Can anyone see Joey Baker eventually starting this year?

I do think a starting five will eventually separate. So far, Tre, Stanley and Carey have started every game. I think Hurt is going to eventually start every game, maybe even starting with Cal. That leaves O'Connell, Goldwire and Baker fighting for that last spot. I'm proud of Joey for possibly just being in the conversation. On a side note, Stanley clearly struggled on offense but notice how he did well in other areas when his offense was struggling. That takes maturity in my opinion.

No, but if he keeps hitting threes and can be somewhat solid on D (biggest question mark) he should get minutes. A lot of things change when conference play starts.

I thought Joey was a sure transfer because of his body language and facial expressions just a couple of games back. Has he smiled and given a couple of high fives or somethnig? OFC

If Tre improves his shooting and become a consistent scorer without forcing it, it greatly reduces the need to insert Joey or Alex into the starting lineup. If Tre shoots like last year most nights, we have to have another shooter in the starting lineup. We probably need at least 2 guys to emerge as consistently good shooters. After that, we need 2 more to at least be competent from 3. We can't afford to have Tre, Jack, and Alex to be as poor and or as inconsistent as last year.

No. Baker is a three point shooter with limited defensive skills at this moment. I think it’s Alex to loose at this point. As Conference play begins I look for K to drop from the nine to ten man rotation down to his usual eight.

Right now outside of Stanley and Tre no one has really separated their self from others except Carey and really Carey is in the best situation to play because Javin hasn’t made big adjustments from last season.

If Moore could stop forcing on offense and be more confident I could see him start over Alex for his defense.

I don't think Joey is a possible starter this year. He's going to be a three point specialist who will see time when we need points or when Alex and Tre are shooting poorly. I sure do hope he gets minutes though. I do think he adds some nice energy on the floor.

Agreed on comments about Javin. There is a lot of season left, but I don't think we have seen him progress from last year, and I don't think we have seen the high energy/high motor guy that we need gobbling up rebounds on both ends and cleaning up some garbage points. I do believe he we come around by ACC play.

The bottom line is I, in no way, want to see Moore and Stanley together on the floor is just for defensive purposes. our best lineups will consist of Joey/Alex rotating and Stanley/ Moore rotating. That way we have a good shooter on the floor at all time and we also have someone that can get to the rim also.

I don't think Joey is ready (mainly because of his "D"), but I sure wouldn't say he never will. Right now things seem to be situational, mainly because there are a few players still trying to find their game, and where they fit in.
This is by no means a bad thing, and actually I am looking forward to watching it all fall into place!

Go Duke!

I'm happy to see him in the rotation,15-20 minutes per game,as long as his defence is not a detriment.Starting minutes may not come till his senior year.

If Joey is starting this year, than unfortunately that means Alex is slumping or just playing bad. And we really need Alex's shooting.

Both Alex and Joey can shoot..but Alex (at this time) is a better defender and plays with a lot more aggression.

Would you consider shooting 38% from the floor, 30% from 3, and 60% from the FT line slumping?

We actually discussed this on the podcast this week and i completely agree. If Joey is starting it means Alex is down. We don’t want that.

Going by Coach K's trend this season and him still figuring things out I wouldn't be surprised if Joey starts tonight. Not saying he will play starters minutes but he may start early so he can stretch the floor. Should he start? Probably not. But I see Koach trying it. I mean he did start Goldwire against Kansas

Wouldn’t stun me, i mean he’s had 4 different starting lineups through four games so what’s another one. Additionally, as the first four games have shown, he will play the players who are playing the best that night, the most minutes. That’s also been consistent including on who starts the second half. K rarely in the past would throw out different second half starters than the ones who started the game. He has this year.

With little separation between most of the team, it seems it will be a game to game situational call by K. Who is making plays, shooting hot, making defensive plays, what is needed, etc., will play. Joey hit a few 3's last game, when no one but Tre hit 3's, so he earned some minutes. AOC did not hit shots and Joey did.

He seems to reward players for how well they played the previous game. We shot poorly last game but our defense stayed solid even with Joey in so I think he will roll with Joey to see if he can hit some shots early. If he can't then back to the bench he goes

The thing I don't understand about guys like Tucker is why do they come to Duke when he knew who was in the recruiting class plus the returning players. I think he was a 4 star which to me meant he was still an outstanding player but he had to know he was going to have to bide his time. Half a semester is really not giving it much of a chance. Same way with Moore this year so far. It'seems been only four games , he's seen limited minutes and according to reports he's a one and done. Going back to Tucker if he had stayed it would be his junior year and with his shooting ability he may have been the 3 point shooter we needed. Who knows he may could have filled that role last year if only he had been a little patience. I know I've must have said this a thousand times but recruits know the deal when they come to Duke and Coach K is not gonna have a 12 man rotation with every man getting the same PT. We'very had some transfers in my opinion because of that. I hope all of our transfers have good careers wherever they end up. How many do we have at other schools this year? Anyone know? I know Jeter around 4 ppg and Jordan around 9 ppg at Butler, Derryk Thorton. So far averaging 16 ppg at BC . Didn't even know he was at BC. Thought he was at Southern Cal. Happy for him but hope Tre shuts him down. Any others? I hope Moore comes back next year and Joey can produce in more ways than just scoring. OFC

Gonna be honest....until he can play ACC type defense, he’s not going to see meaningful minutes. I hate it as I really want to see him succeed. It just sucks for him because it’s not gonna get easier next year at all.
I think his Defense is all that is holding him back though. He’s gotta start moving his feet faster and stop grabbing.

Still no?

I don't know, 'cause I'm not K, but I'm not sure we win this game tonight without his contributions. If Cash is out for awhile (or shudder, the entire season) that could make a difference. Anyway, starting isn't as important as contributing. Joey did a great job tonight, and I hope he's able to build on that.

Unfortunately we have seen players have what we think of as break out games ( AOC had 20+ in a game last year i believe) only to see them disappear back to the bench. The game against MSU will tell us if Coach K truly trusts Joey after tonight. I believe he has earned more time, leeway to miss a shot or two and still be on the court...but I am not the GOAT.

Joey had a great game tonight but still think he has some seasoning to do. What I hope his play does is give him more confidence both offensively and on the defensive end. Also maybe it will motivate Alex to make the best of his minutes. If Stanley is gonna miss some games then we are gonna need Alex to contribute. After all he is a junior and by today's standards a veteran player. OFC

Baker has a much better stroke than AOC. AOC is not a good shooter or player for that matter.

Under K, starters are generally a good indication on who will get the majority of the minutes. I’m leaving toward Joey starting because I think it matters. Carey looks good in that post. I think he’s even more effective if you can spread the floor but hey we will see!

With Cassius out, does Moore slide over to 2 and let Joey start at 3 or does Goldwire start and play 2 PGs? Or maybe AOC?
