Forgot about this. I think I remember the same thing last season when Bennett quit. Roughly same timing, IIRC. The big thing is, most rosters are set and money is spent. Or at least I remember that being talked about in UVAs case.
Who is Auburns projected best player? The little point guard that started to get hot near the end? Seriously asking

After the release of him resigning, he has said he considered politics but Auburn made him a deal where he could be "Auburns senator". His son has a 5 year deal and Bruce will be around for advice and support. These days are very different in team building. Mo ey may cure most of Stevens ills.

Steven may be fine depending on the assistants he has around him. If politics isn't it, its either health or wanting to enjoy his golden years or even some combination of all of it. I've grown to like Bruce and this could be bad for the SEC.

Didn't see that coming. A few board folks (myself included) had him on UK's radar when Cal departed.

Any health issues or is he just chilling with his millions into the golden years

I think he is wanting to run for the senate in Alabama

There goes Auburn basketball! I was very vocal about wanting Pearl as HC here. I’d think he would have had more shelf life here but glad we dodged having his son take over someday!

there is absolutely 0% chance UK would ever allow his son to coach here. I’m always amazed at how many people seem to have no understanding of how a program like UK basketball or Bama door all operates. The same thing when people would say “let’s get Payne when Cal hangs up”. Zero chance of anything like that happening here.

I used to argue people on the Payne front all the time. It’s just amazing how many think UK would actually hire someone like that at UK. And Pearl was never going to coach here for numerous reasons. 1. Barnhart would never hire him and he’s not good enough to deal with what he brings. 2. He wouldn’t have let Auburn because they promised his son could take over and we wouldn’t ever dream of doing something that insane.

all 0% chance nonsense. Pearl Jr wouldn’t even be considered as an assistant here. It’s highly likely had Pearl ever came here its son wouldn’t have been part of that deal.

Also if UK hired him last year do yall think he leaves for politics??

I don’t believe for a second he was even an option. Auburn had been guaranteeing him his son could take over when he was done. Kentucky would never offer something like that. Pearl knew he wasn’t going to coach into his 70’s so his last chance to coach UK would have been 5 years ago with his contract renewal. But there’s no way Barnhart and UK would pull that trigger.

Wow, surprise good coach, not sure how his son will be.

highly doubtful it works long term. Auburn is just willing to give it a shot because they really don’t have options.

this will probably go how it usually does. Over the next 3/4 years once Steven stumbles a little he’ll lose his footing and they’ll go back like they all do. Florida is the only one in the SECA who was able to keep up after success. The list is long with the ones who didn’t.

I think he just wanted his son to get a chance. He gave him a solid team for him to start with. I will miss the dude as he was a cool coach. Sucks because he had a team of all time for him last year and just missed on a title.

The KSR story says, "a 30-day transfer portal window will open for Auburn on Tuesday."

Technically they could lose their entire roster, although I'm sure the Pearls ensured all (most) players are on board in advance of this announcement. At least you would think so.
Too bad it didn't happen a couple months ago. I'd have loved a shot to get Pettiford.

Always appreciated his passion.

I know a lot of folks don't care for him, but he is the classic case of hate him on the other side but if he was our coach we'd love him something fierce.

It is very interesting to me that he is retiring when he has Auburn right in the hunt for FFs and titles. Maybe that's why he's leaving. Go out on a high note, leave a good situation for his son. I can respect that.

Not sure why you'd leave elite D1 sports for politics but maybe we need more ball coaches in higher offices. Natural leaders of men. Specifically young men.

Scumbag move. Ensures that players are screwed and stuck player for a coach that they didn’t commit to, and forces Auburn into a nepo hire for an undeserving coach.
This is Pearl we are talking about here. I would characterize it as unsurprising and in character.

Very surprising. I guess after not getting it done with his best team last year he realizes it’s not gonna happen. Hopefully that’s it and not health. I always liked Bruce. Never looked at him as a cheater just because he cooked a couple burgers with a recruit.
Cheating is not what got BP fired. It was his lying about grilling hamburgers. If he had been open and honest he would have gotten a slap on his wrist instead of 3 years of show cause.

In this case I would be ok with allowing the players to transfer if they wanted to. Also be able to transfer and keep all their promised NIL. I would be upset if my son committed to him and he left a month before the season starts.
Players will have a 30 day window to enter portal. Problem begins when the players want to transfer but only schools that are still on quarters have not started fall quarter. Non of the players could come here because our semester has started and players would not be eligible to play this year. Bruce's timing was good for his son because where can the Auburn player go play. UCLA is on quarters so that could be an option.

Pearl is a bad guy, a nephew of mine was doing an internship in UT Athletics Dept while he was there. A real scumbag of a person, loved to hit on 18 and 19 uear old Coeds amoing MANY other things. He will fit right in in DC
He’s an effing snake for sure. Deion Clark/Jimmy Collins Google search will prove that. But I’ll say this, that MFer could coach. I can’t stand him. Would’ve been devastated had he gotten the UK job (he wanted it badly), but the man can coach.

Sweaty Bruce has a long, checkered past that goes back to his days as an Iowa assistant. The "cookout" was about lying through his teeth to the NCAA and encouraging the recruit and his parents to lie about it.

If he is indeed leaving to go into politics, that should be a seamless transition for a sleazebag like Pearl.

I know some people that allegedly know him. He’s one of the most unethical pos in any sport. The guy really shouldn’t have been allowed around a university. But Auburn is Auburn and UT is UT. The places he coached tell you all you need to know about his behavior. Auburn and Tennessee are 1A and 1B examples of absolute corruption. There’s a reason nowhere with a shred of dignity ever looked his way. When Kansas wouldn’t hire you, and I don’t think they would, you’re bad.

Pearl has the worst reputation in all of college athletics according to guys that know. I know of an alleged story that happened while at UT that would have gotten any coach fired at most universities. But like I said, it’s Auburn and UT. They are the absolute worst of the worst.

And Bruce has quite the reputation at certain clubs.

all imo.
