That is certainly an opinion. Not all coaches subscribe to that though. As mentioned above, Spurier had no issue with it.

To me personally, I lost a little respect for spurrier in the presser after the 2010 Kentucky game when he tried to pin his clock mismanagement at the end on Garcia, which was bs. That was the game the week after beating Alabama; led 28-10 at the half, gave up 21 unanswered including the go ahead on a 4th and 23 with 1:15 left to the only player (Randall Cobb) on kentuckys team, uncovered in the end zone. Then gave up the two point conversion to the same guy, again uncovered. Then Spurrier lost his composure while the clock ticked down, leaving a hail mary at the end as our only chance. That was the beginning of garcia’s downfall; he kind of just said f it.

Syvelle Newton was a duel threat QB who was more of a runner than a passer and was not a good fit for Spurrier's offense. He was recruited here by Lou Holtz and it was bad luck for him that there was a coaching change and a new offensive philosophy. He probably would have been better suited playing at a different school that ran more of a running QB offense if he wanted more play time at the qb position, probably at a non power 5 school or in the FCS at that time.

I personally feel like Spurrier did try to find a way to get Newton on the field as he was a talented athlete. I seem to remember he tried RB, WR, and CB. He just wasnt a good enough passer to run Spurrier's system.

I dont really buy it when Newton is claiming that Steve was a racist and thats why he didnt play QB full time for us after the 2004 season. Yeah. Calling someone out for something they didn't do is pretty bad.

Calling out a mistake that someone actually did make and saying something about how we'll work on that etc is different, imo.

I get that some players and some fans like the different coaching approaches. Call out mistakes, dont call out mistakes. Just be honest about it.

Agreed but.... I've calmed down and this is the bottom line truth for me:

Did we really expect to go undefeated this year? No. Ergo, there was / is going to be at least one loss. May as well have been MSU.

Looking at the positives from the game: We killed ourselves TWICE inside the red zone in the 1st half / quarter. Strip, fumble recovery was taken away from us inside their 10. (21 pts right there) - Our OL was very much improved. Our running game was very much improved. We've got one heck of a field goal kicker apparently. WR's were not dropping balls all over the place. - We didn't get any "stupid" penalties like fighting, jawing, etc......

My point?? - We're absolutely fed up with the proverbial ball being yanked out from underneath us - I get that as much as anyone, but... with a few bounces going our way, we'd have literally blown MSU out of the building in the first half. - We're just going to have to wait and see how it all shakes out. - But one thing is for sure for me - I'd take the team that played MSU last Saturday over any of the teams we've fielded over the last 2 years. Wouldn't you? Wouldn't any of us?

Before anyone else brings it up: I have no answers for the inexcusable blown coverages against Towson (another wide open TD) and against MSU. That needs to be corrected immediately. I don't think we're as bad overall as it feels like right now. JMHO.

It’s been a minute since I listened to the podcast I’m referring to, and I truthfully don’t remember the exact specifics, but it wasn’t about not being allowed to play qb. It had to do with promises or agreements spurrier had made to play syvellle some kind of way in addition to defensive back that was aimed at helping his pro career that he (spurrier) reneged on. I just can’t remember exactly now, but it struck me as pretty douchee.

And don’t get me wrong, Spurrier’s the greatest thing that ever happened to us. The day he walked on that stage with black sport coat and garnet tie for McGee to announce him was like Ed Sullivan saying ‘The Beatles!’

When asked about people talking about Cutter getting a shot, Briles responded with something to the effect of "I don't look at social media" then followed with a bit of coach speak. That's how you answer that. Josh Pate mentioned a couple of years ago how Beamer needs to lose the rabbit ears and he's right. When every presser begins with his addressing BS from social media and message boards, it just smacks of an overly sensitive guy who has his focus in the wrong place.
