There is a guy who posts from a collection of Polaroid photos he has, mostly 50’s to 70’s.

Anyone else wish they could get into a Time Machine?
I admired Roberto like no other athlete in my lifetime. I was there the day he got his 3,000th hit. I cried when I heard the news of his plane crash while delivering relief supplies to earthquake victims In Nicaragua. Some athletes give their time and money to charity. Roberto gave his life. Rest in Peace.

As strange as this sounds, I think Clemente largely goes underrated, especially with the younger crowd, in the conversation with the all time greats. His numbers are unbelievable. 3000 career hits. .317 batting average. 12 Gold Gloves, 12 time All-Star, 4 NL batting titles, MLB MVP in 1966, WS MVP in 1971. I guess I’m guilty of ignorance of his greatness at some point also as I never had the privilege of seeing him play. My oldest son, who is a lover of both baseball and history, has a plaque on his wall honoring Roberto with these achievements. The first time I read it my jaw dropped. Coincidentally, when my son was still playing baseball in his high school years he wore #21 in honor of Roberto.

Here is one I took from my seats a couple years back. Some context. Lakeland is a decent drive to Clearwater. Every time I went to the yard when the Phillies were playing the Tigers, I was positive that Miggy would never get on the bus to make that trip. But he ALWAYS did. Never sure why but I wondered if it was simply for people coming to FL to have the opportunity to see him play.

Compare and contrast to the great Mariano. I started thinking one time that I couldn’t remember the last time I saw Mariano in Clearwater. So, one day I finally asked. Mind you it’s a half hour from Tampa to Clearwater. I was told that when Mariano reported each year for Spring Training, he requested and was granted that he not receive a road uniform. Mariano would only play in Tampa. I believe the same for Jeter. The Yankees would play 2-3 times a year in Clearwater and for the last 10 years or so of his career, I never remember him in Clearwater.

One week till first game.
