Took the next few days off to Ski after the giant snow storm the Northeast got. Packed a bottle of Knob Creek to fill the flask with. Nothing like a few nips riding up the chairlift.

I get it,I really do but at some social gatherings mixed drinks are necessary,in those cases what do folks use as the go to bourbon?
Just having fun with you, brother. Most people I know that mix use sprite or coke. But, all my bourbon purist friends can't stand it. Lol.

Drink it how you like it..

That said, you should leave the coca-cola for Jack Daniels. If you like Bourbon, you can still mix it, but it really lends itself to more unique cocktails than just a "Whiskey and coke".

Old Fashioned
Manhattan
Brown Derby
Mint Julep
Whiskey Sour to name the big ones. Each has like 10 variants.

Yeah I know all in good fun but what I am asking is there a particular bourbon you use for mixing? I'm not going to mix Angels Envy, Blantons,or Basil Hayden with anything.

Jim Beam, Old Fitz or Early Times. Cheap but not Kentucky Tavern or Rebel Yell cheap.

Buffalo Trace is the best to mix in my opinion. Won't cost you an arm and a leg either.

Recently enjoying some E.H. Taylor or Elmer T. Lee. If you can find it, pick it up. Elijah Craig barrel proof is excellent also.

My former go-to was always Elijah Craig 12 year. But now that it isn't 12 years old, I've moved on. Knob Creek Single Barrel at 120 proof is probably one of the best bourbons on the market right now dollar-for-dollar- particularly if you find a good private barrel pick of it.

For the original question, Buffalo Trace > Woodford all day, every day. Then again, I don't care for WR much at all, so I'll take most decent bourbons over WR anyway (even Old Forester, also from B-F).

I tend to think Buffalo Trace has the widest range of good bourbons available, but Heaven Hill makes the best value bourbons, for the most part. The 6 year Heaven Hill Bottled in Bond is available only in a few states, and is about $13. It's excellent. Larceny for a wheater ($25ish) is solid, and McKenna 10 Year bottled in Bond (about $30) for an aged bonded bourbon is just a ridiculous price point.

That is the nastiest stuff I've ever put in my mouth.
To each his own but this was in response to a good mixing bourbon. The reviews are more than positive by the experts. Just a matter of different tastes though. For mixing it's quite good IMO.

I would choose a mixing bourbon from:
VOB
Old Grand Dad
Ancient Age
Jim Beam
Wild Turkey
Four Roses (yellow label)
Old Forester
In the end, if you're going to mix it, it really doesn't matter. Buy something on the bottom shelf, especially if you have friends that are lushes. If you want to occasionally be able to drInk it on the rocks, or don't want to be an obvious poor, buy one of WT, FR, or OF. I like Forester. Some like 100 proof for mixing, I like the lower 80ish because you don't need as much mixer to get the proportions I prefer.

Angels Envy is pure swamp piss. Just shows how everyones taste buds are different. If someone left me a truckload of it in their will, I'd contest the will. Love Eagle Rare and Four Roses Single Barrel and Blantons..Noah's Mill was mentioned above and that is great stuff. Some great ones out there.

W.L. Weller Special Reserve, if you can find it at Kroger, it is $30 for a 1.75. Great price for a good bourbon. I really enjoy it, but they can't get enough and can't keep in stock.

I also like Angel's Envy. I really like the Woodford Double Oak.

...which you've never tasted.

UKO is clueless about bourbon, clearly.

Their initial batch was. I have an unopened reserve I got from the owners that I am going to pop in a couple of years.
Gave it a go the one time and still have most of the bottle sitting on the shelf. I wanted to like it, it just tasted a bit weak, if that makes sense. The notes were there, just not enough. But it was a relatively inexpensive bottle, so no real harm done. Bottle still looks nice enough on the shelf.

Bottles you don't love are actually kinda necessary for bar decoration...

...at least if you have an issue of destroying your supply, as I do. :flushed:
