People generally get what they deserve... this case is no different.

Sentence seems a little harsh but if you're stupid enough to bring drugs into a foreign country, especially Russia... well, again... she got what she deserved.

Russia wants 9.5 years. Wow.

Obviously that's absurd for something so minuscule.. but you have to kind of laugh. Russia is doing this because all eyes are on them now and they can't back down. And why are all the eyes on BG and Russia? Because the left had to make a big stink about a Liberal, *****, Women's basketball player being arrested.

It's almost like.. they made this worse. Should have just pretended it was a straight white conservative.. or heck, even just a black male college player.. and this might not have turned into a nightmare for BG..

They did. Now Russia has to make sure to not look weak. Plus...they're really probably posturing up for an even better trade. They probably want the merchant of death and the removal of financial sanctions.

Dang, 9 years is rough for a little THC. Plus, it's not like she can Billy Hayes herself either -- even if she escapes it's gonna be tough to blend in with Russians while you make your way to freedom when you're a 6'9" black dude with dreadlocks.

I suspect the "smuggling" conviction was the worst of the two and probably where the bulk of her time comes from.

Either way, don't try to smuggle drugs into foreign countries and this never happens. We expect foreign visitors to respect our laws. Have to be willing to do the same.

Do the crime you do the time
So I guess the prisoner swap is off the table ?

God I Hope so. You cannot trade a potential murderer of multiple US citizens down the road for Griner. One person is not worth risking the lives of many later on if this deal goes through.

I am absolutely die hard republican. I am 100% positive me and Griner voted different but at the end of the day she's American and doesn't deserve 9 years for her crime. The biden administration failed her just as they have failed 95% of the rest of the country. This administration has let Russia drag their you know what across their faces and said what you gonna do about? Shameful.

True to an extent....but "deserve" is debatable. My hunch is there are far worse penalties for Russia's own under the same circumstances.

Nine years is way too much. Obviously other circumstances played into her penalty being so harsh. But she does bear the responsibility of knowing what she can and cannot take into Russia.

Doubt it. Had she been Russian she would probably be free. Her main crime was being an American and putin not respecting biden. Under Trump this doesn't happen.

I feel the Laws are more so arbitrarily written to serve certain interests or groups of people.

Is this a fact or an assumption? You may have a JD or BA in Russian criminal law ramifications or some other expertise. I just am interested in the basis of your comment.

Aside: In retrospect, I suspect Biden reaching out before Griner was sentenced, probably looked desperate to Putin from a negotiation perspective. He should have simply stated they were aware of the case and watching to see how Russia’s legal system would handle the simple matter. IF Putin was not involved before the administration made a demand, he certainly was afterwards.

Jesus Christ! Are you nuts? 10 years for possession of a dried plant?

Smuggling was the serious charge

What does her nationality have to do with it? American citizenship doesn't come with a get out of jail free card.

A large (maybe the biggest) part of traveling abroad is a respect for their culture which especially includes their laws. They don't have constitutional protections. When you go elsewhere, you are at their mercy.

Like another poster pointed out, she was briefed about all this from the state department. So she has more knowledge and awareness then the average person; yet still took the risk.

We shouldn't negotiate at all. However if we ever do, it should be for a citizen jailed for purely political reasons. Not a nitwit who got busted trying to bring drugs into a country with harsh anti drug laws.

Would be so awesome if people here got ten years for weed. A loser free America! I bet you wouldn’t see as many tattoos either.
As a relatively recent convert to the wonders of cannabis, I must say

to this post.

I’m just imagining how happy and proud eyou were when you fired off the “black dude” comment. Bet you read it several times smiling and thinking how great it would play with the geniuses on here. Pat yourself on the back for that one. You really nailed her.

Someone is very angry we couldn't use political theater, virtue signaling and the releasing of a Russian War Criminal.. just to do a liberal victory lap over someone being exonerated, who they didn't know existed until last month.

Like I said, none of you knew who Jeff Harper was, so it's hard to believe any of you really cared about Britney Griner. This was about getting someone from "your" side home.

I expect to read your monthly pen pal letters you send to BG in earnest.

It actually made me far more happy knowing that -- just like Pavlov's dogs -- you would reflexively reply after I rung the bell. That's a good boy! Who's a good boy? Ed's a good boy!

I mean I wasn’t surprised. You constantly take shots like that. Poor taste is your speciality.

And let me be clear. BG needs to be released ASAP. F those Russians. But you tatted up pot smokers are a scourge on society. Downtowns are littered with your ilk just laying about the sidewalks. Gross.
< - - enjoy a little smoke on occasion.

Somewhat agreed, Wayne. Eff the Ruskies. Repeat. Eff them. Griner planned on playing her 8th season for EK ballclub before this untimely bust. My feelings on the matter are well-known up in Ukraine thread regarding her incarceration. Personally speaking, I consider BG a political prisoner. Hoping for a quick release.

Griner, who is considered a minor celebrity in Russia, received lots of support from, get this, her captors, themselves.

By the way, I've seen "Stretch" play against UTexas here in ATX at Erwin Center, February 2013. My primary reason for attending that game was so I could see her dunk. She did not disappoint. Crowd went nuts.

But as others argue, it's not only unwise, but also unlawful to carry contraband when traveling outside USA.
