I'll quote you, "both reasons to have starters in the game the entire time". Since starters weren't in the game the entire time, your comment is now moot?

Yes, Cav did say that sometime prior to the season and he doesn't have 2 or 3 guys ready to rotate. As I said, Sterup is a prime example why there isn't a rotation. This isn't rocket science, if guys aren't ready, they don't play. If they're ready, they will play.

Patty cake? lmfao, you've watched poor OL play for a long time in Lincoln.

TBC, I'm 100% with you that back-ups should play x-number of series/snaps. I'm 100% for a 7 or 8-man rotation. However, it must be earned M-T or a bad message has been sent to the team.

So how does Cav's quote of "Never have and don't now" - which to me sounds like "never will", sit with you?

Still waiting... So how does Cav's record of producing all conference linemen the last 10 years at OSU sit with you?

NU's mid-90's run was characterized by substantial rotation in the OL. Aaron Taylor, Chris Dishman, and Jon Zatechka palyed all played a couple a series as back-ups when the game was still on the line. Aaron Taylor remembers getting chewed out by TO (in a TO type of way) because of getting blown up on a 3rd and short vs Mizzou. Something like, "I put you guys in to give the other guys a rest, and I expect you to do your job." Those are prime time back-ups to be sure. Dishman was allowed to get run over by Warren Sapp a few times in the '94 OB. They rotated less in '97 because the back-ups weren't ready, but Matt Hoskinson rotated regularly at center and both guard positions. My memory is that Tenopir always wanted quality depth and used it as an edge over opponents.

Congrats, dckc, you are the only person in this thread with an accurate memory. I watched the entire 1994 and 1995 seasons this summer, and it was common to see second-unit guys rotate into the game when the outcome still wasn't decided. Specifically, I remember seeing Brady Caskey (whom I had classes with) subbing in for Rob Zatechka (whom I graduated with from East) during the '94 season. But some won't let facts get in the way of a good argument.

One more thing, I would call that subbing, not rotating but that's semantics.
I think what people are concerned about is the lack of even a few snaps for game experience. Call it subbing if you want. This is the same concern frequently expressed for the qb position. Injuries are inevitable. Practices are not games. We can disagree.

I'm not calling for anyone's job. I'd rather deal with this year than a 9-4 year with embarrassing blowouts and equally embarrassing coach behavior on and off the field.

Long term, if we get to beating people fairly regularly, this will probably be more of an option (like it was in NU's heyday).

I think its fairly ridiculous at this point though, to be flaming on Cav for trying to develop a starting 5, and calling out comparisons to how NU did business in the 90's (when finding a starting five was not a huge issue). As Milt Tenopir, HTO and others have said, for the most part there wasn't a whole ton of rotation unless the game was in hand. NU clearly isn't in that situation now, so emulating that particular facet of the game is probably less likely an option.

Cav has clearly stated he wants to rebuild the Pipeline, but it still remains somewhat on the fan to recognize that we are *starting at where we are today*, the Pipeline is the *end point* and they are not the same points in time.

Interesting.. Does this represent both the coaches and media All Conference teams? I would hate to think that our Athletic Dept. is fudging on honors/awards.

Again, what you see here at Nebraska doesn't gel with what he produced at Oregon State. Why is that? Maybe, just maybe, he needs a little more time to get some talented guys in place before we say he sucks and should be fired.

Is this a response to me? I never stated that he should be fired or said he sucks. I have two issues with his performance. One, the obvious lack of physicality by the Oline and the emphasis of technique over attitude. Second, a lack of opportunity for younger players when a few in the starting 5 have struggled mightily. If we don't have anyone close enough to the starting 5 to play them, then that's on him also - he had all spring and fall to get these guys prepared and we only have 5 that are capable of playing in games?

So what was Zatecha's health situation in that game? Its all about the situation. Had he been up all night puking with the flu? Did we ever hear of Brad Caskey again? I would lay money that Zatechka was not 100% but we don't know. FWIW, "back in the day" Brad Johnson subbed regularly for Dave Rimmington at center but that's because Rimmington was playing without either ACL and Brad had actually started in front of him on the freshman team before Brad blew out his shoulder. Brad was also an NFL caliber lineman that went on to get drafted if I remember correctly in the 2nd round by the Browns. We don't have guys backing up our first 5 right now that are going to be drafted in the 2nd round by ANYBODY at least not as they sit right now. Some of the young guys may get there as they mature, but they aren't there now.

Response to OP mainly. Thread title says cavanaugh needs to go. Also meant for anybody who agrees with that sentiment. The reason I quoted you was because you said you were duped, leading me to wonder what you meant by that.

Taking the "I want him fired" card off the table, how does anyone say he's no good when he produced all conference players throughout his career at Oregon State of all places? I still haven't gotten a response to that question. This led me to say that maybe he needs a little more time...

Others smarter than me could probably answer this but would you agree that it's also easier from a conditioning standpoint with the offense we have now compared to our offense under Milt? A lot more pass pro now and a lot less pulling, trapping and running down field in general.
