MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 9, 2017) - Following his record-setting weekend at the West Virginia State Games, redshirt senior Nate Carr of the WVU men’s swimming and diving team has been named the West Virginia Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.


The Charleston, West Virginia, native won eight total events over the course of the two-day meet, including four individual wins. Carr set two pool records last weekend. First, he broke his own WVU Natatorium record in the 200individual medley in a time of 1:48.97 before helping the men’s 800 freestyle relay team to an all-time pool best time of 6:44.75 in the event.


Along with his 200 individual medley victory, Carr’s individual wins were in the 400 individual medley, 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke.


The Mountaineer men won all 20 events at the West Virginia State Games and claimed a first-place team finish for the seventh consecutive season.


This Week in Women’s Soccer: The Mountaineers continue their homestand at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium against Iowa State on Friday, Oct. 13, with kick set for 7 p.m. … fans who wear their Halloween costumes to the match will receive free admission.


Last Week in Women’s Soccer: WVU (11-3, 4-1) opened its home Big 12 Conference slate with a pair of wins, defeating No. 19 Oklahoma State, 1-0, on Oct. 6, and Oklahoma, 5-1, on Oct. 8 … senior defender Amandine Pierre-Louis tallied the game-winner against the Cowgirls in the 29th minute … the Mountaineers finished with a 36-7 edge in shots and a 13-2 advantage in shots on-goal … sophomore Rylee Foster made both saves for the team’s eighth shutout of the season and the 16th of her career … WVU also finished with a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks … five different goal scorers factored into the team’s win on Sunday: senior forwards Michaela Abam and Heather Kaleiohi, junior defender Bianca St. Georges and freshmen Lauren Segalla and Issy Coombes … WVU finished with a 21-5 shot advantage and forced OU into seven saves … Foster earned the win, while freshman Kayla Thompson made the lone save in the 80th minute.


Notes: WVU now shows a 36-match unbeaten streak at home against conference opponents, the third-longest active streak in the nation … the Mountaineers have won 19 straight home conference wins, the second-longest streak in Big 12 history … junior forward Sh’Nia Gordon tallied two assists on Sunday and owns a team-best seven helpers … she and Abam pace the team with 11 points each … Abam leads the team with four goals … WVU is the first team to score five or more goals on OU in a Big 12 match since 2011 … Pierre-Louis’ goal was her second game-winner of the season … Sunday’s match was the team’s annual Pink Match … WVU raised $8,813.32 for Morgantown’s Betty Puskar Breast Care Center this year.


This Week in Men’s Soccer: West Virginia welcomes No. 5 Michigan State to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. ET … the midweek showdown is Dollar Night, where tickets and select concession items will be available for $1 … WVU then travels to Bowling Green on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. … tickets for Wednesday’s game against MSU are available at WVUGAME.com, 1-800-WVU GAME or on game day at the DDSS ticket office.


Last Week in Men’s Soccer: West Virginia opened Mid-American Conference play with a 1-1 double-overtime draw against Northern Illinois on Saturday night … the Mountaineers recorded 18 shots, with three coming on goal, while the Huskies had six shots, two on goal … WVU’s goal by junior Rushawn Larmond came in the 38th minute, which answered NIU’s goal, which was credited as an own-goal 11 minutes earlier.


Notes: West Virginia is 6-3-3 on the season and 0-0-1 in MAC play … junior Rushawn Larmond’s goal on Saturday was his first of the season … sophomore Sebastian Garcia-Herreros and senior Louis Thomas earned assists … Garcia-Herreros now has a team-high-tying four assists, while Thomas has two … Wednesday’s matchup with Michigan State marks WVU’s second against a top-25 opponent this season and the first against a top-10 foe … senior Jad Arslan continues to lead the MAC and rank No. 12 nationally with three game-winning goals … junior goalkeeper Stephen Banick ranks 22nd nationally and third in the league with five shutouts … Arslan and sophomore Albert Andres-Llop are second in the conference with four goals.


This Week in Volleyball: WVU (12-6, 1-4) returns to Morgantown on Friday, Oct. 13, and plays host to Oklahoma (4-14, 1-4) in a 6 p.m. tilt … the first 500 fans through the gate will receive a free rally towel … in honor of Alumni Weekend, the Mountaineers also will recognize several former student-athletes throughout the match … in addition, the team will host a free autograph session to all fans at the conclusion of the match.


