For those here who smoke a lot ...do you have any advice on buying cheap cigs. My MIL and my wife go thru about 5 packs a day. Not much chance either is quitting even with Drs. warnings. Dropping north of $9k a year and would like to get some relief... thanks in advance!

The hell you're gonna go through taking care of them when they’re on oxygen and wheelchair or bed ridden and chemo and watching the suffering has me feeling bad for you buddy. Watched it happen to many times and it hurts. I’d say leave now but I get the feeling you won’t. I’ve heard people roll with machines and loose tobacco for less than a dollar a pack. Good luck to you the rest of your life. I mean that sincerely!

According to Google 20 cigs in a pack and it takes an average of 5 minutes to smoke 1 cig. So assumimg they split the 5 packs evenly at 50 that is over 4 hours a day smoking. Over the course of a year that is over 60 days of smoking and over 16% of your life is spent with a cigarette in your hand.

That privides no help, but good god.

9K per year is pre-tax at least isn't it?

I'd take out your own $9,000/year and spend it on your vices..

Or just flat out leave her. Can you imagine the gall of that women to get on your *** about ****.. and she's spending that money on cigs? I swear, only females could pull that.

The OPs family smoking five packs of cigs a day was the lock of the century
In all seriousness, back in the 80's my parent probably put that to shame and they are both alive at 81 and 74. You could smoke pretty much everywhere. I think I remember dad smoking 4 packs a day. Half of them probably burned out in the ashtray while he concentrated on other things. They weren't $5 a pack then either.
I had an aunt and uncle that lived in NYC and when they would come visit us it KY they would bring an empty suitcase so they could buy cigarettes here.
Neither of my parents have smoked a cigarette in over 30 years and I haven't since 2 days after we lost the championship game to Arizona in 1997.

These used to be really cheap. Might ruin your teeth though.

No way this is true. No sane person would marry in to this train wreck.

Wasn't always like this...knew wife smoked, but not a lot. MIL quit for 17 years , but started back after her husband died and because she is blind she now lives with us to keep her out of nursing home. She is going on 81.

Chantix, stuff WORKS.

Had to have surgery about 11 months ago. My doctor told me to QUIT, and called in an RX of Chantix. I took it as directed, and at the end of 1 month, I was done; I've been smoke free for almost a year now and will NEVER, EVER start that nasty, expensive habit again.
I would strongly encourage your wife to try Chantix OP because it works.

It wasn't always this way. I guess inflation drove cigarettes up from Five Cents a pack to where they are now. I have never smoked and would not date girls that did. I will give you a true story in my life. I had been married about 2 years and my wife brought in the grocery and since I was in the kitchen I helped her put up the groceries. In the grocery sack I found a pack of "Virginia Slims". This company was marking cigarettes for women and my wife decided she wanted to try them. I took the cigarettes and threw them across the room and said it is me or the cigarettes. Your choice.

Now you say that was cruel and you shouldn't treat a 22 year old woman like that. But I had seen my aunts and uncles coughing their head off and several of them eventually died at too young of an age. I did not want my wife to go through that. That was the last pack of cigarettes she bought and she has thanked me many times for showing her tough love. Next April is our 53rd wedding anniversary and she is still very attractive with very few wrinkles and good healthy lungs and heart. When we finally leave this earth it will not be because of cigarettes. .

Never a smoker, but recall buying cartons for out of town friends at $2.50-$3.00 in early 70's.
When I was a student at UK the cigarette companies gave them away free. They were dispensed in little four packs and they were available for the taking. Also when I went into the army at our initial issue of boots and gear they gave you a cartoon of cigarettes. Since i didn't smoke I gave mine to the recruit behind me. He appreciated it.

Carbon monoxide via a hose from your tailpipe into your car's interior is a lot cheaper and will get the job done quicker -- that way you and your spouse's jobs will become available for millennials struggling to pay off the student loans they took out for their diverse ethnic cultures degree. YWIA.

Simple solution and like the old saying goes "and profit." Take out a real nice insurance policy on both. The best available. Let them smoke their life away, then collect the check(s). Make sure you turn in "occasional" smoker on the application just to be on the up and up.

That's one habit I'm glad I didn't inherit from my parents. Almost everybody in my family either smokes or used to smoke. I was lucky that I never developed that habit.

Try to talk your wife and MIL into cutting back or maybe a cigarette alternative. They will thank you later.

Patches, ecigs, Chantax ...done it all. Just cut back to a half pack a day a piece is all I'm asking at this point. Been there.

That’s interesting and mind blowing, thanks for sharing. Good reminder to those that say big companies own politicians and the govt now - always have.

Started smoking at age 14, quit a few times over the years for a few months. It is the hardest habit to break IMO. Happily, I kicked it in 2003. Been smoke free now for 16 years, the longest period in my life.

Laying down the cigs is one of the hardest things to do. It's definitely possible, but it's very difficult.

I've done it several times and then picked it back up again. Getting ready to quit again once I see the doc and get a scrip for Chantix. This will be my 3rd time using Chantix. It worked the previous two times, so I expect similar results this time.

Also, I completely dismiss any advice from people that have never smoked before on how to quit.

Admit I've never smoked...nasty habit!! As I've gotten older I hate it more...smoke elimination candles work well along with an air purifier.
