Its actually crazy this guy is somehow still a coach. Sure chin may drink but at least he recruits from time to time. In Flints whole tenure here i cant think of one lead recruit hes landed nor his prowess as an X and Os guy. Joel justice (who also is terrible) at least was hired to land bam. Bruiser just sits there and chews bubble gum as hard as possible. He should easily hit the bricks and hire tyler ulis as the assistant, you can actually see tyler help on the sidelines and is probably able to relate to the college kids and help them see things on a level of familarness. Tyler as well obviously knows offense and can help PGs see the floor better and coach them up on how to be a true floor general. Bruiser is getting paid to be cals buddy. He adds absolutely nothing and is being paid handsomely for it. How barnhart didnt demand his dismissal shows he truly doesnt know nor care about basketball.

Tyler Ulis has done nothing to deserve an assistant gig at uk. Not yet anyway

Hes done more than Bruiser and thats the only reason i mentioned him bc you can actually see him trying to work. Bruiser is never in the picture and Cal isnt going to hire anyone outside of his bubble anyways. Its crazy BF gets paid to do, in my eyes, absolutely nothing.

He’s Cals rubber stamp. He’s the guy he’s bouncing ideas around with from game to game but bruiser just plays the yes man role. Cal needs a Larry brown type someone who knows more about the game than cal. Robic another example. It doesn’t matter though. Cal is a Jim boeheim type at a place where he had a chance to really have a legacy. He’s wasted 4-5 some may argue many more years. Definitely lots of talent wasted with only 1 title. I guess if you’re cal at this point and it’s a one shot deal might as well stay with consistency for the 1 year run.

John is super loyal to his guys.

I've just always figured Flint had serious dirt on John from the 7 or so years they spent together at UMass.🤷

The fact that he is still going to be on the bench for a fifth year is a serious head scratcher considering the last 4 years together (he and John) they have been amazingly bad together.

The fact that nobody is reaching out to hire Bruiser as a head coach (this day and age) with his experience also raises eyebrows.

A) his coaching tree is trash
B) nobody would ever ask bruiser to be a HC after KP and orlandos attempts. Nobody will ever ask anyone in his tree again hence which, and i hate to say, jai lucas made a good lateral move

How do you guys go about getting all this behind-the-scenes intel? All I ever notice is seeing assistant coaches on the bench during time outs. Can't really glean much from that. At least I can't. Somehow other posters know about each coach's work ethic, how much they contribute in practice and with in-game instruction, and how much time they put in. It's like you're so in touch with the program you could give them their annual performance review. I want that kind of access.

I don't think any of them are doing much to improve the program, but to be fair, they are probably saddled with a no win situation

You really don't know anything at all, do you? I'm not saying we keep Bruiser, but this isn't a very smart post.

I was surprised that Ulis or someone didnt coach Dillingham to be more poised with the ball instead of freaking out like red ants just ran up his leg every time he touched it.

Justus got a lot of **** while he was here too. He was actually a fine assistant, recruited guys pretty well, they weren’t always the top 5 stars but I think you need some of the not sure fire one and done guys. Somehow in the last 5 years we’ve resorted to blaming assistants when the real problem just stay consistent.

Tbf, Ulis is a GA and has a better than average resume to sit in a GA seat.

Those typically go to guys like Brad Cal or some other end of the bench guy, lower division college players that go get their masters at a D1 university, or even guys that were good highschool players but never played college ball and want to get into coaching.

Tyler is an SEC player of the year and played at the highest level…that doesn’t automatically make you a better coach or more knowledgeable than someone who didn’t play at that level (despite what this new gen of dudes like JJ Redick, draymond green, and Kendrick Perkins want to
Spew about commentators and coaches; some of the best coaches of all time didn’t play in college or played at a very low level. Even Mike McDaniel modern day made it to a top NFL mind as a ball boy)….but from qualifying for an entry level coaching position it’s a huge resume builder.

Responding to the Chin remark in OP:

Who cares if people drink? As long as they aren't BCG drunks making fools of themselves in either the Lexington area public or worse coming to work hungover or drunk, I don't care what people do in their personal lives of imbibement. And if they are alcoholics, it's an addiction disease, not a character flaw.

That's one thing that bugs me every time I go home to KY to visit family each year - cracking a beer on vacation at 1 in the afternoon on a Saturday always gets funny looks. People still gossip about the "town drunk", but the "town drunk" just went to the bar every Friday night and did nothing beyond that to "earn" the title. I don't get it about our southern families placing some stigma on alcohol like it's a character flaw.

If it doesn't affect his coaching or relationship with the kids, don't bring up someone's personal life habits.

It’s Mark Fox season now baby! No more buddy hire Bryiser Flint types. Just legendary coaches like Fox who turned around Georgia and Cal.

I don't mind having Fox around. As I said in another thread, he's not elite but is in that "above average" territory. No one can win at Cal right now with their athletic program the way it is. They are going to get annihilated even worse in the ACC next year (which feels weird to even conceptualize).

Flint is notorious around the scene as a pos and a leech. Many high school / AAU coaches all the way up know him to be one of the biggest con men associated with basketball. It’s always been a mystery why Calipari loves the guy so much but it no doubt goes back to his UMASS days. It’s likely Bruiser knows a lot about Calipari’s early dirt and Calipari wants to keep him close and not make waves. Flint is a pretty bad guy all things considered. I was livid when he was brought in and still hate that he ever put the UK coaches hat on.

Luckily enough for us he’s Arkansas problem now. Whats the deal with him being brought up?

They aren't ditching Cal as much as they dont want to go to Arkansas.
Tyler has a really high basketball IQ, and ran our offense way better than Cal ever did. I can see him being a D1 coach someday. He just needs to get away from Cal.
