I have really liked how he has carried himself on the sideline and in interviews. It sucks to lose the recruiting edge that Capel provided, but I think we picked up a great coach to replace him. I hope Carrawell sticks around post-K. I'd love to see Shane and JJ on that bench again one day. Elton may even have the personality for a job like that. We have so many talented alumni at this point that we have lots of good options from within the family when that time comes. It's great to be a Devil.

It’s nice to have the pool Duke has to pull from.

I doubt Shane ever coaches in college. Out of his mouth he’s always said he prefers the NBA more than the college game. That seems to be the sentiment generally. Same with Christian and JJ.

I think Jon will be Duke’s next coach. And for a long time. Nolan would be a nice assistant too. I could see G coaching as well.

I think Jon has the mind for the game, but lacks the communication skills to coach players at a high level. I worry that his head coaching career will be similar to Larry Bird's, and for the same reasons.

JJ Redick said on his podcast about a year ago that once his NBA days are over, he plans on never shooting a basketball again. Found that fascinating, basically he stated he's a perfectionist and couldn't stand to not be a perfect shooter. He has also mentioned numerous times on his pod that he would never consider coaching.
I'm thinking he gets some media gig but is tired of it after 5 or so years.

Carrawell was awesome on Earn Everything, he seems to connect with the kids really well. Nolan is a hidden gem, not even named an assistant coach and he seems just as important as anyone else.
Jon has blown me away too, and I had never thought of it until watching the show, but I think Jon has a great chance at being the next Duke coach. You can tell how close him and K are.....

He also said the only way he’d ever coach was if K called him and asked him to coach at Duke

Seeing how Elton Brand is the GM for the 76ers, arguably the most talented team in the East, I doubt he'll consider coaching anytime soon. But he'll surely be around basketball for a while... unless he has an itching for directing movies again.

Scheyer as the next coach? I think he's certainly a candidate. I wonder if K & company would want him to have head coaching experience before handing the keys over to him. It's nice to have continuity with assistants... but it's also nice to have experience, too.

I agree with that sentiment. He’s an immature communicator right now. I think he’s better than he was and he will get better.

I hope K sticks around awhile to further season Jon. The longer JS is an assistant on staff, the more viable candidate he becomes.

I think Capel would be a good choice. Bobby Hurley, Collins, Wojo, Amaker, J. Dawkins, Scheyer, Nate, Nolan, Bilas, Battier, G. Hill, Laettner, Jay Williams, Carrawell, and Mike Breyer from the Duke family could be the next coach. From outside the Duke family there's Brad Steven's, Tom Izzo and Jamie Dixon. And of course it could be a Duke player who hasn' the even played at Duke yet depending on how long Coach K is around. OFC

Capel is a heck of a coach and recruiter. If he has any success in the next couple years at pitt then he should definitely get the nod. Pitt is literally at rock bottom and can nowhere but up. Unless Capel wants to just build his own thing at Pitt, i think he is man the for the job.

John will be a good cosch someday, but he is still learning and growing. Let him run his own team and show what he can do before he gets a chance at a top program like Duke. Capel has already proven he can build a successful program as a head coach and i expect him to do the same at pitt.

We will know more about Capel in the next 3 years. If he turns Pitt around, I’d assume he would be the front-runner.

Collins had 1 good year at Northwestern and they are back to being average. Wojo seems to have peaked/maxed out at Marquette, a good team but really no chance of being great.
Hurley was great at ASU last year, I doubt ASU stays great, but we will see.

A lot of options, but honestly, there's no one out there that I'm confident in taking over for K.
I don't think Hurley has the right mojo on the sideline. Not sure how good of a coach Capel is. I lean that he's a really good recruiter, ok on game day. Not sold on Wojo or Collins. I lean that they would be in over their head in Durham.
Maybe Scheyer, but no one knows how he is as a coach. Easy sitting beside "the man."

We need a good recruiter, a master motivator, and a really good x and o guy.
Basically, another K.

Maybe we should just hire a person that has those traits that played ball in college? I’m sure there are basketball alum out there in business or leadership roles that would be interested. If we could get someone like that to come in now to be groomed... let’s break the mold of how coaching hiring works.

Coach K was a West Point grad, working class background, had been the starting PG in college, and was coached by a legendary motivational coach. He had a few years of HC experience with very little media pressure in those days. The media savvy he developed on the job as an underdog in the shadow of Dean Smith. If we're looking for another Coach K, we need to consider all the factors that made the man. I want a guy who knows real struggle in life. Bobby Hurley knows a thing or two about that. He is probably the most similar to K among all candidates in terms of life story.

I think there are even better fits outside of the narrow family of Duke basketball.

I love this thread. Glad we are discussing the possibilities of our next coach. It's something that needs to be talked about. I know it's going to be tough to accept that Coach
K will retire someday. Duke needs to have someone in mind to be our next coach. OFC

There are cases of administrations going sour but one of the benefits of continued success is coaching trees.

Foundation = success even with subpar coaching or talent. Fortunately we have all 3 going for us at the moment.