Last Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers dropped a 3-1 match to No. 11 Kansas at the WVU Coliseum on Oct. 4 … Four Mountaineers landed in double digits, as Katelyn Evans recorded a team-high 15 kills on Wednesday … Mia Swanegan hit a team-best .301 with 14 kills … Natania Levak finished with 11, while Payton Caffrey rounded out the team in double digits with 10 … Erin Slinde assisted on 46 kills, as Alexa Hasting dished out five assists … Hasting also led the team with 22 digs, followed by Caffrey with 15 … WVU finished the match hitting .255 with 57 kills, seven blocks and 62 digs … West Virginia then squared off against Baylor, dropping a three-set match to the Lady Bears in Waco, Texas, on Oct. 7 … Levak had a team-best six kills for WVU, while Caffrey had five … Swanegan and Slinde each had three, with Slinde hitting .333 in the process … Evans added a pair of kills as well … DeMeo led WVU’s blocking effort with five … Levak had three, and Caffrey and Swanegan added two apiece … Gianna Gotterba had 11 digs, followed by Hasting’s 10 … Slinde had 10 assists, splitting time at setter with Emma Anderson, who dished out seven assists … WVU finished the match with 21 kills and eight team blocks.


Notes: Through 18 matches, West Virginia is hitting .241 and holding its opponents to a .174 clip, while out blocking its opponents, 150.5-117.5 … Caffrey continues to lead the Big 12 with 0.45 aces per set and ranks inside the top 10 in points (eighth) and kills (ninth) … additionally, Slinde sits inside the top five in service aces (third) and assists (fourth) … the sophomore setter averages 0.32 service aces and 10.32 assists per set … Swanegan ranks sixth with 1.15 blocks per set, and Hasting ranks ninth with 3.63 digs per set … Gotterba also returned to the court last week after suffering a knee injury earlier this season.


This Week in Cross Country: The Mountaineers travel to the Penn State National Open on Friday, October 13, at the Blue-White Golf Course in University Park, Pennsylvania … the 6k race is set to begin at 10:45 a.m. ET.


Last Week in Cross Country: WVU was off last week. … the Mountaineers last competed at the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Kentucky, on Sept. 30, earning an eighth-place team finish out of 37 Division I schools.


Notes: West Virginia entered the USTFCCCA National Coaches’ Poll for the first time since Nov. 1, 2016, last week. … the Mountaineers were ranked No. 29 and were one of three Big 12 schools and one of four Mid-Atlantic Region representatives included in the poll … WVU continued to sit in fourth in the weekly regional rankings last week … Friday marks the second time the Mountaineers race at Penn State this season … WVU competed in the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Sept. 8, finishing in sixth place … West Virginia has raced at Penn State eight times since 2014 … WVU has traveled to the Penn State National Open eight times in the past decade, including each of the past three seasons. …WVU finished in fourth place at the event last year.

This Week in Golf: The West Virginia University golf team hosts the Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia … golfers will play 36 holes in a shotgun start on the par-72, 7308-yard course on Monday … players will hit the links in tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. for the final round on Tuesday … Utah, Rutgers, Akron, James Madison, Seton Hall, Bowling Green, Davidson, Eastern Kentucky, Loyola, Ohio, Winthrop, Marshall, Towson, Robert Morris and Youngstown State will join West Virginia at the event.

Notes: The 2017 season marks WVU’s third year hosting the event … Arkansas took home the team title in 2016, with the Mountaineers taking fourth … Philipp Matlari, Max Sear, Tristan Nicholls, Etienne Papineau and Matthew Sharpstene will compete for West Virginia … Avery Schneider, Mark Goetz, Drew Dewald and Logan Perkins will play as individuals … Matlai leads the team with a scoring average of 70.00 … Sear and Nicholls are averaging 70.33 and 70.67 strokes per round, respectively … for the first time in program history, WVU received six votes in the Golfweek Coaches Poll.


This Week in Swimming & Diving: The Mountaineers are off this week … WVU next competes on Oct. 27-28 when it hosts Seton Hall and Xavier at the WVU Natatorium.


Last Week in Swimming & Diving: The WVU men’s and women’s teams claimed first-place finishes at the West Virginia State Games, on Oct. 6-7, at the WVU Natatorium … the Mountaineer men won all 20 events over the course of the two-day meet featuring swimming and diving programs from around the state of West Virginia … the women’s team won 15 of 20 events during the competition … WVU’s men’s team finished with 1,899 points, well ahead of second-place West Virginia Wesleyan (456) … the Mountaineer women earned 1,515.5 points, beating out second-place Marshall, which finished with 1,262.5 points.


Notes: The WVU men’s team victory was its seventh straight in the West Virginia State Games … the women’s win was its sixth overall in the seven-year event and first since 2015 … the Mountaineers broke three WVU Natatorium records during the meet, including sophomore Julia Bullock in the women’s 200 individual medley (2:04.56), redshirt senior Nate Carr in the men’s 200 individual medley (1:48.97) and the men’s 800 freestyle relay team of Carr, junior Drew Damich and sophomores Ryan Kelly and Trayton Saladin (6:44.75) … Carr finished with eight total wins on the weekend – four individual, four relay … Bullock won seven events, including three individual victories and four relay wins … the Mountaineers finished with 12 swimmers who contributed to multiple victories on Saturday alone … seniors Logan McHenry (314.40) and Michael Proietto (304.72) and junior Julia Calcut (267.80) each earned NCAA Zone-qualifying scores in the 1-meter dive … Twelve Mountaineers made their collegiate debuts at the WV State Games, including David Dixon, who won his first individual race in the 200 butterfly.


