Can Oats ever win a title with this philosophy?

Hate to bear bad tidings, but if this question is fitting for Bama, it’s also appropriate to ask about Pope and UK…..
I think you have to play to your teams strengths for sure, but you can look at this both ways too if you want to be negative about. You can also say you can never win a title if you can't shoot the three ball either, because if you run into a hot shooting 3 team and you can't match them trading 3's for 2's you will go home. I actually think BYU would have beat Bama, but Bama was doing this exact thing to them. I think you need to be very well balanced and adjust to you competition. There might be a lot of games where 30-35 threes is exactly what you need if you are getting and making them, but their might also be games where that is taken away and you need to pound it inside. if you are one trick pony deep in the tourney that is where you have a great chance of getting sent home. You can have a ice cold shooting night and go home though it happens.

You cannot be one-dimensional on offense … just that simple.

Plenty of teams have won championships in the last 10 years taking 40% or more of their shots from 3.

Who are those teams? Im legit asking because I don't remember them. Villanova is the only one i can think of that might fit and they somehow had guys that didn't miss.

That said, bama and pope want more than 40% shot from three. Its just really tough to win 6 hard games in a row like that.

I thought Bama had more athleticism than duke. I was wrong. Also, duke plays both ends and bama does not work as hard defensively. Sears looked average in the game. The game showed me our team needs a big athleticism upgrade.

To be successful at a high level, you need players with great fundamental basketball skills, of course, but they also need to have “twitch” … the term used by football coaches to describe players that can quickly move and react.

UConn x 2 and Nova x 2

Virginia was at 39.5% of their shots taken from 3.

The three point rate of remaining teams:

Duke: 46%
Florida: 39%
Houston: 26%
UT: 38.9%
Auburn: 50%
MSU: 28.1%

His teams shoot an extraordinary amount of 3’s.

To win a title you’re going to have to play 4 pretty good teams. And shooting that many has a higher risk factor of failure. Eventually you’re going to have a bad night from outside.

They looked great Thursday, but tonight they’re going to have to repaint the rims.
I don't think his teams play enough defense to win a title, plus his teams are streaky.

UConn i knew was close but i didn't guess them being over 40.

For the record, I don't think 40% is a bad benchmark you just cant be a one trick pony. If shots arent falling, you need something else. Oats doesn't have it. Until we got our doors blown off in the sec tournament, pope didn't have it.

Jesus how many UVA fans had heart attacks during that title run? Weren't they also down double digits at the half to the 16 seed in round one? That had to be an incredibly stressful few weeks.

I’m just going from memory, but I’m pretty sure they trailed in the final seconds in their last three games in the tournament.

Isn’t Oats ‘ approach either 3s or layups? Problem against Duke is they weren’t getting many layups because Duke had too much athletic size inside. So that leaves - shoot a bunch of 3s.

Many times their guards got into the paint but saw that they couldn’t get all the way to the rim, so they turned and threw it back out:

Those are the defensive efficiency numbers under Nate Oats in his tenure at Bama.

Talk about hot and cold. The years where it's good they can certainly win the title because it's usually combined with a top 25 offense.

But can his teams be consistently good on defense? No clue based on the above

The main thing is for the coach to play with a philosophy that fits the team.

I mean if you have a bunch of guys shooting 40% from 3...........you take a bunch of threes lol.

It's wild to be when you have a team that UK recently played in Illinois and they are 304th in 3 pt FG% and 14th in 2 pt FG% and yet are 29th in 3PA/FGA.

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

They lost because they ran into Flagg, 9 out of 10 years there isnt a player that good so yes that philosophy can win with a team as good as Bama

Regarding Oates his philosophy is right, his personal was not.

He promised a title run this year. I heard that some of Bama boosters were pissed off after losing to Auburn at home and in the SEC tournament . Oates was under some pressure and he was basically begging before the Duke game for NIL money to keep flowing at high level so he can keep getting players.
You heard? Who told you this?

Alabama's philosophy wasn't the problem. Duke is just really really good.

Alabama isn't 1 demensional. Duke is just really really good.

People in this thread seeing "You need to be able to adjust". Duke was just so much better than them last night. They tried taking the ball inside, Duke's size was too much.

According to many here, Houston and Mich St should be favorites then

LOL--he got to the Elite 8 after the Final Four at Alabama and his philosophy is the issue? WOW

The position he's got to upgrade is the wing position. He needs 6'6/6'8 wings who can play like Pitino eventually found with Anderson/Mercer/Walker--those are the difference makers in that system because they can do everything on the court and are hard to matchup with-but impossible when you have a litany of them.
This. He's doing this at Bama. FF last year. EE this year. Oats is really good. He's recruiting well at Bama.
