I am trying to wrap my head around this whole Bruce Pearl stuff with Illinois. This is before my time so I need some input. I think the whole tape recording thing is BS, and isn't that against the law without consent in Illinois? Illinois fans seem to think they were railroaded, but were there violations found or was this a witch hunt?

False news... Trump was not involved or vindicated.

It was legal in Iowa, where he taped the conversation. Didn't matter; the NCAA didn't nail Illinois for that, but for multiple other violations that were committed that most likely would have been eventually discovered by the NCAA. But it is why Bruce is Darth Vader to Illinois fans...

So the anger comes from valid violations that started with a false claim? So, you made me get caught situation?

Thank you. I am interested in the inadmissible sentence. Was it proven that he was offered cash and a truck?
Well my wife went there during the Butks/Garbowski era and told me that lots of the players then drove some very nice autos. In fact she was Grabowski's girlfriend, now wife's roommate and get this the girlfriend also was on a free ride.

No, it was not priven. They nailed the Illini on other violations, which the Illini chose not to appeal.

When Bruce Pearl was at Milwaukee and Jimmy Collins was the HC at UIC, their postgame non-handshakes were a bit entertaining for the rest of the conference.

So, if the Deon Thomas stuff was false, they would have been vindicated. Yet when they were digging they found violations?

Yup, including violations by the very same recruiter. And I don't know if the Thomas stuff was proven false; it appears merely that the NCAA had insufficient evidence to support the claims.

Who was the IL HC at the time? Was it Henson? Has not known him to be ....

Yup Henson, But it was his assistant, Jimmy Collins, who was alleged to be the source of the Thomas violations alleged by the NCAA (and was later found at fault not for that, but for unrelated recruiting violations).

Thank you, this was a great summary. I guess where there's smoke there's fire.

That all being said, he’s a really good coach. I can’t stand him, but he’s succeeded everywhere he’s been. I wouldn’t want to have to root for him, but he gets results.

I will say this about Bruce Pearl, he handled that loss as well as anyone I've seen after a painful and controversial loss on the biggest stage. That taught his players a valuable lesson I hope they can take with them into life after basketball.

Does anyone think Underwood would have handled the same way?
