. A lineup of Aidoo, Thiero, Wagner, Fland, David is doomed to fail due to lack of shooting and court spacing. That's 3 guards who need the ball, 2 bigs who are athletic but can't shoot.

It was coaching 100%. Fland was doing everything Cal wants his star players to do, which is me-ball and is why we lost so many games on Cal's watch.

Fland is a good player that plays hard and is definitely skilled, but he needs to be in a better system than whatever it is that Cal runs. Fland made a good choice by not returning to Cal-U.

Comparing Fland to Clayton isn’t fair. Fland is a Sophomore coming in to his first year with UF. Clayton was a Senior in his second year in the semester. It’s just not fair to expect him to replicate Clayton. Plus, he doesn’t have Clayton’s supporting cast either. No Richard, no Martin, no Aberdeen. Their backcourt is nowhere near as good, IMHO.

Luckily, for UF it doesn’t have to be that good. The SEC is down. Everybody lost a bunch of Seniors and many of them fifth year (COVID year) Seniors. Those guys are gone and everyone is counting on Portal guys to come in and lead the way.

UF’s frontcourt looks really strong though. Their big three have experience and should make them near unstoppable on the boards.

Just not sure how far they can go with Lee and Fland as their backcourt. That’s a huge drop off and we all know guards can make or break you in the NCAA tourney.

But like I said, the competition should be less strenuous across the boards. Most of the really good teams last season will really miss their strong Senior classes from this past year.

I don’t disagree with the sentiment, but Florida did. It play ISU.

Yes… 3, 5, 4, respectively.

Did Condon announce withdraw from the draft that I missed? Just wondering why people are so sure Condon will be playing at UF next year

I don't think Fland will fit well with Lee, just like he didn't fit well with Wagner. It's odd he keeps going to schools that already have ball-dominant guards on the roster.

Yes, Haugh is going to start at the 3, but play the 4 also..

Looking past all the hype, one has to question a good player leaving a HOF coach after following him from one place to another. Big Z left, now Fland.
I know us UK fans have our feelings about Cal but it seems the shine is fading from Cal much more than some want to admit.
Looking like that Barnum and Bailey act he does has seen its better days

The difference is Wagner was a 29-30% 3pt shooter. Lee just shot 37% from 3. You can have multiple ball dominant Guards if they can shoot. They just learn to play off of each other. Throw in Haugh who shot 34% from 3 on the wing and you have guys who can knock down outside shots and put the ball on the floor and create for those bigs.

And Haugh’s size added to his ability to shoot and put it on the floor will be hard to handle at the 3 spot.

I'm a huge fan of Alex Lloyd and think he's one of the most underrated recruits in '25 class and also think AJ Brown is a nice bench/rotation guy for you-he can hit the corner 3 at a high rate and has that quick release that can look silly but if you can make it-helps.

You won't be '25 level in backcourt but don't have to be-each team takes on it's own persona but can be a contender in a different way. Let's put it this way--I'd rather see Boogie Fland and Xaivian Lee back there with rest of the team than just relying on some of other limited options this late in Portal or all FR. Fland was/is one of my favorite players to watch and was a guy I was hoping would stay in Lexington after change--he's just a winning player. Like the fit with Golden too. He lets the guards play with freedom and that will be a damn good backcourt/team again this year.

Another guy to watch for your Gators--CJ Ingram. Now he's focused on basketball and not splitting time with both sports--he's going to be a nice addition for the UF Staff. I think he can grow over course of his career into a taller Alijah Martin with his toughness/athleticism.

Don’t get me wrong because Fland definitely has talent but it seems odd he isn’t staying loyal to Cal even with competition. They played better without him as well. It’ll be interesting to see how he does at UF. Hope he lights Ark up either way.

That backcourt (Fland, Lee) is a turnstile on defense….but that frontcourt with or without Condon is going to block shoots and rebound like mad. Florida should be Top 25 good but not Top 10 good.

I don't care for the fit, Fland/Lee, but they will still be a top 5-10 team. I'd certainly have them above UL, Duke, Arkansas, etc. maybe Kentucky too.
