it became pretty obvious that the whole hit piece was because Shaughnessy was butt hurt over some guy not being invited to Cal's house.

Shaughnessy is pretty well hated anyways so I guess he's into the I got nothing to lose part of his career.

Dan Shaughnessy should fired for that bush league nonsense...nothing more than sour grapes from 20 years ago...

The national media needs to wake up and realize that Cal and UK are about the only prominent coach and program who aren't making negative news right now.

People can only look at UK and cry about all the players going pro...which is not illegal...Cal at uk has always had his kids near the top of the GPA bracket in the sec...by all accounts they are good kids...no assaults to date...no intentionally easy classes...

It's time for folks to quit waiting for Calipari to mess up and time for them start worrying and writing about some things going down at other programs...

Sports journalism has really gone down the dumper...beat writers from coast to coast, talking heads, and analysts should all really be disgusted with the quality of their collective product right now...they all sound like a broken record and it seems like their reading from the same script...and none of them seem to really want to dive into real stories

I don't read anyone backing Cal on this one........the writer slams Cal, and in the end of the piece, it's more hate being spewed.

"So I apologize to Dan for even considering criticizing this column. I
used to think John Calipari was just another coach operating in the
sleazy world of major NCAA sports. But after reading this, I now understand he's one of history's greatest monsters. Thanks for setting us all straight."

How dare Cal not invite everyone to his house? What a bunch of media bullying!

There are some angry people out there who take advantage of an article to justify their existence.

So much for professionalism in this one.

Someone here has never heard of sarcasm apparently. The writer did an excellent job portraying the globe writer as a complete and total idiot. Well done

Not his fault. Most people in Valley Station have zero sense of humor.

What Shaughnessy left out of his screed is that Calipari shut out the Globe because the paper illegally obtained his players' transcripts and published them. He was trying to protect his players and send a message to the media that he was not going to tolerate violations of their privacy in the name of headlines and selling newspapers. he would do the exact same thing today if the Herald-leader or Courier-Journal obtained players' transcripts or other private information and disclosed them.

Jerry Thornton is a pretty entertaining guy. He used to write blogs for Barstool Sports and I am pretty sure he is a stand up comic. Satire and sarcasm are part of his style. If you didn't catch the sarcasm at the end of his piece, you certainly don't get his style of writing or sense of humor. I am not a huge twitter guy, but he is worth following.

I've been living just outside of Boston for 6 years. Dan is a hack and just tries to stir things up. He not only has an issue with Coach Cal, he has an issue with UMass Athletics in general. He was just on the radio up here running his trap. Dude is an idiot and everyone up here knows that.

He is no different than the other people who write such garbage. Agenda driven and knows what will get attention.

Best line in his entire piece, You might not like it, but as Michael Corleone told Senator Geary, "We're all part of the same hypocrisy."

UNC gets exposed for being frauds, with 20+ years of cheating. Shaughnessy be like:

UL suspends its starting PG, brings him right back to win a game, then boots him. Later turns out he is accused of a double rape. Shaughnessy be like:

Duke covers up 2 sexual assaults, finally boots player when news is about to come to light. Shaughnessy be like:

Kansas has to sit a star player out because apparently he and his mom were cashing checks from an agent or some financial service this summer. Shaughnessy be like:

Syracuse gets nailed for YEARS of academic fraud, failed drug test, and paying players. Shaughnessy be like:

But OH NOES! UMass has the audacity to honor Coach Cal 20 years after he took them to the FF?!!! Shaughnessy be like:

why hasn't cal been caught cheating? why was cal vindicated by the ncaa in each player's matter? "because he's good"

wow, this guy has nothing. but i'll humor him.

references michigan as some sort of ethical precedent, and they're not even remotely the same situations. fischer remained coaching at michigan another 5 seasons after '93. he wasn't fired until the maurice taylor incident. and it took another 5 years after that before ed martin was connected to weber, bullock and traylor back to the late 80's and early 90's. so how is this even remotely the same as umass? sorry bro, umass didn't cheat like that. calls

so cal is responsible like a president who has something happen on "his watch". oh, so that's how the world works? is bush going to court? who says that's how it is with anything? if that were the case, i think we'd hear more rumblings from the press about unc**.

so he gets to write a piece on cal while reaching with proof-less generalizations. hey man, are you banging the editor?

oh yeah, "then why did cal appologize later?" i don't know jim, maybe because the reporter was a innocent victim - who represented a newspaper who had another employee illegally acquire player's transcripts?

Maybe Cal apologized because he wasn't the one who said the ******* couldn't come to his house.

That guy has a hard on for UMass and everything associated with it. He's better than they are but they get more publicity than he does. He knows he looks like an idiot, but he doesn't care because to him writing that crap about Cal is worth the trade of his integrity.

I wonder if the NCAA is as "deeply troubled" about UMass' recognition of Coach Cal as they were UK's little 500-win celebration?
