So…..confirmation of what we already knew. Everyone knew the farce that was the 9-12 seeds in the playoff.

You’re pushing here. You’re just wanting to believe a dumb narrative. You assume if you replaced them, they would have been any better. You are also forgetting and overlooking that the two highest-viewed games were traditionally in the prime time spots, 8:00.

Also the earlier games competed with nfl games. There wasn’t an 8 nfl game. All of that drives numbers down.

CFP numbers are never going to beat NFL numbers. This is a big nothing burger.
Playoffs versus regular season? This isn’t NFL playoffs versus college football playoffs. Wouldn’t call it a nothing burger.

Yeah, NFL is King. Nothing beats the NFL in TV viewership.

The NFL always outdraws college football, especially when you've got blowout games stuck on TNT going against NBC and FOX on a random weekend before Christmas. Despite the negatives, these games were still near the top of the college football viewership list for the season.

You are right that nothing beats NFL viewership, but that is largely because ESPN and the networks will make sure nothing does.

How many college football games did you watch on TNT this year? I watched exactly two and I'm pretty sure that's the only two TNT showed this year. Why would ABC/ESPN pay billions for the right to broadcast CFP games only to sell those two to TNT? And why wouldn't any of the networks have bid on those games? I am certain that anyone who gets a piece of the NFL pie (to include all 4 networks, ESPN, and the streaming services) have to agree to never broadcast any meaningful college football games opposite an NFL game.

ESPN sold the rights to a couple games to recoup some of the money expended on the rights deals. Being able to sublicense games was part of the new deal with the CFP.

I don't think the NFL has any such requirement. The college football broadcast isn't going to be legitimate competition to the NFL, so the broadcaster isn't going to want to put it up against the NFL.

Not concerning this particular version of this iteration. It's deeply flawed, undone by its criteria for inclusion.
well, so far the only team (Clemson) who was included as the AQ gave a very good account of itself.
Just sayin.

Wash that criterion out altogether. It is the enemy of impartiality. Got to get the computers involved to minimize error.

Maybe we'll never know because it's a chicken-egg question. But I do think the NFL is very careful about its television package and how it structures it. Everybody (all the networks) has a piece of the pie, so it's in all of their interests to make sure NFL ratings are as strong as possible. They'll put NBA games, World Series games, and other sports up against the NFL (even though they pay a lot for those rights as well), but never a P4 college football game, for some reason.

That's the only way to go to get it right. The ''Committee'' functions like a bunch of bought and paid for career politicians.

Most of the NFL teams in the Southeast aren't very competitive this year, so I'm surprised that "NFL is King" in the Southeast.

I'm not sure what the breakdown looks like per region, but overall NFL and college football viewer totals aren't close.

The best college games have the same viewership as a regular NFL game: the most-watched college game this year was the SEC championship with just under 17 million viewers. NFL games average about 17 million viewers this year.

The fact that the college football playoffs have thus far beaten prior college football games including the best of bowl and conference championship games in the TV ratings, vindicates expansion of college playoffs. The NFL is a different animal.

College football simply needs to adopt merit for selection and seeding. I'm sure they will after the 2-year contract is up. The college football playoffs are proving to be popular with the sport's masses, as the Big Dance college basketball tournament has been. How anyone can be surprised at the popularity is surprising.

It was part of the settlement for TNT suing ESPN and the streaming networks for taking the NBA away from them. ESPN threw TNT this bone to make them go away. It was still ESPN broadcasters and production crew. The games were just thrown onto TNT to satisfy the parameters of the settlement.

Everyone tuned in at the start then changed channels once the games were blow outs. I know I did.
