Vic violated work place policy. In spite of it being football, certain words and phrases can't be use.
You can still win at football without telling someone he is retarded for making a mistake. You can still be tough, instructive, and extract discipline from all without all the crap language people use.

If that is the standard we need to get rid of Huggs, Cary, NIB, Mazey and pretty much every other coach in America.

I do wonder though if the preponderance of the accusation is greater than the result. Not that it matters, but I wonder if the player truly was offended as well as whether he received similar language in high school or uses it at others (hypocrisy).

I believe you Dave but no one has complained (at least publicly on face book, twitter, etc. about his language, treatment). They've only complained about his drinking which indeed got him fired, in part.
All of his players laugh about it. They wear it as a badge. Of course most of them are grown *** men and not little daisies.
Martin complained about being told to go to class and team meetings as well. Kerry Martin will be a cancer on this team now.
But truthfully everyone knew Vic would be gone. No way he could have stayed and coached Martin. What would have happened when a better player beat him out. Heck you still have to assume if Martin gets beat out will he call that coach a racist or bias as well.
One thing I hope people do not do, they probably already are, posting on his twitter account and attacking him.
I suspect, from what Hugg's players say about his love for them that what is said to them is acceptable to them not rising to the level of complaining about it. So yes, I'd agree, getting yelled at by a guy historically known as what Huggins is, is viewed as something to value and even talk about years later. Huggins likely is in better control of himself compared to someone like Bobby Knight who went way off the chart for so long. I am certainly not saying what Vic did compares equally to Bobby Knight. Just saying.
I agree. But him complaining about going to class does not compare to any complain related to pejorative statements.
These are kids and the football field and what goes on the sidelines is a class room too hopefully preparing them for life outside of football.

This Vic deal is just an embarrassment. Just a lazy kid complaining because his coach made him work.
we will survive this. How the university and coaches shape the conversation from here on out will determine if this was successful in improving the program, student athletes, and recruiting. Not having a football season could help because time heals most wounds.
Koenning allegedly called Martin "retarded" during practice, and there is a rumor floating around that Koenning discouraged Martin from becoming a Muslim, but that's all that I've heard about the subject.
Did Vic handle the situation perfectly. No. But unless there is a signed document by him admitting to a lot worse than some foul language and talking about Jesus then Lyons and Gee need to go. Period.

They really should. Coaching at the highest level leaves little time to educate oneself on other issues to the extent that an informed opinion can be expressed.

The retard remark was uncalled for, but many on this board use it often and I have called them out for it...that being said, that is not a cause for termination...unless he repeatedly used the term after being called out for it. As far as religion goes, that is part of all college programs. The FCA is a big part of WVU athletics...and has been for years.
That being said, there are issues within WVU's athletic department that was brought to life a couple of weeks before KM text went out...I think they are related to each other as they share the same concerns. VK was the sacrificial lamb and I would assume there will be some other personnel movement within the AD in the future...

That sounds like pretty much the main issue. I guess he must have tried to discourage him when he was taking food to him and his mother.

In today's world, it is perfectly acceptable for a leftist college professor to espouse his/her religion to a class of captured young adults (and it IS a religion) with no repercussions. However, someone from the right who does the same can be shamed or publicly fired for espousing his/her views.
What college should be is a place where each side should be able to give their views of the world, life, etc. Let the consumer (the kid) make up his/her mind AFTER teaching them how to distinguish the legitimate argument from the fluff. It doesn't matter if its a classroom on the 3rd floor of the ADMIN building or the training room.
We need opposing views. We need generations who have opposing views and are able to come together to do what is right. Instead, we have a couple of generations now who don't have these views and skills. As the saying goes, when the only tool one has is a hammer, he tends to see everything as a nail.

We have to admit that it did cost him his job...but WVU did not care about it when they rehired him. He has been great for WVU and this will pass...he has a team of liberals around him making these decisions now...with enrollment down, WVU has to appeal to the out of state east coast liberals...that's all this is really about.
