I thought this deserved its own thread but his shooting has just regressed so badly it to me is inexplicable as even witnessed by his foul shooting; I mean he didn't even come close on his last two foul shots and he was a great foul shooter his first two years
What I don't understand is we have all these guards that are coaches, don't they work with the players look at film etc and see what may have changed because we really need him to come out of his funk most not all of his shots were wide open shots that we need him to knock down not have air balls of which he had 3 last night

Caleb’s defense is what is keeping him in the line up. He gave #2 fits in the second half when we were making our run.

Fonseca linked this compilation of Caleb guarding #2 in his article this morning. His defensive impact is really clear when watching the plays back to back

What did Yogi say? Half of the game is 90% mental.

It's ALL mental with Caleb right now, as evidence by him yakking two FTs last night. He just needs some confidence.

This is the same McConnell from last year he was our least efficient non-big offensive player for the last two years

Caleb does a ton of things well. Unfortunately, the most visible, shooting, he does not. He needs to be reigned in on offense, but allowed to do what he does elsewhere. He should average less than 1 3-pt attempt per game, and probably less than 5 total shots.

Yes, good way to put it. He needs to be reigned in on O until he shows that he can make a shot.

I still think it might all be due to his previous back problem. If you have a bad back, the degree of how much it may debilitate you can vary minute to minute, day to day, etc. If it's his back, it could explain the shooting percentage regression that he's experienced every single season so far, and it could explain the sometimes puzzling results of some of his shots... You start a movement and suddenly your back won't do its part to complete the movement properly... From potential swish to brick/airball in a fraction of a second...

Since his back problem was bad enough that he temporarily chose to redshirt to rehab it, then it might be a chronic problem that no amount of medical care is going to make perfect, especially with the type of repetitive trauma and stress to the area that typical basketball movements cause. More trauma to the area usually results in more inflammation, stiffness, and pain. His back may have absolutely nothing to do with his shooting problems, but it also could explain everything too.

Funny the hypocrisy. People say we are a bad free throw shooting team because we can’t shoot. Well Caleb led the team in Free Throw percentage last year and is one of our beat defenders and now people want him on the bench. Can’t decide

Schrödinger's back? It's hurt and healthy at the same time?

Hmmm. I never considered that, LOL. (Please don't tell anyone, but I had to look that up.) Seriously though, I don't know if he still has any back problems or not, but if he does, it could definitely help explain some things regarding his ability on the court.

Didn’t Caleb grow several inches from when he first arrived at RU! That along with his back issues may be a contributing factor. Bottom line is that he has not been a dependable shooter. Hopefully that changes.

Caleb to me is someone who should focus in on defense ; getting dirty; driving to the basket and take 1 3 point shot a game. Problem he’s a senior now and I think he’s had it in his mind now that he has free reins to shoot. Problem is he is not an offensive threat and Coach needs to elaborate this to him and to Paul

Fair point but did you watch the game last night? He had four — FOUR! — airballs from the field, and missed his only two foul shots (badly).

He is truly struggling with his offense. He needs to be reigned in and prohibited from shooting a three except if the shot clock is running out.
