Anyone old enough to remember this from 1987?

Synopsis: Pennsylvania State Treasurer, R. Budd Dwyer was convicted of taking bribes, and looked as though he might spend the rest of his life in jail. A day or so before sentencing he calls a press conference where the general consensus was the man would resign. However, he reads a lengthy statement maintaining his innocence, warns anyone who might not be able to handle it to leave the room, then pulls a gun, sticks it in his mouth and pulls the trigger in front of reporters, and their cameras.

What I can't get over is the fact several news stations actually aired the guy committing suicide, completely unedited with no warning to viewers. When I first read about this it talked about how a bad snow storm had hit Pennsylvania and thousands upon thousands of kids were out of school and saw the video during the noon news. I would be PISSED if I were a parent. The footage is actually is still on YouTube, but I'm not going to link it. Feel free to do a search if you're so inclined. I saw it a few years ago, and I can say it is truly disturbing, and this is coming from a Murse who has worked plenty of codes, traumas, and suicides.

The worst part is after the fact the key witness in the case against him recanted and admitted to lying under oath in an effort to get a shorter sentence.

I wasnt very old at the time, but when I first heard of this a few years ago, I couldn't believe how I had no recollection of it. It's almost as if time forgot the whole thing. If a similar scenario played out today I could NOT imagine how it would be with our 24 hour news cycle. I would assume a significant amount of people would be desensitized to it.

But does anyone actually remember this? It's just one of the most screwed up things I could imagine.

Saw it on YouTube about 8 years ago. Super disturbing and it's forever burned into my mind.

I've never heard of this before. There's a scene in the first season finale of Mr. Robot that is very similar to this. I wonder if that's where the idea came from. Even as an adult, I don't think that's something I would be able to handle watching.

I saw it because of an article a few years ago and wish I hadn't. I remember when it happened but they didn't show it here in Ky. National news reported it but that was about it here.
Anyone contemplating offing themselves this way should see it. It's a nasty mess. It makes pills look like a more attractive option.

Sounds a bit dramatic.

Have you ever seen someone stick a gun in their mouth and kill themself? It makes an impression on you.

I must be more sheltered than your rock and roll lifestyle of seeing people off themselves on national television.

Old enough but if I saw it at the time I've forgotten it. Nothing something you would want to remember either.

Back then TV stations didn't have some of the options they do today either. If it was live they most likely couldn't shut it off fast enough to avoid you seeing it. If they replayed it then all bets are off but today everything runs with a delay just for reasons such as that allowing stations a chance to stop live viewers from seeing/hearing things.

The Aracau Indians in southern Chile killed their captured enemies by very slowly , millimeters at a time, lowering them onto a sharpened stake with the pointy end centered on the rectum of the very unlucky prisoner. The Spanierds did not conquer this tribe for a long time.
A gunshot to the head or even a beheading would be more merciful than impalement.

That's the thing, it wasn't shown live. The suicide happened in the morning but the video was broadcast during the mid-day news. Why those programming directors didn't stop to think that through is beyond me.

Saw on on YouTube randomly...think I started the night watching videos of bullmastiffs and ended up on the weird part of the internet. Also saw the Bjork stalker suicide and a story about a female news reporter who killed herself live on the air

Not saying those of you bothered are pussies. But stuff like that just has never bothered me. Just varying personalities I guess?

The female reporter was named Christine Chubbuck. Apparently the footage of that incident has been missing for years, although some claimed to've seen it. There's a new documentary (and a separate, fictional film) out about the case and the hunt for the original footage.

Maybe if wildcatboston84 is gracious enough to share his Netflix account with us maybe we can see it. I hope he has warned his dad that next flux is raising their prices so his dad may have to get a second job lol

Cameraman is to be commended. A lesser professional would have panned down to show that he had pissed himself. Showed restraint under pressure. Kudos.

Was on faces of death years ago. Something I wish I hadn't seen.

While true, it was 1987. Our society (especially kids) hadn't yet been completely coddled into the helpless blob that it is today.

Perhaps an urban legend of sorts, but seems like I read that Dwyer was found innocent of the charges. After the fact of course.

That's what I referred to in the original post. The key witness against him admitted to lying in an effort to save their own neck.

Remember seeing it on MYSPACE years and years ago. I didn't even know they had videos and I accidentally ran into it. One of the most disturbing things I had ever seen in my life.

Reading is indeed our friend, Natron.

While I've watched the Dwyer video before, some of that mess out there is wacked. Worst I saw was that bunch of Mexicans who beat the young girl to death, and burned her alive. Oh, and the Russian pilot literally getting his head sawed off with a jagged edge of a Rambo knife or some ****.

F*ck that noise.

Ranking right up there with ole Bud is the lady who walks in front of the train in Illinois, mid to late 80's I believe. For some dumb *** reason I had the "Banned from tv" VHS which included both

Yesterday was the first time I had heard about this so I watched it last night. Not nearly as disgusting as I thought it would be. Lot's of blood but other than that, it looked like it was out of a "B" movie.

It's disturbing to see. What sucks is that they found out weeks later that he was never actually guilty of the stuff he was charged with. Very, very sad.

It's been a few years, but the video of the guy, seemed to be a mentally disturbed and/or homeless, who walked into some martial arts academy and challenged a guy to spar, and the guy dropped his knee several times on the head of the homeless guy after he was down and smashed his skull. The guy was struggling to gasp his last breaths as they dragged him by the legs out the back door, leaving a trail of blood across the floor. That one stuck with me.

If watching someone take their own life doesn't bother you then there isn't much hope for you as a human. I watched the Dwyer suicide, on accident, when I was really young and it screwed me up for several days.

I'm sure something like that would have bothered me as a child, but not so much now. Life has a way of making people jaded and desensitized to things. I can't handle watching the really gory stuff like be-headings, and stuff like that...that's just too much gore for me.

Ludicrous..... I just don't let bad things get me all bent out of shape.

- Budd Dwyer was not convicted based upon false testimony, or rather the guy didn't admit that he did. He said that he lied during his OWN trial when he said that he didn't bribe officials. He then gave truthful (or at least as far as we know) testimony in the Dwyer trial in order to get a reduced sentence

- The homeless guy in the dojo didn't die. Even though the beating is gross

- I refuse to watch the Bjork stalker stuff. I've seen "worse", but the description just makes it seem so creepy that I couldn't look at strangers the same way ever again

Out of morbid curiosity I watched the Bjork stalker off himself. I guess it was real but it sure looked fake. Dude puts a pistol in his mouth, pulls the trigger, and no splatter? I've seen the Dwyer vid and deer lowered that's a lot a blood.
