Here's Eric Bossi's story on Patrick Baldwin Jr., the likely No. 1 player in the nation for 2021 and -- in case you haven't heard -- the son of former NU player and coach Pat Baldwin. NU is one of 12 schools to have already offered, but could he go straight to the NBA?

If he is in fact the number 1 prospect in his class he is going straight to the NBA. Rules will change.

Doesn't feel like we have much of an advantage. At least we seem to be in the mix. We should get to a point where we go after the #1 player in the nation every year, so I guess this is a start.

Not every #1 player has the academics for NU. Duke basketball yes, but not NU.

If I were his dad, I might encourage him to do one year in college somewhere. He hasn't faced big ten level competition week after week let alone pro level, plus his dad is in the business of raising young men up to excel in BB and life. I would have a hard time giving over completely to the idea that my job was an optional step. OTOH, million dollar contract isn't anything to sneeze at if he is that good.

Minimum $15M per year, if I am his Dad he is taking the money. You can hire quite a few people to tutor your son at that rate.

Well, his $15M for one year is more than I made in my entire career. I belive the rookie contact is guaranteed for 3 years with an option for the 4th. I’ll take the $45M and take my chances. Insurance, don’t think so.

What’s the end goal to Baldwin?

“Most likely the NBA,” he said. “Definitely the NBA. I’m not going to sit here and say I don’t want to go to the NBA, if I get the chance I would love to.”

While Baldwin didn’t give a list of the schools showing interest, he did single out one school that is actively pursuing him.

“I really don’t like to speak out on interest as much, but one that’s really kind of put their foot forward and is one of the frontrunners is Duke,” Baldwin said. “I have a relationship with Jon Scheyer.”

“Just the Blue Devil atmosphere, the culture, all the players that have gone through there, coach K obviously and it’s a great school academically too,” he added when asked about the Blue Devil program.

If Jr. doesn't go straight to the pros. at this stage looks like Dook could be the front-runner; tho wouldn't discount him playing for pops for a yr.

5 stars want to be on national tv and our schedule just doesnt have big name programs in ooc that allow 5 stars to be well rounded against top national competition.

So, my opinion remains, it makes little sense to play one year in the ncaa for a non title contending team, as opposed to playing for a ring and National stardom to build one's stock in a draft lottery?

I mean one year means no degree so really no logical reason to come here unless he wants to play at Senior's place.

Even if it is, I trust the Moderator to interpret the rules. I never got a ticket for going 3 mph over the speed limit and nobody wanted Football Phil to stop posting. grey areas.

NBA draft order is based on scouting. They don't care where you play.

I still am failing to see where I was "bullying" anyone. I asked a question and I didn't make any assumptions. Was just wondering if it's against the rules or not to post under different monikers.

The article claims he is a phenom and likely rivals #1 overall. That almost certainly means directly to the NBA or one year at a school to get a Championship ring. Maybe this kid is the exception and pivots to play here just because.

I find that narrative unbelievable but who knows.

Actually, he would create a bigger legacy for himself and increase his draft stock by leading NU to a B1G championship and a Final Four. A national championship would put him in Larry Bird territory.

Im open to discussing the reasons why he would come to NU even though it is really silly to think he comes here when he is assumed to be a "one and done" or go right to the nba.
I guess it could happen. It happened in the NBA when Lebron went back to Cleveland to win a championship, so it isnt completely out of the question having the best player opt for a tougher challenge than going to Duke or Kentucky (wont go there) for a turnkey ring.

Ben Simmons went to LSU, not exactly a basketball powerhouse. If you are good enough to be a lottery pick after one year of college you will be, scouts don’t really care who you played in your first 8-10 games in college during the non-conference schedule. It’s not like Duke and Kentucky don’t play Sisters of the Poor during their non-conference too.

Ben Simmons went to LSU.
Michael Porter Jr. to Missouri.
Mo Bamba to Texas.

Programs that missed NCAAs much less getting turnkey rings. So much for your theory.

Go figure.
