Anybody ever had success changing a reservation without paying a fee? Trying to bump my departure date up of a roundtrip flight and the airline wants to charge $500 for this. I could buy a one way for $130, any advice is appreciated

It's an omen. You weren't meant to be on the other flight. Heed the warning and don't book it. Drive if you have to.

Which airline are you using OP? Sounds like they're charging you the basic change fee, plus the difference in prices from the original flight to the new flight.

We changed flight times on Delta flying from New Orleans to Nashville. They actually refunded us $35 a piece. I don't know why, but they did.

American, obviously I would buy the on way for $130 instead of paying the change fee and difference which would be $500

Easy fix Blat. Just find $500 in counterfeit money and tell them you want to pay in cash for the upgrade.

In all seriousness.....if you buy the one way ticket on another airline for a departure on an earlier day, your original airline will basically void your ticket when you don't show up for the outbound portion and chances are you will not be able to use your return ticket,.....I speak from past experience with this.

If you can get a roundtrip ticket 130.00 each way, for the dates you want to travel, I would say do that and then contact your current airline telling them you will not be able to make this trip and they "should" give you a credit (not a refund) to use on a future flight with that airline.

Hope that helps.

They'll still deduct the "change fee"...typically $200/ticket from your future travel voucher.

True, Ive gotten lucky a few times where if the fare I'm using it for is slightly cheaper than what I originally paid then they have waived the fee. But if the fare is more then yes they have lopped on the change fee.

As with most airline policies....they are as arbitrary as the come

UPDATE: I am going to stick with the original itinerary. I appreciate all of the replies and will consider the advice for the next time I run into this situation.
