Federal and local officials are set to announce a “significant development” Wednesday morning in the criminal investigation into January’s Palisades Fire, believed to be the most costly wildfire in California history.
Several media outlets, including the Los Angeles Times, are reporting that an arrest has been made.
Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Special Agent in Charge Kenny Cooper will make the announcement during a 9 a.m. news conference in Los Angeles.

Today we are announcing the arrest of 29-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht on a criminal complaint charging him with maliciously starting what became the Palisades Fire in January. The complaint alleges that Rinderknecht's started a fire in Pacific Palisades on New Year's Day -- a blaze that eventually turned into one of the most destructive fires in Los Angeles history, causing death and widespread destruction. Among the evidence that was collected from his digital devices was an image he generated on ChatGPT depicting a burning city. While we cannot undo the damage and destruction that was done, we hope his arrest and the charges against him bring some measure of justice to the victims of this horrific tragedy. Rinderknecht's initial appearance is scheduled for today at 1:30 p.m. EDT in U.S. District Court in Orlando. Rinderknecht is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
BREAKING: Feds have charged a man for the catastrophic Palisades fire. Investigators say Jonathan Rinderknecht "maliciously" lit what’s called the “Lachman” fire shortly after midnight on January 1st near Skull Rock trail in the Pacific Palisades. A “multi-agency” investigation determined that initial fire was extinguished by LAFD but “unbeknownst to anyone” it smoldered underground in roots, re-kindled and started the separate Palisades fire on January 7th that authorities say ended up destroying 6,800 buildings and killed 12 people. The investigation ruled out fireworks, lightning, cigarettes, etc. as the origin of the Lachman fire.