Coach Vic Riggs following the West Virginia State Games: “I was very pleased with the team’s effort, energy and racing. Each team broke pool records and we had many season-best times. It’s definitely the start we were looking to have. Our goal was to finish as strong as we started and we did that, which is a good indication of where we are as a team going into the season.”


This Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers are off this week.


Last Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers began fall season with races against Duquesne and Dayton on Saturday, Oct. 7, in Morgantown on the Monongahela River ... The three teams competed in two trial rounds, taking a short break in between rounds ... the first round of racing consisted of each teams’ varsity eight boats ... the teams competed in four paced races, beginning at a 16-rate and increasing to a pace of 24 strokes per minute in four separate races ... After a short break, the Mountaineers, Dukes and Flyers competed in the same style pieces with the varsity four boats ... the three teams each used three separate boats in the ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ races.


Coach Jimmy King following Saturday’s scrimmage: “Early season scrimmages are great for helping us identify what we’re doing well and what needs more attention. I was pleased to see all of our crews make adjustments and improvements through both rounds of competition. Off the water, we spent considerable time discussing how we can be better and now it’s a matter following through and actually doing it. Thanks to Dayton and Duquesne for joining us on the Mon’ today. We had beautiful conditions for our scrimmage and were pleased to host them on our home water.”


This Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers will head to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional Championships from Oct. 13-16 ... the Atlantic regionals will be held on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.


Last Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers opened the 2017 fall season at the Cleveland State Viking Invitational in Cleveland, Ohio, on Oct. 6-8 ... the tournament field consisted of host Cleveland State, Akron and Cincinnati ... on Friday, the Mountaineers bested Akron in five of the six singles matches against the Zips ... WVU then faced Cleveland State, where they won two of three doubles matches ... West Virginia would go on to face Cincinnati in a doubles tilt to close the first day of competition ... the Bearcats were able to best WVU in two of three matches ... on Saturday, the Mountaineers began competition by splitting the six singles matches against Cleveland State ... WVU then faced Cincinnati for their second meeting in doubles play ... the Mountaineers won a 7-5 decision on court two, but the Bearcats rallied to take the next two matches ... WVU closed the second day of competition with a doubles tilt against Akron, where they took two of three matches against its counterparts ... On the final day, the Mountaineers continued their winning ways in singles play against Cincinnati, winning four matches ... West Virginia would then face Cleveland State in a doubles match to wrap up the Viking Invite ... WVU claimed two of the three doubles matches as the Mountaineers won 6-3 at No. 2 and 6-3 on the third court to close the tournament.


Notes: WVU won eight doubles matches and 12 singles matches over the course of the weekend ... Anne-Sophie Courteau and Giovanna Caputo led the Mountaineers with three singles victories apiece in their first collegiate tournament ... Lyn Yuen Choo, Sofia Duran and Paula Goetz each registered two wins in singles play during the Viking Invite ... Caputo, Courteau and Choo each registered three doubles wins in the Viking Invite ...eight different doubles teams won a match at the Viking Invite.


This Week in Baseball: West Virginia concludes its fall slate with a matchup against Bucknell on Sunday, Oct. 15, at noon ET … admission is free for all fans at Monongalia County Ballpark.


Last Week in Baseball: WVU opened the fall season with a pair of wins, 7-6 over Marshall on Oct. 6 and 13-3 in the annual Alumni Game on Oct. 7 … WVU came back twice to beat in-state foe Marshall, with a pair of runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at 5-5 before tying the game once again and driving in the eventual game-winning run with two outs in the eighth … back-to-back two-out walks started the eighth before junior Kyle Gray walked with the bases loaded to tie the game at 6-6 and freshman Connor Hamilton singled home the eventual game-winning run … playing against a squad comprised of more than 40 former WVU baseball letterwinners, the current Mountaineers scored six runs in the third inning and at least two runs in three of the final four frames to earn the win on Saturday.


Notes: A crowd of 550 saw WVU beat Marshall in Friday night’s exhibition contest … Kyle Gray led the team with two hits and four RBIs on Friday, driving in the game’s first run in the first inning and plating two in the sixth and one in the eighth … junior Andrew Zitel added a hit and an RBI and scored two runs and walked twice … on the mound, senior BJ Myers pitched the final 2.2 innings and earned the win while striking out five and allowed no runs on one hit … junior Christian Young got the start and pitched 3.0 innings, allowing a run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts … in the Alumni Game, sophomore Isaiah Kearns and redshirt freshman Nick Denicola led the team with three hits, while junior Jimmy Galusky had two hits and a team-best three RBIs … Denicola and Zitel notched a pair of RBIs, and Zitel added two hits … for the alumni, Josh Williamson had a sixth-inning RBI single before JT Heenan had an RBI single and scored on Harrison Musgrave’s second hit of the game in a two-run seventh inning.
