I was just wondering what kind of computer setups people out here are running these days. I've been a computer technician all my adult life, and been a geek since the days of the Commodore 64. Let me kick off this thread with what I'm currently running :

Corsair White Graphic Series 760t Full tower case
(3) 120mm blue led fans with remote controlled led interior lighting mod
1000W Corsair HX1000i (Digitally Controlled Power) PSU
ASUS X99-A USB 3.1 (Intel X99 Chipset) Mobo
Intel Core i7 5930K (Six-Core) (4.1 OC) CPU
CORSAIR Hydro Series H100 Extreme Performance Liquid (closed Loop) CPU Cooler
2x SLI Dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB (Includes PhysX) Graphics Cards
32GB DDR4 2800MHz System Memory
1x SSD (500GB Samsung 850 EVO) (OS HDD)
4TB Western Digital Black edition mechanical HDD (secondary storage)
DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x)
Windows 10 Home OS

Please add your PC configuration, I would love to hear what everyone is using these days !

Made a mid-range gaming/server PC a year ago:

Coolermaster HAF 912
ASUS Z97-E 1150 MB
G.Skill 16 gig of DDR3 RAM
Intel Core i7-4790 Haswell
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
EVGA GTX 750 Ti 2GB
Rosewill Lightning-1000 PS
Cooler Master 120mm Silent Fans (x5 throughout)
Micron M500 240gig (x3 for server storage)

Again, pretty mid-range. Cost about $1,000. I only play a few select games and don't need anything crazy. It's really half project (haven't built a PC before) and half for Server 2012 and VMs

I'm more impressed with my laptop setup.

Dell E6400 Core2Duo, 4gig, 256 OCZ Vertex 2 SSD
Dell E6420 i7, 16gig, Micron M500 SSD (Primary work machine swapping out shortly)
Dell E6330U i7, 16 gig, m500 (secondary work machine, stays at home)
Dell E7450 i7, 16 gig, m500 (Ultrabook style, 3rd work machine)
Dell Precision 5510 on it's way to demo and ultimately swap out with the E6420

Also have a Lenovo X1 Carbon and T450S coming in for testing, and those will also probably find their way into my home. [winking]

Thanks for giving some input on the thread !

I know the feeling needing a new computer and having to rely on a cell phone or with an older PC... May things go well and make it so you can get a new machine ...

And thanks LineSkiCat, I really need a new laptop myself ... seeing your post makes me want to get one - and hopefully soon. I had been using nothing but laptops the past few years, that and a 2012 HP Envy h8 1414 (upgraded CPU to a 8350 Vishera, graphics toa geforce 660 and a 250GB SSD)

I still find it amazing that the HP Envy (which my mom bought me) has held up as good as it has. I've got it in the living room now as my HTPC with the large screen Samsung 60" HDTV plasma. I think it looks as good as some of the 4k HDTV's personally.

The main things I have on my wishlist would be :

1. New UHDTV (50" or larger) 4:4:4 Chroma running at 60hz ( or simply waiting it out to see if they can get out some 4k HDTV's at 120hz .... ) I'm also holding out until they can get some big UHD TV's with OLED at a much cheaper price, which I think they will do, just not sure when they'll be able to make them cheap enough for my wallet!

2. A nice new M.2 ssd with more storage capacity than the ones they have out right now (that M.2 market has been making leaps and strides over the past year, it would be sweet to get one within the next year if the capacity gets bumped up a lot more...)

3. Then I want a new laptop. I need something portable, because my cellphone is a crappy Huawei, but it gets the job done (plus, it's on my sister's account .... she's paying for me to have it because she loves me .... hehe! It's nice not to have a cell phone bill to deal with on top of everything else, ya' know what I mean?)

All in all, it's nice to have future proof equipment - or at least future proof enough for my needs.

Asus Nexus 7
1.5 GHz Quad Core Processor
16 GB of memory
3 GB of RAM
7" 1920 X 1200 Capacitive Screen
USB 2.0
Bluetooth 4.0
GPS
5 MP Rear facing camera
1.3 MP Front facing camera
Running Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Beat that. [laughing]

Seriously, I rarely use computers anymore. My laptop is a Toshiba probably 4 or 5 years old. I don't even know the specs on it anymore.

Bestbuy is having some great deals for Black Friday
A couple UHD televisions for five hundred or less
As for computers they have some of them as well.

