I hope it isn't the guy that is on the front page of this site. The former Nebraska defensive coordinator. Living in Nebraska I saw a lot and heard a lot about that guy. In my opinion it would be 2 steps backward from Mike.
IF... it is him... LOL... I'll take some of the Notre Dame defense. Bottomline, it appears that Riley is at least doing something. And at this point, something is better than nothing & 'nothing' has been around too long.
He's only had one or two really good defenses at Notre Dame. His defense at Nubby was terrible last year. Add in the weird quotes by him and I'd rather have Mike Stoops. I'm no Mike Stoops fan either. I would love to get Mike out of here.

I read where Caleb Kelly is moving from the strong side LB to weak side LB. I guess the coaches are moving Kelly to get some other guys (Curtis Bolton?) on the field. Outside of that, I've not heard of any other moves involving players and/or coaches.
I'm guessing that something is going to happen or Diaco's picture wouldn't be on the front page.
Bob Diaco was horrible as head coach at UConn, even by UConn's football standards. He was in way over his head. He came across as an energetic, articulate and knowledgeable guy but his body of work sucked. A coach needs at laest 4 years to turn a program around in most cases, but Diaco's decision making on so many fronts was too problematic for continuing his time at UConn.
While the talent level was below that of a top 30 team, Diaco's in-game and coaching decisions were poor and his teams were getting blown out regularly. The offenses were some of the worst in FBS history.
Time and again, Diaco would proclaim his teams played competitively and were having fun, even after blowout losses.
This doesn't mean his hiring at OU is a bad one....and with Riley in charge it's hard to say it is....Diaco's body of work at Notre Dame was good and he won the 2012 Broyles Award as the top assistant in CFB. Given the talent he has before him at OU, like the talent he had at Notre Dame, Diaco could have a lot of success in Norman.

After watching his train wreck in Lincoln last fall I doubt he can turn anything around. He had one or two good years at Notre Dame, other than that he was pretty average there as well.

I live in the heart of Huskirt nation. They hated Diaco as much as we do MS. I always hope there's more to the story and don't mind giving people 2nd chances. Let's hope there's some good in Diaco and this is a situation where he can shine again.

Diaco runs a 3-4. I like the 3-4 defense, just don't always agree with how Mike Stoops runs the 3-4. In my opinion we need to get better players at the Nose and 6 technique. In my opinion our biggest problem is that we don't have the jimmy's and joe's, which comes down to recruiting by Mike Stoops and Tim Kish.
So we get two mediocre defensive minds to brainstorm? Hardly live wires ...more like downed power lines.
We are OU, Blood Blood, top of College Football food chain. We do not need to settle, for average or 2nd chance guys. OU can and has got the best of the best. Bob Stoops saw LR and knew his potential. Now is the time to bring in a BIG name defensive coordinator and not settle for anything less.

I won't throw Diaco under the bus at this time, even with my reservations about him....so I'm not going to play the "resident coach" here and say he's a bad hire.

After giving up 55 points to Georgia in a playoff game last January, I've had it with the arena football defenses that OU keeps producing. I don't know if Diaco can do anything to change that culture here.

He is definitely a 3-4 ( 5-2 ) guy. From what I'm hearing it'll be Kelly/will and Murray/Mike with Gumbs or Draper at the Jack and Jones or Jackson on the other side.

I live in Nebraska as well. The people I teach and coach with in northeast Nebraska really hated Diaco and Mike Riley. These same people talked really bad about Mark Banker who was their DC when Riley first came to Nebraska and they really hated Kevin Cosgrove who was the DC when Callahan was head coach. They disliked Diaco more than those two morons. Diaco is a weird dude and I'm afraid all he's going to do is confuse our defensive players even more. One of my former players played for Nebraska in the late 90's and early 2000's. He said that the best thing that could have happened to Nebraska football was getting rid of the entire staff they had the last 3 years.
For the 2017 season, out of 129 D1 teams, the Bugeaters were ranked 115th in scoring defense and 100th in total defense. These numbers were posted against non-conference powerhouses such as 6 loss Oregon (Nebby gave up 42 and lost), Arkansas State (gave up 36 and won), and Northern Illinois (gave up 21 and lost).
As for their B1G schedule, 5 loss Iowa had their highest output against Diaco's defense: 56 points. Ohio State scored 56 twice in the season; once against Diaco and once against mighty Rutgers. How's that for a comparison? Wait, there's more. Penn State scored 56 against Nebby, their 2nd highest output of the year, (4-8 Maryland was their highest). Want more? 7 loss Minnesota scored 54 against them, which was their highest output of the year,
So, he absolutely sucked at Nebraska.
Before that, he had the worst career winning percentage since 1910 at Connecticut.
So yeah, I knew about the Broyles Award. I also know that even a blind hog finds an acorn every once in a while. If you look at the list of all of the Broyles Award winners, you'll see that it doesn't mean much in the long run. There are as many busts as there are booms, so all that means is he had good year at a school that has a good PR department. Sometimes the stars align and you just happen to be there when it happens.
The good news is that this move is most likely just more of the "good ol' boy from Iowa nepotism", and they're just creating a "job" for him until he can find a real one.
