Can it be! This would mean MS is resigning, right?

Manny D would be a good hire. He stepped into a bad situation at Texas.

Riley might do on a limited time basis, that would give him time to get who he wants.

I hope not but you could be right if Riley’s man isn’t available right now. But you would think that Lincoln would have been putting a plan together. It’s not like he knew that Mike was going be his DC long term. I would not be surprised that Riley was talking to/about potential staff since June. He should have been.

I'm willing to bet that Coach Riley already had in mind who he wanted for Def coordinator. I'd love to see him poach Brent Venables away from Clemson.

It’s possible I guess but MS contract expires in one year. If Riley’s ‘guy’ isnt Available and/or not selected just yet I would think that MS would just finish his contract. But we could be witnessing the reason why Ruffin was brought on board..... a stop gap. But change is definitely coming.

WNAS, you are one of my favorite posters, but if you could be wrong only more time EVER, I hope it’s this time. OU can’t take another year of Mike Stoops running the defense. If OU will have to pay his contract, so be it. But for God’s sake, take the high road, place him in a dark room somewhere within the biology department, pay him and save some other school from making a mistake hire for one more year. One day Sooner Appreciation Day will be recognized universally during football season as a result of OU’s contribution to humanity.

Would we want Venables back? He had his struggles too and we bitched about him a lot...

There has to be more than 2 or 3 guys who can be our DC...

No on Venables, he is overrated in my opinion. I believe Venables next stop will be a HC position somewhere. A few weeks ago a lot of lil piggies fans wanted him as their next HC. Not sure if they offered but if they did he was smart to turn them down. I doubt he leaves Clemson for anything other than a HC position thats a good fit for him.

I understand that several people wouldn't want him back, but I sure would like to have him back. Wish he wouldn't have left. I think he does a very good job with the defense.

Most OU fans have been wanting Mike Stoops removed for over a year now.
A new defensive direction is needed, otherwise the program will remain a perennial “close but no cigar” team.
Any OU fan knows changes are needed....now.
I believe the time between mid-February to the start of Spring drills in March will see these changes.

Brent seems to have grown as a solid coach with Dabo Sweeney settling him down. He is a different coach these days. I think getting him back would be a big step in the right direction.
Agree and Venables is obviously recruiting well for defensive players.
I have always thought that Mike Stoops was at least a reason why Venables left OU. Just a thought.

Mike should call his old neighbor chum at Youngstown State. Bo may be the only head coach that will tolerate Mike’s sideline attics. :p

Venables was great, he just had to fight Bob for a front 7 philosophy over a back 7. When Mike came back, it became to much to overcome. Bob and Mike will take a chance on a 5'9 DB or a 215lb hybrid safety, that's to slow to play safety and not big enough to play LB but has poor tackling of a DB, over a Dlineman. The BigXII spread, has change our defense but it all starts upfront. Mike Stoops lines about how we do not understand, is him trying to sale, the back 7, over the front 7.

OU best defenses were when we had a strong front 7. The Stoops brothers always wanted speed, over size. DB are not the best tacklers on the defense and I think it spread to the rest of the guys.

Other than Tito Windham in 2014, what other DB's were 5'9" ?
Who were the "hybrid" safeties converted to LB ?

Not sure about the safeties to LB, but there have been plenty of Outside linebackers brought in to try and play middle. Kenneth Murray being the latest.

I look at Alabama's defense and they are good in the front end and the back end. I wonder why OU can't be good at both ends?

I know that high school football especially the level I coach at is a lot different than Division I football, but the best defenses I have ever had were really good up front and a really good middle linebacker.

Latest, and he's turned out OK. Trey Norwood showed up 5'9 147lbs. Then, Beal, to small for LB and to slow for safety.
