Question for KW23? How far is it from the parking lot to the vistiors side at Concord. Never been there and walking a far distance is a problem for me. Thanks.

You may be able to park next to the field house if you let them know you have mobility problems. From there, it's pretty close.

even better than that, if u get their early enough u can probably drive into the stadium through the lower gate for emergency vehicles, and possibly park around the top rim of the stadium from the visitors side. I had an old coach of mine who is wheel chair bound do that last year and he watched the game from his car. Parking lot at fieldhouse is close but usually filled with players vehicles.

Thanks KW. I'm probably going to have to start using a walker pretty soon and walking a long distance for me is out of the question.

Been doing a little studying up on the double wing formation since that will be our new offense. Basically you have 1 wr, 1 te, 2 wingbacks and 1 fullback. The wr can be out wide or on the line of scrimmage. Noticed at practice that this will be a running play most of the time but they did throw out of it some. Swing passes to either side or a throw over the middle. I think we have seen the last of trying to throw deep. Thank goodness. Also heard that Stanback may be the fullback with Emery at one wing. Not sure about the other wing. Still haven't settled on a QB. One kid can scramble but not throw very well. The other kid throws better but is not very mobile. Still feel like the jv kid from last year may get the start. Not having played much football in my life I'm sure some guys on here can explain the "double wing" better than me. Also "Pop" Warner come up with this formation.

J.V. QB from last year will probably get it. He is just more athletic.

If you want to preview of the double wing formation, go to YouTube and watch Army's offense. I believe Army runs the Flexbone, but it's the closest thing you'll see to the double wing if I'm not mistaken. It's short of an option offense.

I haven't seen many High Schools run the double wing.....this is a pretty complicated offense that has to be executed perfectly. You need a smart QB that makes "Good" quick decisions. But if its ran right, it's hard to stop....

Expect our RB to have over 300 yards a night...

What little I know about the double wing is that there is a lot of motion with the backs and misdirection or traps are a stable of this offense. If it is run right it is a hard offense to defend. The one good thing about running this offense is that there aren't that many teams that run it which will make it a little harder to defend because most teams haven't seen that much of it.

It's a good offense when you have some speed and quickness and your line doesn't look like the Dallas Cowboys. Many teams still have success with it and the many variations of it in principle, most notably the Wing T. James Kenan killed us with it 2 years ago and Wallace won with it last year too. It still works.

I didn't know that JK and WRH ran the double wing. Do you know of any other H.S. that runs the double wing. I would like to check them out on YouTube.

Sway there's a clip on you tube of CATA last year where Coach Smith coached. Will give you a good view of the double wing. I also noticed at practice that the O line is shoulder to shoulder. No gaps. Interesting.

It'll be a different thing to watch this season and going forward. We are all used to the Pro Set O at Albemarle with 2 backs 1 TE and two WR.

Like I said, this Offense is built off of misdirection and reads....shoulder too shoulder could be the best way to hide the ball...?

I need to take a deep dive into this O when I get home. Every O has logic and reason behind it.

I just hope our QB will catch on fast and tune some mechanics. Either way you look at it, Albemarle can go toe to toe with any team in 1A realistically. There were only a hand full of teams that can blow out Albemarle at the 1A level last year( Murphy, Swain, WRH, JK, WM and StarM, RVille) .

But now with our new coach and an entourage of new assistant coaches, Albemarle will be king of the hill once again.

Sway I love your optimism. I hope you are right.

I was optimistic when everyone was saying that we will not have a high school this year.

As far as 1A West goes, it will come down to Albemarle/Murphy/ and R-Ville. I don't look for 1A East to be that strong this year. They had one win and that was against Murphy I believe.

West ran Wing T for years under Holt, Thomas and Haire I believe. Pate ran Flexbone which wasn't too different than Wing T so the boys picked up on it quick. Fun to watch as is the Notre Dame box formation. Bishop McGuiness ran this n the playoffs against WM in 2009. Also can we start a new thread on Albbemarles new Coach and offense? Yall ain't closing this year. It ain't breaking news anymore..unless the NCC is trying to set some kind of record for posts. And if you are, our chapter wants to split the profit.

