Once again Mitch reminds us of why he shouldn't be our AD. A program like Kentucky shouldn't be publicly going after coaches without some back-channel solid reason to believe those coaches will accept the position if offered. Not only is it embarrassing, but you also just notified whoever is selected now that he is our second, third, fourth, etc. choice. This is obviously not a good look. All but the fine print should have been agreed on out of the public's eye. Arkansas certainly handled their search better than us.

Drew gave him every indication he wanted the job. Barnhart can’t account for his family hating Lexington and not wanting to come here

I'm definitely not one to defend Mitch but we literally had fans playing Batman investigating every little thing and posting their discoveries. I'm not sure what Mitch is supposed to do. He can't cover up flight logs.

While I disagree with having Drew as no 1 choice, that he declined our offer is not on MB. I think we scared him off, quite frankly. Immediately flying to meet Hurley's agent with a fistful of obscene $ with a very remote chance of getting him is absurd and very embarrassing for the program. While I kind of want Billy D, it may be time to switch gears and go after an up and coming coach who really wants the job.

Not true. Arkansas missed publicly on two coaches until Cal decided to bolt after telling Mitch and Kentucky fans he wanted to be here. If Cal had stayed, Arkansas would still be searching for a coach.

It's not Mitch's fault that Drew's wife either didn't like Lexington or they as a family didn't want to move.

Regarding Hurley he offered him nearly $100M and he he said thanks but no thanks. What more can he do!!??

I'm not the biggest Barnhart fan around. This isn't Mitch's fault.

Hopefully, you are not equating the two.

Strong suspicion Drew either told Mitch or gave him plenty of indications he was in, just needed to convince the family.

Mitch HAD to make Hurley say no, publicly, to the biggest offer the sport has seen - to appease fans and boosters alike.

I have no concerns thus far ... but now it's tricky and Mitch has to get it right.

Family not wanting to move should have been known by Scott Drew before he entertained the thought of accepting the Uk job
I don't think people are considering that MAYBE both Drew and Mitch knew it would be a no, but Mitch out of respect for his friend offered him knowing that he IS a great coach. It didn't really waste much of anyone's time, because getting Hurley was definitely going to be a no when it's clear that he wants the legendary status of possibly winning back-to-back-to-back national titles. Everyone knows that right now Donovan is concerned with his own team the Bulls trying to get into the playoffs. It's just bad timing all around if you're looking for the hottest thing, or coaches with the biggest reputations.

The sweet and kindly Kentucky faithful would be screaming for his head if he doesn't offer everyone on their wishlist in a very public manner. They'll swear up and down Mitch skipped right over the best to get to the mediocre.

Or Hurley wanting to stay and try to build UCONN into a dynasty. Mitch had a blank check and for all we know did everything in his power to hire both away from their respective schools but couldn’t. Hardly a failure or embarrassing.

honestly only thing embarrasing is how delusional all the people on this sub were about coach Cal. I should really say spoiled. the dude kept the school in the conversation for 15 years. Good or bad they were still relevant. Uk fans re about to get a taste of complete irrelevancy like UCLA, Indiana. and Louisville.

I don't believe this had anything to do with his family. They weren't in Lexington long enough to know if they hated it. The coach just didn't have the courage to take on this high pressure job.

Exactly. This all should have been worked out prior to any public knowledge. If the decision was based on whether Drew's mother in law and wife liked the boutiques, churches and houses in Lexington then he should have NEVER been considered for this job.

It is not his fault that Drew decline the offer, but it is his fault that he ever extended him an offer. This makes as much sense as the speaker of the house taking a vote to the floor before knowing if he had the votes to pass his bill.

I've been saying that Mitch needed to go before Cal. I hope he proves me wrong, though.

Charter a flight from a different airport would be one option

It was time for Cal to go. The relationship had soured. He didn’t much care for the administration and fans and the feeling was pretty mutual by the end. It was best for both in the long run.

However, the perception in coaching circles very well could be that UK’s administration/fans “ran off” a “hall of fame” coach with a 75 percent winning percentage who’d won a title. They won’t see the decline. They will see the entire body of work that looks good on the surface if you don’t dive in too deep.

Big name, successful coaches weren’t beating down the door begging to take this job the last time we “ran off” a title winning coach in Tubby. We ended up with a drunken lunatic from Texas.

Curious. Is there anything that will make you morons happy? Maybe it’s the FAN BASE that’s the problem.

"Wow honey this sounds like an amazing opportunity. Let's see what the fine collection of humans over at Rupp Rafters think about us coming to Lexington!"
Oh, wait, honey, we don't have to go to them, they are apparently going to come to us by calling me at a local restaurant and tracking our flight itinerary (and God knows what else).

Mitch had to go big after the two misses before going elsewhere or the fan base would have torn him apart. Same with the contract to Cal. Even thought I criticized him for the Cal contract I can see why he did it. Just think what would have happened if he had let the Cal of that time go. He was receiving praise at the time for not letting Cal get away. Maybe now he will go after targets that want to coach at Ky and not have to start the discussion with money bags in had.
