Pretty brutal ranking for UK (not that it means anything in August). The silver lining is that they think less of several of our conference opponents. This poll also raises the possibility that UK loses its opener yet manages to win 3-4 SEC games, a scenario that few of us consider when counting possible wins during the offseason.

UK could beat Southern Miss and Southern Miss could end up with a better record. That ranking means nothing.

That ranking is going to look like a joke by the end of the year. My guess is that outside the top 25, very little actual research was done. I believe that UK is a very bad matchup for SMiss. Our strength in the secondary will offset their passing ability. It might be a shootout but UK will make enough stops to win this game.

So I guess Southern Miss would be battling Florida for 4th in the East according to this poll. This is giving way too much credit for beating really bad teams in a weak conference.

Attempting to rank all 128 teams is truly a Fool's Errand. But it is exceptionally foolish if it is not based on some statistical and analytic criteria. Was there any such basis to these CBS "rankings"? The CBS site is acting squirrelly right now so I can't check. However, I saw it last night and saw nothing but a "list" of all 128 teams with some associated "analysis". One can probably subjectively rank a "Top 25" with some degree of credibility (e.g., various weekly "polls") but those next 103 spots are pretty tricky!

FWIW (and really not that's not too much) I have found 3 sources that attempt to statistically rank all 128 teams for 2016, i.e.,:

Phil Steele Power Poll: UK #74 (USM #79 for comparison)
Bill Connolly S&P+: UK #83 (USM #72 for comparison)
ESPN FPI Index: UK #56 (USM #90 for comparison)

But those are projected seasonal rankings. As far as the USM game itself goes, Steel projects UK by about 9, Connolly UK by less than 1 (pick 'em) and ESPN has UK by about 8. The actual current betting spread is holding at UK -7.
