5 seed isn’t a terrible place to be, maybe most years.

Projected matchups are meaningless but can be fun. The ACC runner up will likely drop. SMU could flip with Indiana easily, or slide lower. If Texas wins out, Georgia gets another L and slides some. Etc.

This model only exists for 2 years. It could stay the same or change after that.

I wonder if they may reseed rounds in the future.

Expansion to 14 is already written into the tv contract if they chose that as well.

Weekly rankings is part of the fun. They at least don’t release them until later in the season (early November area).

Discussion and debate is all part of the “show” and entertainment value.

I don't think it would happen but another way to make it a little harder for a 5 seed would be to make the 2nd round home games as well. They want those bigger bowls involved so it's not likely to happen but traveling up to Boise (or wherever) might not be such a picnic. It would also be another stamp on trying to get that bye and top 4 seed, an extra bonus.

Well that’s with the assumption that they’re 5 seed all the time. They could be any be any seed below that too. They were below it until the SEC and IU went down last weekend.

Actually if they lose to USC, I think it’s very possible they go from 5 to completely out of it depending on what else happens. Losses to NIU and a mediocre USC and a win over a 3 or 4 loss A&M might not be enough.

I think it was to avoid listening to the SEC argue EVERY year that their 2nd and 3rd teams are better than the other conference champions and should be seeded higher.

That is what led to spot 5 working out the way it did.

You’re arguing my point for me. We all know they’d love Notre Dame and Alabama in every year. If ND ends up the #5 this year, that would be about 4-5 straight years Notre Dame, Alabama or another SEC team would get the 5 seed and an easy path to the final four

No, that’s not what I am arguing at all. ND made the 4 team playoff over champions from conferences other than the SEC.

They are NEVER getting spot number 5 as a one loss team with their schedule over the second best SEC or B1G team.

The literal CFP is confirming the SEC/Big Ten teams ARE better and should he seeded higher by ranking them higher.

That's why this is the dumbest designed playoff possible.

The larger format diminishes the meaning of the result of a game. That has always been the counterpoint, and it is still true.

Of course the more teams you invite, the more fan bases will care (higher TV ratings).

It’s two different viewpoints of what is important. I think it would be a shame if Bama or Ole Miss were to be provided an opportunity at this point to become champion. I’m sure others find it perfectly acceptable.

The ticket revenue all goes to the CFP. The CFP actually set the prices for tickets. (Students $25, Regular tickets were $100-$250) The hosting school only gets parking and concessions revenue. After you factor in all the expenses I don’t think it will be a huge windfall for the hosting schools.

Edit: I totally screwed this up. Clemson would still make the CFP as the 5th ranked Conference Champ.
However, they could still be ranked and seeded below fellow ACC teams.

Dream scenario:
Clemson barely beats SMU.
AU or ISU win in close game.
Boise State beats UNLV.

#17 Clemson stays ranked behind #15 AU/#16 ISU winner and ACC Champion gets left out as 6th highest ranked champion.

AU/ISU winner stay ranked behind Miami.
SMU presumably drops out and Miami moves up to #11 - putting them in the CFP as the 12-seed.

So the ACC Champ gets left out while a non-champ game Miami gets put in!
