Oh god! I’ll defer to someone else to explain this Rocket Science LOL. You may stir up the private vs public topic with this inquiry! And we know that is always a spirited discussion LOLI'm confused, and that's not a rare occurrence. Splain to me how it works please!
I’m deferring because I too don’t understand the damn thingI'm not asking to have a debate over whether its good or bad, you like it or you don't, or the public/private debate. We all have our opinions on that!! (and mine is right by the way) I just want to know how it works. I've looked all over the ol interweb and I'm more lost now than when I started.
Here is what I have found to be the simplest explanationI'm confused, and that's not a rare occurrence. Splain to me how it works please!
Pretty much this. Except this year they added you are in the class for 2 years. So Naz will have to play 7a this year and next. Then if no trophies back to 5A for Mccarthys senior seasonHere is what I have found to be the simplest explanation
The formula, more commonly referred to as the "success factor," was implemented as a measure to level the playing field between private schools and public schools. Thus, a non-boundaried school program that achieves two state trophies — the number of teams awarded a state trophy varies by sport — over the course of a four-year stretch is bumped up a class the following year. One of the trophies must have been won in the previous two seasons.

I think the way its written now you need to make it twice in the class. But I'm confused as you when it gets to this point. So what if they win this year but don’t make the finals next year, what happens in 2020? Drop to 5a, down to 6a, stay 7a?

All.... I sincerely hope you are correct. It was my understanding you work your way up and then down. Meaning after two years it's 6A. Did you find something specific language wise that spells it out from the IHSA. I'm checking but not having much luck. Ratsy
All.... I e-mailed Matt Troha with the IHSA. He's great at getting back with questions in a prompt manner. godfather53 is correct. If Nazareth does not make the finals in the next two years they will drop down to their multiplied enrollment. Ratsy

All.... Getting out can be as bad as getting in. Here is SHG's timeline with the "factor." Ratsy
2013/14 14-0 (5A)
2014/15 14-0 (5A)
Success Factor into effect.
2015/16 11-1 (6A)
2016/17 13-1 (2nd place pounded by P.R) (6A)
By getting to the title two more years in 6A.
2017/18 9-3 (6A)
2018/19 Ongoing , will play in 6A postseason. Actual school enrollment 648.
Question 1: What if they make it this year but not next year? Does that commit/force them into another two year stint in 7A?
Question 2: if they make it both this year and in 2019 football season- do they then get forced up into 8A for fall 2020 season?
igotgroot perfectly set forth the rule on Sept. 1 in the JCA v. ICCP thread, which is clearer in the IC back to back analysis...back to back 3A pushes you up; two in four years is one class - but one must be in the last two years, three in four years is two classes, four in four is three classes.
If IC goes to the title game in 4A this year, they go 5A next year...if they don't, they remain 4A because of 2 in 4 years, one in the last two...
If IC goes to the title game this year in 4A and the title game next year in 5A, they go 6A the next...but barring enrollment changes they only can go up 3 classes, so they remain in 6A no matter how many championship games in a row they go to...
14decoys, see what you started? You more confused now? LOL
Well its good to know that I'm not the only one who is confused. My original question came about by looking at Montini. They were in the finals (won a trophy) in 2014 and 2015. I thought 2 in the previous 4 years meant a bump up. I didn't know 1 had to be in the last 2 years. I was looking at Montini because in week 4 this season the IHSA Playoff Outlook had them in 6A, but didn't mention them on the "how playoff teams are determined" page. They had SHG, IC, and Naz, on that page but not Montini. On the Playoff Outlook page however, they had them in 6A and an asterisk by them denoting "Success Factor". That's now gone, hence my confusion.
This is all because IHSA keeps tweaking the SF language. I think it should clearly read “the success factor will be applied to inflict the most difficulty on the teams we feel cause the most issue with washington’s Path to a state title”.