Love the N.Box. You need a big line though.

According to Sway Albemarle has all ready won the BCS National Championship!! And I agree Spud... these Albemarle fans want to take the title of most posts in a season... I have no problem with that as long as it stays open after we kick that bullpuppy tail again.... Ha Ha!! Keep drinking Sway, that hangover won't hurt as bad as this season will!!! If it stays open... we can go back and pull quotes from some of the candid humor that makes Albemarle who they are!!

Thanks Foot.....does that mean we will have a good chance of beating WM this year and take the crown?
All I know is Kenan killed us with it and Starmount used it and some timely plays on special teams to squeak by us, so we have hopefully figured out how to stop it by now! But the practice in the YVC will definitely help us down the road hopefully. :p

Went to practice tonight so I'll make this short and sweet. Coach Smith shook my hand and I asked what he thought. All he said was "we got a lot of work to do" Goodnight all!!!!

To heck with going to bed. I'm to pumped. This season is going to be one where I don't have a clue how we'll do. I know everybody is fired up and all the teams think they are world beaters at this point. Wish I were the eternal optimist like Sway but I'm not. Just think we have a new coach (what else is new) and he is installing a whole new offense. By the way we ha 37 out tonight and I understand that 40 will be max. No JV team this year which could hurt us down the road but there was no choice. These kids are going to have a lot asked of them and I hope they respond. Noticed tonight there were several groups with coaches and they seem to be having FUN! That is important. Also there was no down time as in years past. Something going on for 3 hrs. NO BD we are not world beaters and we could take our lumps this year. I am one Albemarle Fan that has seen us get our butt handed to us on more than one occasion. OK here's what most people think. We should for sure lose to Concord and WM. My thinking is Thomasville could be a tossup. NS, EM, and NM are teams that could upset us. However we are Albemarle and that does mean something. If these kids play with that tradition in their hearts and minds who knows what we can do this year. We might just be "World Beaters".

Buddy, there's a lot of work to be done. We will be o.k. I need to make it up there and check them out. My schedule is so busy. I'm mainly free on the weekends.

But Buddy, I wouldn't judge a bad practice as the fate of the season, if that's what you saw today. Like Tango said....this year we will feel some growing pains.

These guys haven't had a coach in three years lol. I spoke to past players, and ol "Pants on the Ground" was never a good coach....so honestly, we haven't had a coach in 3....long.....years.

That's good that they are buying into it. That's the most important thing. Heck, these kids wanna win. Smith won't have a motivation issue at Albemarle![/QUOTE

Here are my thoughts:

We are going to be able to control the clock. We have 2 big physical backs that avg over 5 per carry last season. We still have some big physical guys on the line as well.

In the scrimmage I will be watching four areas mainly.
1) special teams - are we disciplined on our lanes and not allowing big returns

2) defense - last year we held up pretty well at the jamboree which showed during the season. How physical are we and can we tackle in the open field well.

3) passing - with our RB we don't need a great passing game but need to be good enough to make the defenses respect it.

4) can emery hang on to the ball. He had some big gains last year that were nullified due to fumbles. Him and Steinbach have the potential to dominate.

I noticed some of the guys are bigger and definitely stronger and we do have a lot of speed. We will have bumps in the road but keep in mind we did lose 20 players last year. With that being said these guys do know people are counting them out and are hungry to prove themselves.

I'm looking forward to watching these kids play. They are definitely putting the work in.

How practice went last night. Spent a lot of time with the O and trying to get the timing down. 2 kids are trying to nail down the qb postion and so far both have pluses and minuses. A smooth qb is a must in the DW and have a lot of work to do at that position. Also the OL is of unknown quality at this point. Mostly new kids on the OL and don't know yet how they will do. However we are in very good shape at the 2 wings and FB. Could be our real strength.
Defense. Coach Smith has yet to address the defense as he is spending most of the practice on offense. This offense takes time, time and more time to get all the bugs out. So I for one think the defense will be pretty simple since the kids have so much to learn and remember on offense. As a lot of kids will be going both ways we don't want to overload their minds with to much to remember.
Seem to have enough assistant coaches for a change and this seems to be a big plus. All the kids are getting individual attention which has been lacking.
IF and I say IF we can get this offense down I think it will be very effective as the teams we play will not have played against it that much. I am hoping it will be a time consuming offense that can eat a lot of clock whereby the defense wan't be on the field that much.
In answer to nations question they are also working a lot on the kids STAYING in their lanes on kickoffs. Last year we got hurt a lot on this issue.
Think the jamboree we answer a lot of questions as we are put to the test against a live defense. Then I think we will all know just how good we are and can be.
Look for an exciting year at Albemarle as I believe these kids want to win and win badly if nothing else than to just prove to people what they can do. Go Dogs.

