There was a really good piece in The Athletic about the actual origins of the KU-Mizzou rivalry. It dates back to the bloodshed, vigilantism and slavery before and during the civil war.

I knew a little about that conflict, the James and Younger Bros, John Brown* and General Order No. 11. But never really appreciated its continued relevance and bitterness today.

Not exactly an established rivalry, but another ongoing good game between geographical neighbors right now is WVU vs Ohio U in Athens.
