I'm not an X's and O's expert, nor have I even looked at the stats.

But we were relatively thin at LB coming into the season, and losing Nate Hall could have been a serious blow to that unit. To my eye, Chris Bergin has been in the right position, quick to the ball, and generally a pretty competent tackler. He's a nice example of what I often refer to as the Kyle Hendricks Effect* - good teams aren't good because of their stars, because most teams generally have a few stars sprinkled throughout their rosters. They're good because guys who are mid-roster, or bench depth, or young and not expected to play much, step up their play when given an opportunity to shine.

Keep it up, Chris "Kyle" Bergin.

(*For those wondering why, it's my personal opinion that Hendricks set the 2016 Cubs apart because Lester and Arrieta were established stars, and Hammel and Lackey were established solid veterans, but Hendricks becoming a third ace in that rotation as opposed to a #5 starter made that team's pitching staff so damn good.)

Dude, Hendricks led the league in ERA. He was a star.

Chris has been solid, but I really hope Nate Hall is health for this upcoming 3 game stretch. LBs have been the weakness for our D since he went down. Paddy has regressed from a great freshman year and Blake still makes freshman mistakes. We miss Hall's playmaking capability.

Haha, that's exactly the point: good performances from unexpected sources. Of course there are degrees. I picked Hendricks to name the phenomenon for a reason.

The reality is, if Bergin (and Gallagher, too, but I wanted to highlight Bergin because he's a walk-on and he's directly replacing Hall) were playing at a lesser level, we'd be in big trouble.

Based on literally nothing but my own guess, I think Hall might be done pending a possible medical redshirt next year and Fitz just didn't want to admit it for a couple weeks. He's off the depth chart this week for the first time. They were checking his previously-injured knee in a non-contact context when he went down. That's not good.

I think Gallagher has stepped it up big time, he's been our leading tackler in most of our games.

Bergin has been excellent filling in for Hall, better than expected. I hope Hall can return, but I share the sense of doom that GCG stated. Hoping for the best.

Agreed. Noticed he was off the depth chart too. Maybe it's nothing, but it's certainly not a good thing.

not even close to what Hall was. Salvageable but lots of getting plowed out of the way. "Needs work" although better than our avg second teamer. And better than the oldtime starters linke C Emmerick

You really can be insufferable at times...guy posts kudos to an unheralded walk-on who is busting his *** and getting the job and you manage to piss on the parade. Sometimes it's better to not post anything at all.

Yawn. So turk of you. I guess Bergin was named Defensive Playmaker of the Week for getting plowed out of the way. LOL.

I talked to Hall's mom on the way into the stadium. She said "maybe next week."
That's also what Fitz apparently said a couple of weeks ago. It would be such a NU thing to remove a guy from the two-deep on the week he finally returns to the field. IIRC, Vault wasn't on the two-deep at all the week of the Michigan game, and he then got a lot of work at RB that game.

Hall was shown walking on the practice field during the latest episode of The Foundation so I'm still hopeful. We really need him back for these next 3 games!

That's why I said in the other thread that there's no point in paying attention to the 2 deep for predicting the following week's game, they clearly don't use it for anything other than misdirection.

Please, comments like this make me wonder about what objects might be obstructing certain orifices. All I did was agree the kid was solid and didn't piss on his parade at all in underscoring the need for our best LB and playmaker to return for a critical stretch. Read Mr. Wickerpark's post, and then read mine. Who is pissing on the parade? Why pick on me?

Let's face it, we need Hall back there. That's all I'm saying.

Be careful, you may be pissing on someone's parade.

The way Hanks sets up the defense, it is very easy for any of the linebackers to play well. If you know the playbook you will be in position to make tackles. Hanks basically makes everyone look good Best coach in the B1G

Look, you want to make this guy All World then fine but he and our LBs are clearly the weakest link.

Hint: There is a reason why Other teams are running on us since Hall's injury.
Bergen has played better than I thought he would as he has proven he belongs but if Hall comes back Bergen wont see the field.

What is sad isnt me giving the kid props for overachieving, but you and other kool aid drinkers that see a kid make 12 tackles against playoff contending Rutgers and you want to annoint him the next Barry Gardner.

I really hope Hall comes back. Nothing against Bergen.

Don't be a dope. Bergin had a nice game and deserves the compliments, starting from his own head coach. We all hope Hall comes back, but don't need to **** on Bergin. And his name isn't that hard to spell, easier than Hanaoka who you insulted more than once.

Any thoughts on Peter McIntyre? He's listed on the two-deep (I know, I know) but don't know if he even got any reps.

He was dressed and part of the travel squad to Rutgers. Did not see him on the field. Rivers and Khalid Jones as well.

Our LB corps is taking a beating this year. The backups are McIntyre, Mueller, and Rivers. Not a lot of reps among those three. We need Hall back ASAP. Thank goodness that Bergin has stepped up.

It is Hudetz, McIntyre, and probably McGee would play Sam if Hall and Bergen out

This also gets to the recent discussion about depth on the team now versus in recent years. At LB, NU has now apparently lost to medical retirement: Quiero, Vitale, Jango, and Fox, with Hall also missing multiple games due to injury. That's a big hit, and yet the guys on the field are playing well, and there are still some young pups who can be called on if needed. In years past, a similar situation might have been a disaster.

Hanks makes it to where any intelligeht player can fill in. Hanks has every player knowing where they need to be You don't actually need to be skilled to play on Hanks defense,. You just need to know the playbook, calls and formations With Hanks it is truly next man up
