Yeah, he had a bigger body on him for a lot of the night and was taking a lot of contact, and then he got a solid drive to the basket he got called for a nonsense offensive foul. That was one of the more questionable calls of the night, along with the Omoruyi charge... both a bit uncharacteristic of a crew that was swallowing their whistle on most contact.
It's almost as if he felt he wasn't going to be able to finish through contact or get a call if he went to the rim, and if he did muscle his way in he was going to get another offensive foul. Maybe that's why he was playing a bit tentative? But that doesn't excuse not pulling the trigger from the arc even once.
Someone should tell Paul he's shooting 41% from 3 this season and explain how that's significantly BETTER than his 2-point percentage of 44% because 3's are worth more than 2's and that they need him to shoot more to win more. Frame it as he's being selfish by not shooting more.
Yeah but every game is different but Caleb’s defense is outstanding almost every game. For example , on Saturday against MSU , Caleb and Paul had 0 points at the half and Walker 9 and Hoggard 6 had 15 points. Caleb started the comeback with a nice drive against Hoggard and the foul, later hit a huge three on a high PNR pass from Paul to give us the lead 42-40 and hit another midrange and ended with 9 and of course Paul took over and scored 17. I would say that 3 to give us the lead was a crucial part of the victory. Our guards went from being outscored 15-0 at the half to out scoring MSU’s 26-21 as they only scored 6 to our 26 and why we won. Caleb played within himself and took only 1 bad shot all game.
Yesterday he didn’t drive after the first half shot and had plenty of chances and lanes to drive or get fouled but didn’t. His decision making was not great , he tried to do too much, when he does he pushes his shot instead of just shooting it and we got the 1-12.
He also hit a huge 3 in the Penn State game from a nice pass from Cam that gave us some separation after Pickett was going off.
Caleb was bad offensively , bad shooting and bad decision making. Normally we do not get all 3. As bad as he was Paul was worse.
Paul has said the coaches are always on him to shoot more. It's just not his mentality. Really wish he would pull the trigger more
Yup - but isn't that coaching? figuring out some way to get guys to understand what helps the team most despite the player's mentality.
I love stats, I'd show Paul points per possession when he shoots a 3 vs when anyone else but him or Cam/Oskar shoots a 3 as oftentimes Paul's failure to take a decent shot leads to someone else taking a worse shot and that hurts the team. Then I'd go with the team NEEDS you to shoot more so we can win more. Then I'd tell him it's selfish NOT to shoot because we end up with worse shots when he doesn't.
My guess is that the coaching staff treads lightly on Caleb shooting less since they likely told him he could shoot more if he came back.
I'm sure the staff and Paul are all aware

I think it goes back to the stories of him playing pick up ball growing up and the only way he could get on the court was to pass. That pass first second third mentality was ingrained into him from an early age and it's tough to change
Yeah Paul passes up at least 3-4 shots a game where I say "he needs to take that".
Yes way too much dribbling & one on one play. Also by Paul. Got to move the ball quickly. Can't pass only when you can't do anything. Too late then.
