I don't remember anyone really wanting Obi that bad. I believe it was more so Dent, than Magoon, and then Demary as the 3 big ones, along with watching several others get snatched up.

Also, lol @ watching some of these media pundits try to cover up all their mistakes. Maybe if people like Chris weren't making false Crystal Ball picks or their stone cold locks, this wouldn't have been a problem in the first place.

Obi could have played here and been great. Anyone that watched his videos and knows basketball could see it. The other stuff that coaches get from personal interviews we will never know.

2,000 players, and only about 50 of them are Final Four caliber starters.

Are we looking to add more role players, Chris, or are we chasing a championship run here?
My man, you are one of my all-time favorite posters, but you do need to relax.

Trust Dr. Bucs.

Here’s your prescription for what ails you.

Grab your best bottle of bourbon.

Grab you a clean glass.

Fill said glass about two fingers deep with said bourbon.

Sip until the glass is empty.

Repeat until you don’t care if we ever sign another player again.

I got semi roasted for bringing up the negative impact UK media has on recruiting but there's some obvious smoke.

It doesn't look good from a program perspective when crystal balls and picks are getting thrown out and an about face happens. Basically, they need to keep a lid on things until finalized bc credibility is being lost.

We all love to have info and share it but leaks before things are a done deal are causing unnecessary panic. BBN draws so much attention, I'll be surprised if the staff doesn't intentionally keep their cards close to the chest to avoid any further negative effects.

Im not concerned on missing random joes. Im concerned because we missed a few guys when we went all in. Last year, despite the tight time frame, pope got pretty much everyone he wanted.

The other part that concerns me is who we pivoted to. The guy from IU cannot be someone we depend on for major production, yet here we are AND poised to have to pay him nearly 1 million.

Ament isnt coming. No need to hold back any nil for him. Just wasting time.

There is still plenty of time but I don't see us being able to afford someone in this market that will be a difference maker. The only chance whatsoever is take aments money and load it into one guy. Even then you have Perry having to play backup and he just isnt ready.

Yeah, Agbim is the 24th ranked portal guy now, but out of the 23 that are ranked ahead of him, how many are guards and of those guards, how many of them are better at the things Pope is looking for to play in this system?
For the guys Pope is looking for, Agbim is rated way higher than 24th.

Agree that it’s silly to be angry at this point. Anxious sure. But lots of time. Let’s see how it plays out. Many of the top transfers last year busted so these rankings mean little. I am hopeful we still can bring in a top 10 transfer class. If we do that’s solid and should give us a chance to have a really good team. If it’s best class or bust then I guess maybe be upset

People just need to push the pause button on their panic attacks. NIL has created a LOT more parity and opportunities for these guys. To say there are only about 50 final four caliber starters in the portal is ludicrous, and the woe is us, "we can't compete" nonsense needs to stop too. We had a final four caliber roster this year, with the guys we had. Injuries derailed much of that. But when last years roster was assembled, I don't think too many had Oweh as being our best player. Hell i don't think anyone was even penciling him in as a starter. I think most figured that would be Butler, Brea, Robinson, WIllams and Carr and that Oweh would come off the bench. Got to let this all play out.

Lets look at the SEC alone.
Six teams have zero portal commitments. (Vandy, aTm, Oklahoma, Florida and Arkansas and Tenn.)
Seven teams have just one committment. (UK, Texas, Ole Miss, Miss. St., UGA, Auburn, Alabama)
Only three teams have two or more (Missouri (2), LSU (3), South Carolina (4)

The two teams with the most were the worst teams in the league, and LSU is losing four guys to the portal. Georgia has lost three guys to the portal but only added one so far.

People just need to stop with the panic. There's still a lot of time and there are still players who will enter and be available later due to testing the NBA draft waters.

Sometimes I think people won't be happy unless we have the top two players at each position locked up the day they enter the portal, all the while failing to realize those rankings are fluid and constantly changing with every new player who enters the portal.

On 24/7 Agbim is now ranked the 13th best guard. Where is this mythical portal ranking of players that best fit Popes system?

More reason not to push the panic button.

Current team portal rankings

We are ranked 19th overall, and the fourth best of teams with only one commitment. The only teams with multiple commitments ahead of us that we really even need to worry about is Louisville. LSU is ranked as high as they are because they have three commits, but they are also losing four guys so they don't concern me much. South Carolina has four commits but are ranked lower than LSU because a couple of their commits are trash, so they don't concern me much either. There are still a boatload of players that we are in on that have yet to commit to anybody. The myth all the good ones are being snatched up already is stupid.

There is no mythical ranking system. I wasn't saying anything negative, just saying Agbim and Dent would have been really good pieces in this 5 out offense and obviously Pope thinks so too, he tried to get both of them.
So if there is a mythical ranking, it's on Pope's white board.

But that doesn't mean that out of the couple of thousand guys in the portal, those are the only two or even the top two that would fit his system the best. Yeah, Dent would have been nice, but it's hard to lure a kid away from his home, when his home school is courting him too. Dent would likely be ours if UCLA had said, "nah, we're good", but they didn't and he chose to go where he can be close to family.

Are you saying that of the 13 guys in front of Agbim on the guard list that none are a better or equal fit?

I want who Pope and the staff want, just on my schedule. Too many entries for me to learn about them all. Just ready to see the pieces fall into place.

We may end up with a GREAT portal class . It’s still relatively early. And I still have ultimate confidence in CMP and his staff .But the thinking that CMP had targets lined up that were going to be entering the portal was obviously wrong. Maybe the Williams kid . And we may get a great point guard. But it sure doesn’t seem like filling that position is going to any sort of “plan”. Looks more like we’re scrambling to me .

You're not saying anything I disagree with. Question.is, why are you stating the obvious, while seemingly disagreeing with me?

All I'm saying is, yes, Agbim is rated 24th overall, bit for what CMP is looking for, there certainly isn't 23 players that are a better fit. That's all I was saying.

I am seemingly disagreeing with all the people on here that seem to get butthurt over missing out on certain players not even two weeks into the portal, when there are literally 2000 plus guys in the portal. and yes, I think, when all is said and done, there very well may be 23 guys who are a better or equal fit. Look at the Princeton PG who just entered today. Now who knows what our chances are with him, or if he will choose to stay in the draft, but him, and Pierre are just about as good of a fit as Dent and Agbim were. Just getting tired of all the panic and woe is us going around on this forum over this, when it's a Loooooong way from being over.

Agreed.
Nobody should be panicing, Pope is going to land some home runs, we just need to be patient.
If he gets Yaxel and/or Pierre, those hand wringers will pipe down.
IDK, I'm excited to see who will be on the squad next year now that Pope has a full portal to choose from.

is this 100% definite now? has he committed somewhere already? Has he declared he's staying in the draft? You read one post claiming we were third on his list and now are comfortable making such a definitive statement. Let it all play out. We are still mentioned with him, whether we are down the list or not. So let it all play out.

All media speculation is noise. Any story that uses words like "could" or "might" is nothing but rumor, and thus garbage.

Likewise any story whose source is "someone familiar with the matter."