This may have already been answered and if so I'm sorry to ask again. Buddy and the Bulldog faithful, who will be at your jamboree? I might do some super secret advance scouting!

Last I heard Foot it will be Charlotte Latin and Salisbury. Charlotte Latin is always a good test and Salisbury is up and down. Look for a lot of advanced scouting from teams on our schedule just to see what Albemarle has this year. If you do make it foot would love to meet up with you.

Like I said, you have to have a pretty top notch QB to run this offense. This O is based on a lot of misdirection and "Quick" reads. You have to "SELL THE PLAY". I'll give you a prefect example. Remember the QB from WM Capel, He flourished in the read option. He made quick decisions and had the speed to go with it. And when you gave him too much respect, a RB would burn you for 30yds. That's what type of QB your looking at. Since these guys never ran a read option style offense, they will have to learn. Albemarle's O has been like: Run, Run, Run, Pass and then scramble when the OL breaks down. Our QB's have never had to read anything, just feed the beast and float one every now and then.

Expect Albemarle QB and wings to run into each other a couple times......and expect a good licking on our QB when he makes the wrong read. They will get better throughout time.

I like what Smith is bringing to the table, now our players have to step it up a notch and really think through the processes. Knowing when to pull or when to give, keeping the defense off balance. We have been one dimensional for the past 3 years now. Christian was the best mobile QB we ever had...our guys need to go back and study him a little.

We are two weeks out and this week is already over.

I'll never forget the first time we saw Capel make a read and pitch. It was against South Robeson and you talk about a crowd holding their breath. He was a sophomore at the time and you see how he developed.

Couple notes from practice tonight. Talked to Coach Smith quite a while and couple things surprised me. This is only the second year he has run the double wing, last year at CATA and this year at Albemarle. He said the only way this offense will work is if the players are very PHYSICAL!!!!!! Hear that guys . Still haven't settled on a QB.
Tomorrow night should be fun. Why? Because we can start HITTING. Yeah!!!! Short and sweet tonight guys.

After talking to coach Smith and what I have seen in practice one of the main things he is trying to teach the guys is to stay low. No more straight up blocking and running the football. They have a contraption where the linemen and runners alike are almost in a duck walk having to stay low to go under it. Some are falling down trying to do it and balance is the key to it. However it does build strong legs. As I see it gives the linemen a chance to get under the shoulder pads of the defensive man and drive him off the ball. As I also see it the key to the DW is a very smart QB who can make quick and good decisions with the ball and also a strong and aggressive OL. As I said before we are blessed this year with 2 good strong running backs. This DW reminds me a lot of the single wind which Albemarle ran to perfection back in the 50's under Toby Webb. In the first few games I can see some missed handoffs and running into each other in the backfield. But I think we are commited to run this and in time I think we will get better and better at it. The kids have to really think a lot in this offense and I believe they have made a good beginning. When this formation is run the right way it is almost impossible to defend against. It is going to get positive yds. And when the defense stacks the line of scrimmage you can always throw out of it. From what I have seen so far I LOVE the double wing formation and the kids do too. So all we have to do is get on the same page and make it work. I think in time we will but everybody has to be patient and give the coaches and players time to works the bugs out.

I hope that They settle on a Quarterback soon. Probably it will be which one is more comfortable on this kind of Offence. I was watching the NS/CATA game from last year and it looked like a well Coached Offence

It was 95 degrees at the first game last year. On You Tube go to Stanly County Monday night Football ands look up North Stanly/ Cata game 2014. Curcio interviews Scott Smith before the game
