  1. Center plays at top of key and initiates offense/sets screens. Khalifa, who is in portal, an also shoots 3’s. Z would be perfect combo. Ugo not so much
  2. All 5 on offense crash boards and can handle the ball
  3. Constant movement of all 5 players creating havoc on opponent’s defense
  4. Many picks and back cuts per possession - will be a new concept for us fans to get used to seeing
  5. Robinson, who was Big 12’s 6th man of the year, is very talented but never met a shot he did not like
  6. Will run off a defensive rebound
  7. Pope does not get on officials like “Ellen’s roommate” did. Will speak to them but not rant and stomp
  8. Seems that all 5 players on the floor have green light to shoot 3’s
  9. Hustle and more hustle - I got tired just watching them
  10. Plays similar to Bama with 3’s and layups. More player and ball movement than Bama
  11. Played 10 players significant minutes
  12. Defense average but rebound effectively. No full court pressure and all man-to-man this game

Pope played for Pitino but definitely has his own coaching style.
Pitino was defensive pressure oftentimes full court. Used depth to pressure all game and wear out opponent.
Pope uses constant movement on offensive end and depth. If the opponent does not have 7-8 players, they are going to be dragging late in 2nd half.

-If you are not a decent shooter, you can’t play for Pope

-All players will be handling the ball

-You better have a so called “high motor” - no resting or purposely using the shot clock

-High paced and high energy players required

  • Khalifa could start, Robinson off bench ( a less talented Dillingham) great one minute and what are you doing the next. Hall the PG is hustle unlimited and see him as backup 1 and 2 guard
Plan on watching more games this offseason

Khalifa has been described by several on this board as painfully slow. How does he fit into popes system if that is the case especially as a starter?

I just watched one game. He is slow, but functions as a point center. Shot 3 well against Baylor and good passer. Stayed at top of key most of the game only saw him post one time. Big body with little vertical. I would classify him as a heady player. No outstanding skills but spreads the floor. Dilly would have been All American in this offense.

I watched the BYU vs Iowa St game and agree with your assessment. Instead of using defense to wear teams down, they make you chase them all over the court constantly while on offense to wear you out. It's anything but boring to watch.

Watch the Kansas game (YouTube). They went into Kansas ranked #7 and broke their great winning streak. Best coached team. Inferior talent but some of the best coaching I've seen. He won't need superior talent to win. Just the right talent. More fun than Bama.

Watched only 2 games and Khalifa was bad. In both, the first rd loss to Duquense and the win over KU he combined for 1 fg and 4 rebs. I definitely do not think he is starter material, especially at Kentucky.

Are they so active on offense that they seem to “rest” on defense ?? Is their energy level just as high on the defensive end ?? If so, I like what I’m hearing.
I'm the KSR video I watched, they seem to trap and funnel the ball for an easy block, but they get back QUICKLY the other way, often launching 3's before the opponent can get positioned. It's going to be A LOT of watching his teams. None of this stand at the top of the key and dribble the air out of the ball crap, or setting half-*** screens.

Once Pope starts recruiting for that position, I would agree with you. But next year Khalifa will have the advantage of having played in the system and that would be valuable. Z is tailor made for this role. Don’t see a big low post type of player thriving in this style of offense.

They seemed to be flying around and hustling on defense. Baylor had so many good/great offensive players that could simply beat the BYU guys off the dribble. It was easy to see that Baylor had superior talent, yet BYU won the game!

I agree with all of that ^^^^ except for the last sentence. On the contrary, Pope’s offense is IDEAL for a strong post player.

It’s mostly a 5 out offense with a 3-point shooting center who is a good passer playing on the perimeter…but it can morph into 4 out-1 in if you have a good post player. The floor is so spread out in this offense and with 4 shooters on the perimeter…the defense has to make a choice: double down/dig down on the post & give up an open kick-out 3 to a good shooter or play iso defense on the post. Thriving is exactly what a good post player can do in this offense…if you have the right guy. Ideally, he has great post moves & can pass well out of the post.

It can start out as 4 out-1 in or you start in 5 out then post up once the floor is really spread out or if you get a mismatch on a switch.

Did not think of that occurring in Pope's offense. He may not have posted his centers because he did not have a good post player. Good analysis!

Did they play Baylor twice? The game I watched showed a mix of zones with man.
That's good, because the two games I watched them, it was only man. Which is hard to do with 4 slow guys on defense. But they fought hard.

His centers will need to be good passers and catchers..ie, good hands. The ball will keep moving. It dies when it hits a big guy's hands of stone. Classic Pitino. Look at his bigs here.
