I find this excerpt from the article interesting:

In any case, the three-part evaluation process also will be used going forward to slot in what Mahoney and others hope will be new Catholic League schools. The aim is to make the process more data-driven, and therefore make the Catholic League more attractive to potential new members.

There's still one big hurdle to overcome, though, for expansion to happen: the mandated crossover games with the Blue powerhouses, especially for the smallest schools in the Red. "We've done a lot of mock schedules," Mahoney said. "Obviously, (limiting Red vs. Blue crossovers) is always our goal."

Sounds like the CCL is pursuing additional schools to join.

Well having a 6th team in Blue would have been ideal. Unfortunately, Montini declined. I ran through article but I think a potential similar set up to how the CMC was with inception in '96-with teams advancing every 2 years or dropped was brought up in a division. I love that. In fact, I love the SF-just think it should apply to all schools public and private ie Rochester should be 5A.

I do know they have looked at going to 2 divisions of 9 teams but then you are breaking up LA,MC,SR,PC,BR

The DVC 9 team problem was one that the ESCC had for a couple of years. It not only sucks to have to find the mid season game but to play a Non-Conference game late in the season can mess with a teams' focus.

Two thoughts:

1. The IHSA districting proposal would solve all this conference shopping/hopping/realignment baloney. If LA could be in the same district as NT, GBS, MS, ETHS and maybe Stevie, I would gladly say "See ya" to the CCL.

2. I am curious as to who Pat Mahoney thinks they can attract to the CCL with this new alignment. Marian Central already cast their lot with the ESCC, so I doubt they would jump again. There are not enough northside or north suburban schools in the CCL. I would love it if the CCL could attract ND, Carmel, Viator, and Pat's. I suppose you could go after Guerin, St. Ed's, IC and those other schools that just bolted to that weird public/private conference, but those schools would fill out the bottom two CCL divisions. Not a bad way to eliminate/lessen the need for crossovers, I guess. None of the above scenarios would serve to create a happy, six-school CCL Blue. To do that, the CCL would need to attract the top tier ESCC programs, and I just don't see that happening.

I am a proponent of keeping the Blue intact not going to 2 divisions. it gets the TV coverage ie tomorrow MC PC on, BR-LA on Sat. Nobody wants to be that 6th team unfortunately. In a perfect world Marist is the 6th team. Original Blue in CMC was MC,SR,BR.Marist,LA, and Marian. PC was in division with JC

Completely agree. Would love to see the RedHawks in the CCL. But, would they be welcomed by other CCL schools?

As I recall, Marist was none too keen with the old CMC arrangement. It wasn't easy being a Redskins fan back then and having to put up with the ballbusting taking place in the Western Ave saloons or in southside church vestibules and mens' club meetings after losing football games to the likes of Rita, Rice and MC.

I'm pretty sure Marist was one of the schools pushing to disband the CMC back then. But, things change. Back in the CMC days, Marist was an all-male school with an unfavorable enrollment trend line. Now, Marist is coed and is the second largest private school in Illinois.

The first Blue season in 96 Marist did really well-went 3-2 (losing to MC SR). after 97 Rice was dropped and PC advanced. After 99 Marist was going to be dropped and the Blue in 00 and 01 would have been MC, JC, PC, SR, LA, Marian

Why not the Blue? Didn't you rank Naz at #6 in the DSR? None of the Green schools want any part of the Blue. What makes you think the Green schools would want the team that you think is better than every other Blue team except LA and MC?

Because then you would have to criticize our crossover with Leo

One problem with the ESCC coed schools joining the CCL is that I think they're pretty happy with the girls and boys scheduling being set. Let us not forget that not all athletics decisions are based solely on football. The most likely teams to move would be ND and SP and those two teams have the longest ties to the ESCC.

Not a fan of the districts. It seems as if we're just getting out of that by going 1-32.
I am a fan of the out-of-state opponents.
It's quicker to go from Wilmette to Milwaukee than Wilmette to Kankakee.
If I were Fenwick, I'd go to the Blue and schedule Week 9 for St John Neumann in Naples or maybe Christopher Columbus in Miami.

Come back for the playoffs with tan lines.

Time for one of my rare posts. Not being a CCL guy like most of you, I'll do my best so here goes.

To me, the logical thing to do is not to add a team in the Blue or the Green. Those divisions seem to be just fine. IF you get LFA to join the IHSA, then you really only need 2 teams to fill out the bottom of the CCL. If you get two teams from a group of ACC, IC, St Ed, Chicago Christian, Walter Lutheran or Guerin out of the Metro to join the Red/White with LFA, then you have 2 10 team conferences with 2 5 team divisions in each one. You then schedule "crossovers" in your conference (between the Blue and Green and the White and Red). It would give you ZERO open dates. Some of the conferences are doing that now. But it does take away "great" crossover games like Leo vs MC and Rita vs St Joe!!!

This makes the most sense. I would imagine ACC, IC, St. Ed, Chicago Christian, Walter Lutheran or Guerin would be much more likely to join the CCL than any ESCC school. Plus, it would address the biggest problem of those one-sided crossover games between the Blue and Red or White teams.

Wouldn't Bolingbrook be a great fit for the DVC in all aspects? Size, geography, and competition level in all sports

The problem is there is too much diversity in the CCL (size of schools, success of programs, etc.) Another huge problem is that 5 schools in a division means there is no automatic playoff bid to the IHSA playoffs. So even if you have the 2 top divisions of 5 and playing three crossovers that second division (Green) could in theory not have a qualifier if they all get three losses in the crossovers and lose a non conference game or two. Fenwick for years has been the biggest pain int he rear for the CCL scheduling and realignment in football. Everyone in the conference agrees they are the best option to move up to the Blue (based on their size, tradition and success) to make it even but they threaten to bolt to the ESSC every time the subject is brought up as they want no part of the Blue Division.

Basically the CCL Blue Division is a vicitim of its own success. Even this past year Loyola supposedly asked for admission to the Central Suburban Conference when they had an opening when Waukegan left, the Central Suburban laughed at the them but Loyola's reasoning was strictly travel and football scheduling...having games forfeited like Hales or complete blowouts like DePaul Prep or St. Joes does nothing for the either schools.

There is too much diversity and schools dropping programs or even on the brink of closing to keep this thing from changing on a yearly basis

The problem for the DVC is there are no good options for schools since the West Suburban Conference is old and stable, there was a push to get Glenbard West to jump ship when they needed one school a few years back but they had no interest. I was really hoping the DVC would get Geneva & Batavia in the most recent go around since they are the right number and enrollment size.

The DVC schools took the Valley schools because they were the only option and now with 9 schools they are in a terrible spot. They way I see it is there is no way the DVC lasts in its current make up, I think Glenbard North is the next school to leave the conference since they have already explored it over the summer. If that happens I would think the Wheaton schools look at options too.

DVC-CCL Challenge? Add the Blue and Green, make it work schedule wise and off we go. Think of the fun of SF vs. WWS for starters.

A wild prediction here...Lake Park pulls out of the DVC, heads to the MSL. Hoffman drops out of the MSL and heads to the Upstate 8.

It gives the DVC and Upstate 8 even numbers. It balances out the MSL West better as well.
