Chin gave a pretty good overview of the D in terms of players and the different position groups. Looking to be able to always play a good three on the DL, so guys like Carlos and maybe the elder Daniels will have to play both DE and NT. So there could be lots of different combos up front. Davis twins plus Darrion, Daniels brothers and Stille, etc. It seems Jojo will swing between being at OLB against spread teams and a big safety against run heavy B1G teams.

Hopefully year two will bring that leap forward from guys understanding the mental side of things. They should have nice depth on the d-line. Somebody needs to step up in the linebacking corps to go along with Mo Berry. He could be in for a monster year, what a breakout season he had.

Good d line play is the linebikers best asset. Free the dogs.

I’m not going to disregard Deontre Thomas with the Davis and Daniels brothers either...

Hopefully they have Khalil Davis on the End. He will tear it up 1-1 with a Tackle I’m hoping?

Stille and Deontre will be involved. What Chin was saying was that the mix of players requires that some of the guys would have to swing between NT and DE. I would say Carlos and both of the Daniels brothers will be playing the nose. That allows for a lot of different combinations. As long as they stay healthy, I would say that the Davis twins and the elder Daniels will be in line for a lot of snaps this season. Stille will also play a lot of the younger Daniels will play at nose. If he's in better shape and takes his play up a level, he could be hard to take off the field. Tony T. said he's the kind of guy who requires 4 hands from the opposing Oline due to his size.

The Davis twins have underperformed at NU. Hopefully the new coach will light a fire under them. I don't have high hopes, but one never knows.

For the past two seasons, the primary job of the Davis twins has been to occupy blockers. They would be a better fit for a 4-3. They now have over a year with Duval plus a season of experience in a defensive system. I think the addition of Darrion Daniels will help them.

It's not size and strength, but a matter of athletic ability, or they were told to play patty cake with the opposing OL.

Regardless of how the d performs this fall, I think we probably have the best defensive coordinator we've had at NU since McBride retired. I think he's a very bright guy who relates very well to his players and they are going to bust their butts for him. I'm very excited about the long term progress we're going to make.

By looking at the picture yesterday from the group with new lines Coach Tuioti, it looks like they worked hard in the weight room and looking forward to getting back to having stronger defensive line...

That will help for sure. If was every play last year. I don't know if we can get that much ground or not by fall.

Bo Pelini was probably the best of that bunch, although he wasn’t a good head coach. I think the jury is still out on Chinander. Hopefully he’ll turn out to be the best.

Yeah maybe....Bo's defense looked terrific at times in the BigXII. But vs the smashmouth Big10 not so much.

As others have said - major concerns at LB

We’ve got one guy that is a proven big ten LB

still big question marks for Miller, Honas, and JoJo.

Um no. Pelini may have known alot about defense but he couldn't effectively teach it to his players. Our defense was a hot mess when he didn't have NFL talent to clean up all the mistakes.

Who was better than him as a DC after McBride? That was what I was responding to. He was decent in 2003 and the competition is pretty weak.

Anyone notice Tate Wildeman and Daishon Neal missing from the group pic? I hope they’re healthy.
They got a lot of options for essentially three spots. I sure hope they can make a jump from last year, and I feel good about that being likely.
Just not sure if the ceiling for this group is that high.

I agree LB has question marks, esp. for quality depth, but we got options and I feel pretty good about a lot of the guys we got despite being relatively unproven.

The issue I had last year was the defenses uncanny ability to give up first downs on 3rd and 4th and long. In fact there was 4 games where we gave up 3rd or 4th and over ten yards that if the defense stopped them we won the game - 8-4 would have been a great year and that was possible with just being average on those downs. I think they will get that fixed this year

They were recruited for, and are better fits, in s 4-3

The last two years NU has been trying to play 3-4 with a 4-3 roster in the front seven

His defense looked good until it had to rely on players he recruited. Then it started giving up 6,743,891 yards on the ground per game against teams with a pulse.

I am not sure it was just the players - he had David,couple of NFL DT's and Crick plus Will Compton, Gregory - There was plenty of talent on those teams to perform better than they did at times on Defense. Bo got absolutely owned against power running teams that did not give up on the run. There were no teams in the Big12 that did that. His problem was lack of flexibility on defense

He had some good individual players (not enough of them), but had serious holes on the roster when it came to defense.