I'm not a gamer so I just need a basic set up. I surf and shop on line some. Plus I need the word processor for some paperwork I do every month.

As long as it handles streaming video I'm good. Netflix etc

I'm not trying to give you ****... Alienware's are well made and that thing can run most games for the next 5-8 years.. But why not build it yourself? That thing is a bulky behemoth for a "laptop" almost 4x the weight of most Ultrabooks these days.. you can get the same specs for 50%-60% of the cost in a desktop.

I love building machines, you could save some serious dough if you build your own for your next machine.

Because the University of KY bought it for me (kinda, it's my grant). I used our Dell purchasing account to get a much better deal. I agree with everything you said, but under the circumstances, I'm happy. It's not mobile, it stays at home in my office.

Keep me posted with questions. My preferred is Dell, but I ran into a plethora of issues with their new Ultrabook models. I think they might have went with some cheap capacitors or something on the system board. About 30% of ours have issues. Still, I love the 7450 and 7440. The 7470 is coming out Q1 I believe.. the Precision 5510 has been revamped and should get to me in a week or two.

Laptops, IMO, should be for work, web, and multimedia. Gaming is always going to be tough. You don't want some 10+ pound monstrosity. Save the gaming for a desktop. Get an ultrabook/tablet/2-1 style laptop for productivity, music/moves, and remote access to your desktop.

Free? Say no more. I'm rocking an E6400 that's 7 years old cause it's free hahahaha. No judgement here.

As for building, give it a shot if you're interested. It's a weekend product. The hardest part is paying for it and pesky cable management. I've spend just as much time re-routing the cables as I did building it.

Wow! A room full of geeks! Question. How can i get my photos from my ipad to my hp? Any help appreciated.
Can't answer your question, because real geeks won't touch ipads/apple products. Because apple products just work. And what's the fun in that?

To answer the OP's question:
  • Typing this on my Laptop: HP Circa 2010, Win7, 17.3" screen, Core i3 M370, 4GB memory, upgraded with 240GB SSD
  • Main PC (which I use very little these days): Also circa 2010, self-built, Win7, Core i7 860, 16GB memory, 240GB SSD, GeForce GTX 460 video card, Cooler Master case and Seasonic modular PSU.
  • "Server" PC: Win7, Celeron 1037u embedded dual-core processor, 40GB SSD + 2 TB HDD, PicoPSU, Used as DLNA Server, Plex Server, FTP Server, Remote access when needed, and HTPC.
  • Windows 10 Tablet, Unbranded, 10.1" 1280X800 Screen, Z3735F CPU, 2GB memory, 32GB Internal Storage, 64 GB microSD card for external storage, picked up for about $61 over the summer, along with a docking keyboard on cleariance for $7. A little slow, but nice tablet to take anyware.
  • Various other tablets that are retired and hidden in drawers: A Huawei IDEOS S7 Slim, the original Nexus 7, a no-name 7" tablet that doesn't charge correctly, a no-name 10" tablet with a cracked screen, an 8" Windows Tablet I picked up over the summer for $40. Also a MK808B PC-on-a-Stick.
Really, unless you have some specific need such as video editing or running virtual OS's, you don't need a lot of processing power. There's nothing out there pushing that envelope. That is why the most recent generation of intel processors had an infinitesimal bump in speed from the previous generation, but a pretty big leap in power efficiency. After a certain amount of CPU power, more power won't improve your experience; but increasing efficiency=less energy used=longer lasting battery, and that's something laptop/tablet/cell phone users will appreciate.

Man, CompTIA A+ was my first cert earned in 1998. I was hardcore into desktops/servers for roughly 15 years, but those days have since passed. For me, it's now all about portability and virtual machines.

Current setups:

Some Samsung Celeron laptop with 8 GB.
Dell E6400 laptop with 4 GB
Dual-boot Dell D820 laptop with 4 GB
6 year-old Asus Netbook. Big screen and travels with me everywhere.

I created a second Facebook account and just sent them to that account by messenger and saved them. I can move photos from my phone from anywhere this way.

The object here is establish a centralized point accessible by two platforms. Sign up for a Google Mail (gmail) account and then download the free Google Drive through iTunes.

Questions for those that build their own PC's.

I'd like something to hook up to my TV through HDMI for streaming things my Roku isn't capable of/doesn't have an app for, Internet browsing, word processing, and that's basically it. Would I be able to hold something like that for $200ish and if so what would I need? I already have a wireless keyboard and an external hard drive.
